Hi, All:

Experienced rehabber handed over some Eastern Grey babies (3.5 weeks and 6 weeks) who were on Esbilac. The 3.5 week little ones did awesome transitioning over to FV and have great appetites, appropriate milk lines, and nice, firm poops. Poops in one are a little darker yellow, but both are appropriate for FV.

The 6-week-old guy is not doing well. He looks very different from the other two and all of my other releases - his fur is very red and also lots of black throughout. He's definitely an Eastern Grey, but I've never had one that looks like this. I did not see him poop as I was transitioning him to FV, and he was put into the bigger cage with my two 8-week-old babies. He seemed very small for his age and thin. He ate OK but not great. Last night's feeding he ate virtually nothing, and then this morning also perhaps 1/2 cc of FV. I have him on the 32/40 that is not 100% full-strength, and had planned on moving him up to 100% for a perhaps 2 weeks to get him stronger and more healthy and then transition him to the 20/50. His poops this morning were VERY runny and medium-yellow, not smelly at all.

This afternoon, he didn't want to eat and had diarrhea. It was yellow and didn't smell. I gave him a few drops of Imodium and some Pedialyte (no FV). About 6 hours later, I gave him a few more drops of Imodium, which he threw up a little bit of (light green and foamy). He also had very watery diarrhea, but this time it has some very small white clumps in it. Still no smell at all, just watery. Could this be the last of the formula (Esbilac & FV) going through him?

His urine is nice and clear and he is fairly active, climbing around in the larger cage. I have isolated him and he is sleeping, but he really doesn't want to eat much Pedialyte at all (probably because his tummy hurts). I am stopping Imodium due to him vomiting it up and will continue on the Pedialyte every few hours until I hit 24 hours as he is not taking much at all.

What do you suggest I do next? I've released at least a dozen squirrels thus far, but I have never had this problem with poops like this. I have also never had a baby that was on Esbilac, either.

Thank you!!!

I suggest trying yogurt to get his tummy back in order!!

If he is hydrated I would go ahead with the FV.
And if the diarrhea continues it could be coccidia
and SMZ-TMP is a very good and mild AB for this.

Thanks for the advice. Will start him back on FV and I have some plain Greek yogurt to help him balance out. If he's still runny, I will take him to our wildlife rehab lady who can help with the coccidia meds as I don't have them.

Thanks again!

Toby update:

Great news! At last night's late-night feeding, I fed the littles as normal and also fed him some Greek yogurt. He was really uninterested, but took a few licks off my finger. I also put a little in a bit of FV formula for him, but he barely took .25cc of it.

For the early-morning feeding, I fed the littles again and offered Toby some more Greek yogurt. He was definitely more interested and took a lot more off my finger - I had to go back for a second fingertip serving for him. His appetite was improved, and he took 3ccs of the FV (no yogurt). It was probably a little too much for him, and he vomited twice a little. I could see formula in the first puke, but the second was more of an "ugh" and foamy. Also, he pooped two very loose turds BUT they were a little bit more formed and a wonderful healthy darker yellow color, unlike the white water he was passing yesterday. His urine was a little yellow but not stinky and pretty clear. Just like yesterday, he is very pretty active and enjoys crawling and jumping around.

This afternoon, I fed him a little more Greek yogurt on my finger (he was pretty 'meh' about it; just a lick or two). Once he got to the syringe for the FV, he happily and heartily ate 4ccs. NO MORE VOMIT - YES! I got a little pee out of him, which was nice and clear. He also had a little poop, which was a slight bit mushy (not watery or mucousy) but quite formed and again a healthy darker yellow.

Looks like he's in the clear. I'll keep up with the Greek yogurt as it really seemed to do the trick. Thanks again for your advice as I've had runny poops in my kids before, but never like this. Poor little lamb!

Are you using greek yogurt with the FV? It should actually be full fat regular yogurt.

Actually, I am not mixing any yogurt in with the formula with the exception of the one time. I've never done that with my squirrels and am just giving it straight off of my finger for this particular squirrel.
