This poor boy just got here. It looks like something grabbed him by the neck. He 's hurting--he's breathing with a little crackle. I hope he wasn't shaken. His poor neck is raw under the fur. He freaked and tried to dart away when I lifted him into the carrier. He's in there now swaddled in fleece . I offered him a syringe with sugar water but he was scared and wouldn't take it at all. I'll call the vet first thing tomorrow but what can I do to make him more comfortable tonight. I put Rescue Remedy on his ears and he's in a dark quiet place. He could use some prayers and healing vibes.

Oh poor guy! I'm glad he has you! Do you think you could get any infant Motrin in him? :grouphug

I have Metacam--I can try touching that to his mouth to see if any would go in. I don't want to handle him too much. He's terrified. I have some Vetericyn spray. I can get that on the wound without causing the little guy too much extra stress. I sure hope I can get him to see a vet early. He's not taking any water. I gave him a little piece of watermelon but doubt he'll eat it any more than he'd accept the water.

Is there anyway that you can flush the wound out?
Flush the area generously with lots of warm antiseptic solution.
If you don't feel comfortable doing that tonight,
put some triple antibiotic cream on it, and
if you have antibiotics, give him some of those.
Along with possible pain relievers, do you have anything there?

OK I just saw you posted about Metacam, that would be great if you could
get him to take that.
Poor little peanut.

The poor thing may have been attacked by another squirrel, might explain the trauma and the appearance of the wounds.
It definitely needs time to de-stress. I've dealt with other stressed animals and I've played soft, gentle classical music very quietly in the background.

Oh Lord, please let me help rather than hurt. I got the wound sprayed and was gathering him to give a little Metacam and he jumped right out of my hands and onto the floor. Poor little guy. He does have movement. It wasn't any trouble at all to pick him up and get the Metacam into him. I need to bother him once more to get water into him. He's not dehydrated and I want to keep it that way.

I know you know this CL, but remember to cover his eyes when giving him meds, or even water. Something about pulling the fleece over their heads and slipping the syringe up from below them into the side of the mouth makes even the wildest wildies calm down :thumbsup

Yes Maura's right, and sometimes we forget the basics when dealing with a crisis.
Cover his little head and eyes when you handle him, or give meds.
You are doing great, I know this is nerve wracking,
and you're worrying about stressing him.
Just do things determined and don't take no, and it will go lots easier.:Love_Icon

Sweeper, he's a young squirrel but fully grown. The finder said he lives in the tree in her yard and she thinks maybe a dog got him--said there are a couple of Beagles that wander around. I hope he can go home to his tree soon.

Thanks guys for the reminder. He was covered up when I lifted him to give the Metacam. I pulled the fleece up to make it less stressful to lift him and I think it scared him. I just popped the syringe into his mouth and squeezed. His head was covered but not because I was such a competent person that I remembered. It was covered to keep him from leaping out of my hands again.

The little guy was with us at 5:30 this morning. When I checked on him before taking him to the vet at 9:00 he was gone. He had a deep puncture wound and the back of his neck was chewed up. Looked like a dog had savaged him. I love dogs--it's the people who let them run loose I loathe. I hope the Metacam made his last hours less painful. I wish I could have done more than dig a grave in Squirrel Haven and send his sweet body back to the earth. Sweet sleep little Squirrel. May your next turn on the wheel of life be kinder.

I'm sorry to hear that. You gave him a cozy place to spend his last hours though. Hopefully you don't find a repeat of this.

:( Thank you for helping this little guy. You did all that you could reasonably have done (and far more than 99% of the population would have done). I love dogs too, but as you said a lot of their owners need obedience school. RIP little squirrel, you did not pass on alone.

I am soo sorry.. he probably had internal stuff going on.. Always remember cat puncture dogs crush.. if the dog got him he most likely had crushing injuries.. we can not predict what kind as we cant see inside with out a vet to help.. but just know he was comfortable thanks to you.. And one more thing I am a pm away if you need anything I deal with a lot of these cases on a daily basis.. Sooo please I am here..:thumbsup:Love_Icon
