I have a number of squirrel babies with diarrhea. Some are quite stinky. I've tried doing a fecal analysis on them but I just can't get enough of a sample to come up with anything. I'm thinking of treating them (the older ones anyway - about 6 weeks) with Panacur even though I can't get a diagnosis. Anyone know how safe Panacur is or what the risks are in doing this? I've used homeopathics in the past with great success but can't seem to find it now.
Thanks!

geez, first thing that comes to mind with stinky wet poops is coccidia or giardia...
do you have any sulfa based meds?? Bactrim, septra, trimeth, SMZ-TMP, sulfamethoxazole trimethaprim {all the same, different names}..
ideally this is great treatment for coccidia... sadly parasites are always hard to diagnose under the scope... (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CDUQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ask.com%2Fquestion%2Fsulfamet h-trimethoprim&ei=XeMIUsurMbO72QWYooCIAg&usg=AFQjCNHduBIb8yYrKiCqpwd-gwEmc_8TTg&sig2=6j0ocCq8WlT1gcpCfYqDpg&bvm=bv.50500085,d.aWc&cad=rja)if you do think it's possible to be coccidia, keep them on the meds at least 14 days firm, this is a reoccuring nightmare if not!
for giardia... an anti microbial is recommended metronidazole/flagyl..or fenbendazole {what you have, panacur}
coccidia is very common in stressed sqs...most wild animals are born with it, stress of any king can bring it forward..
giardia is less common in babies... not sure if it can be passed thru mothers milk, maybe...??
:grouphug
bleach bleach bleach... keep everything super clean using a dilute 10% bl;each solution...
and change bedding often.. of course you probably are anyways, phew!:eek:grin
where are you in canada? do you have a vet? maybe ask for the meds mentioned above...
hope you get this under control... I have seen monkeys with dairrhea from coccidia continue to play and eat and then some that are super lethargic...
nasty bug....
do you have dosage for the panacur? weights on the babies?

Thanks Jackie. I have sulfatrim, panacur, droncit and strongid-T as well as dosing instructions. I don't know how safe it is to treat babies with these meds though, especially without a solid diagnosis. Panacur has always worked on my juvies in the past within days but that's with a hookworm diagnosis. When I've had babies with diarrhea in the past and have been able to get a large enough stool sample it's always been hookworm, so I'm wondering if I can just go ahead and treat them with the panacur, but I know it could be coccidia which is not treatable with a dewormer. So I guess I'm a little torn on what to treat them with/for without knowing what is causing it. I'm keeping them super clean and warm. Thanks!
I just found a place that carries the homeopathic medicine I've used with success before. Gonna try that for the next couple of days and see how it goes.
I'm also having a heck of a time hydrating these guys (photo). We've already lost 3. They came in as pinkies. We've tried fluid therapy, electrolytes in between feeds and instead of feeds, and they just won't stay hydrated. They are also some of the babies quarantined for diarrhea. Gonna get them on the homeopathy and add some acidiphillus to their formula but any other suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks a bunch!
Thanks again!

If you can get them to a vet or get a stool sample to a vet that can analyze it for parasites, I would strongly suggest it. Don't just rely on homeopathic medications. If this is a parasite like coccidia, they will drop like flies without the right treatment. They may require IV fluid treatment.
