View Full Version : IF medical math is needed...

I need to get this off me....
I have noted.....as have other senior members, mentions of medication dosing, medication information that is not correct.
If you need help with medication, write ADMINISTRATION and ask who would be a safe member to help with medication....
any 4th grader can dose medication.... but knowing what each medication is ALL about is important....
drug interactions matter
1/100th of a mililiter matters
each sq deserves to have their medication mathematically equated, not 'tweaked' from previous shared info.
Please before you take on the task of helping a sq with medication.... know that you have to live with your advise.
Let's hope the sq can.

I did notice that it was recently said something about splitting a pill.
It has been advised NOT to do this, as some meds are not evenly distributed throughout the
pill.
Every time I dose, I send along the dosing chart, along with the link to the post showing
the dosing syringe. I tell the people to double check on the photo that is there,
and make sure they get the dose correct with what I suggested. I tell them if
there are ANY questions, to pm me.
I always send a copy of my instructions to Jackie, most of the time. If she isn't on
I send to another senior member with dosing abilities just to double check me. :thumbsup
I rarely if ever dose on open board, as some other people may take that info and dose
without the consequences and precautions spelled out.

I think it should also be noted that just because it may say "senior member" next to someone's name does not indicate level of ability, experience, or knowledge. It simply indicates that they have posted many times on TSB.

Very true, many senior members don't know how to dose.
I should have said, senior members with dosing abilities.
edit: I just edited my post to read as such.

OR, they thought they knew how, and they screwed up, and a squirrel died.
Now they know enough to leave dosing to those who are good at it, like Nancy and JIT.

There are several online classes for medical math offered to rehabbers, vet techs, etc. online that anyone can take. I had to learn dosing as part of the test from the IWRC to become a master rehabber. No matter how you learn to dose meds it is worth learning. If I can do it... ANYBODY can. :grin3 I still often check with anoher person just to be sure. however.

I did post about someone confirming the dosing I came up with a few days back. I would never dose without checking with someone first that has way more experience. Good thing I did because I learned something that night. I do have to say that in a panic with a cat caught baby with punture wounds on it's back I looked to see who was online so I could pm them and none of the " seasoned knowing members" were showing online. I wanted to dose the baby ASAP so that it had the best chance so I posted with the thought that maybe they were in invisible mode and would see my thread and pm me. I probably should have pm'd Jackie which was my first thought however I know she has quite a few emergent squirrels and was not sure if she would be on till the morning. My one concern is giving out dosing in a post. If someone is going to dose should it not be either through email, pm, or phone? I would think that TSB would not want someone to think they can give thier squirrel the same dose they saw in a thread because it is "close enough". Just my 2 cents :grin3

Many of our members already do that for the reasons mentioned. :thumbsup

You're absolutely right ques96; we always had an unwritten rule that dosages would be given in PM's or emails,. not on the open Board. I'm afraid that sometimes, in the heat of an emergency and frantic baby seasons, we forget this rule.
If I can do it... ANYBODY can.
I may actually have a mental block.....:shakehead
If I can find it through Wild Mammal Babies, I will help. I just don't do calculations.

I would like to ask though if someone is planning to send a dose in a PM or have already done so, PLEASE post as such on the thread otherwise those that know how to dose end up getting 50 bazillion PM's from everyone asking for help in dosing. If the person doing the dosing can just say "I am sending the dose in a PM" or "I just sent the dose in a PM" I think if would be extremely helpful for everyone. It will also prevent a lot of inboxes from exploding.

I have a little differing opinion on this idea, kinda of wishy washy , yes and no thing... Sometimes their are babies needing the same med at approximately the same weight , same circumstances, etc. that the finder might come on late at night and need dosing help and would benefit from correct or even close to correct dose info, particularly if a baby may not be able to hang on for 4-6 more hours. For example, Baytril, if you were off by 0.01 cc I don't think it would be that harmful. Baytril has a pretty wide weight range dose. (i.e., A baby weighing 70g to 108g would receive the same dose.) Likely, the finder would return at a time when others who can dose are available and could be more closley guided to the correct dose. This is my opinion only in cases as mentioned above. However, I DO see the point being made here. Some drugs could be dangerous when under or over dosed.
On the other hand, any incorrect info being passed freely in posts on to finders can be just as harmful or cause a more difficult recovery to the little ones we are trying to help.
