This baby came to me covered in fly eggs, more than I've ever seen before, and, luckily, only oriface the maggots were in is one of her eyes. I did not flush with Capstar, because I did not know if it was safe to use in the eye. I did give her capstar orally. I figured if I killed the maggots in her eye, there would be no way of getting them out. I flushed her eye with saline, only a few came out.
I was hoping the Capstar working internally would make the maggots leave the eye before they died in it.
Is there anything else I can do?

I wish I would have cleaned her on a darker blanket, but you can see a lot of the eggs that came off her, and that was only most of them. I'm still working on her tail.

So should I do anything further with the eye, it's less swollen than before, and I gave her AB's for the infection.

Oh that poor little bubba...:grouphug:Love_Icon:grouphug So glad she found her way to you and your capable hands...:bowdown
I think that the Capstar/AB combo should work, but others who are more experienced who may have more information.

Until you get better advice, clean the eye out regularly.

Get them one by one. Maybe get a bottle of "Natural Tears II" and regularly flush out the eye. You're basically just putting in tears with that. It's available in the eye drops section.

Ohhh Kastillo that looks horrible....saline rinses sound good to me and if it doesn't stress her too much it probably is soothing also:thumbsup :bowdown :Love_Icon

I use the sensitive saline solution with my contacts....they have generic brands at Wally World ...it comes out much cheaper that way:thumbsup

Maggy still is oozing maggot bodies. She gets a saline rinse when I feed her. I wish they'd come out faster. I've got the AB ointment I used for popeye, so I'm putting it on here.

how old is your antibiotic ointment?? Antibiotic drops should be tossed 3 months after opening (according to my pharmacist). You can probably extend a bit but thought I should point that out.

While I was at the vet with Precious today I asked her what to do for maggots in a baby squirrel's eye. She said rinse it out frequently with warm saline and use antibiotic drops (no drops with steroid in them though), so it sounds like you're doing the exact right things. :thumbsup

Starfish -- FDA requires a shelf life date. Most things do not actually expire for years (exception: ABs you have to mix). Most things can be used long, long after 'expiration'. My Veterinarian (and most people don't realize or know this so I'm not picking, just letting you and others know so that you can save some money here and there) used to keep expired drugs. He couldn't sell/charge for them, but he made house calls to his elderly patients that couldn't get their pets into the office and treated their animals with those drugs free of charge. Never any issues! Pharmacies and drug companies want you to have to buy drugs more often for the money, hence the premature expiration date!

I agree with you in the most part; don't worry, I didn't feel picked on. Sealed stuff.... most drugs. However, i mean eye drops. Forgetting the best before date. I'd been told you should toss them once they've been opened. When it comes to putting stuff in my eyes, I tend to follow that one.

Again, don't worry, I wasn't hurt in any way. You're way too kind Uni. It would take more than one direct statement for me to think you intended some sort of slight. :thumbsup

I just went through that or should say still going through it but with ears. Ears hold tons of maggots but now after 2 capstar doses and antibiotic for a week she is doing better. If giving ab remember to give her extra water for dehydration. And yes, I named my little girl Maggie......

Yay!!! We both have a maggie now Bobby!

I had a little boy with maggots in the ear just a week ago. Did the same thing, capstar internal, capstar flush, and AB's for a few days. I fostered him out to one of my trusted volunteers. I have two people near me that I trust to take babies, and they help me a lot.

If I had kept all the squirrels I've taken in in just the last month, I'd have 14. If they all survived, I'd have 19. With me and hubby both working full time, alternating schedules so someone is always home to feed, we can carry 7-10 at a time.
I really wish I could quit my job and do full time squirrel/orphan wildlife care. But as it stands, we spend about 500 a month average on baby care, so gotta work too.

Any way, Maggy is doing ok. Her little eye is still really swollen, and there is still stuff coming out of the corner. I think they actually got behind the eye. Up and around those areas that are impossible to reach and you just gotta wait for things to work them selves out.

Poor baby, I know she's uncomfortable, but she is eating well, and peeing good, no formula poop yet, but I'm sure it's coming.:grin2
