Need to know if a Guinea Pig can take Cipro? My daughter-in-law's son has two GP and one of them just died --the other one is sick
with crusty eyes, runny nose and upper respiratory issues going on. If he cannot not take Cipro, I have Amoxicillin on hand as well.
Cipro is 500 mg / Amoxi is 500 mg. *Weight = 800 grams. --------> They have Veraflox for cats.
:thankyou

.................................................. ..........................
Commonly Prescribed Antibiotics The following antibiotics are commonly used to treat a variety of problems in guinea pigs. Most antibiotics are prescribed in oral form for the pet owner to administer at home, though several can be administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular routes. Be sure to read Antibiotic Advice (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotic_advice.html) -- What You Need To Know About Antibiotics.
http://www.guinealynx.info/dt.gif Bactrim (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#bactrim)(SMZ-TMP; trimethoprim sulfa; Tribrissen; sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim, Septra)
http://www.guinealynx.info/dt.gif Baytril (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#baytril) (Enrofloxacin)
http://www.guinealynx.info/dt.gif Chloramphenicol (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#chloramphenicol) (Chloramphenicol sodium succinate, Chloramphenicol palmitate)
http://www.guinealynx.info/dt.gif Doxycycline (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#doxycycline) (Vibramycin, Vibravet)
Bactrim -- (trimethoprim sulfa; SMZ-TMP; sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim; Tribrissen, Septra)
Oral Dosage: 30 mg/kg q12h (i.e. 30mg/kg is given every 12 hours, for a total of 60 mg/kg in 24 hours) http://www.guinealynx.info/dt.gif Calculate Dose in mg and cc (http://www.guinealynx.info/dose_calculator.html)
Bactrim is a commonly used human and veterinary antibiotic and generally comes in a standard suspension. Each 5.0 ml of this pediatric oral suspension (one of the drugs sometimes referred to as "the pink stuff") contains 200mg sulfamethoxazole and 40mg trimethoprim/5ml for a total of 240mg active ingredients/5ml or 48mg/cc. A dose of 0.625 cc would provide 30mg bactrim for a pig of one kilo (2.2 pounds).
It is considered by some to be the drug of choice for urinary tract infections (UTI's). Louise C. notes it is used for urinary tract, ear and lung infections and kills the following: P. carnii, E. coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas cepacia, Pasturella, Clostridia, Proteus, Salmonella, Shigella, Brucella
For more information on bactrim, see www.marvistavet.com (http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_trimethoprim_sulfa.html). http://www.guinealynx.info/images/goup.gif (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#top) and www.veterinarypartner.com (http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&C=31&A=617&S=2)
Baytril -- (Enrofloxacin)
Oral Dosage: 2.5-10.0 mg/kg q12h http://www.guinealynx.info/dt.gif Calculate Dose in mg (http://www.guinealynx.info/dose_calculator.html)
Baytril can be administered by oral, subcutaneous or intramuscular routes.
Baytril is considered one of the "big guns", frequently used to treat guinea pigs with bacterial infections. Read additional information on baytril's use/misuse and efficacy on this thread (http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2111). Louise C. notes it kills: E. coli, K. pneumoniae, P. mirabilis, S. aureus. Baytril can affect the appetite, more likely when given orally. Ideally baytril should only be used on adult pigs as it is believed to interfere with proper growth, particularly in long term treatment. Bactrim (Tribrissen) is a safe alternative for young pigs.
For more information on baytril, see www.marvistavet.com (http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_enrofloxacin.html) http://www.guinealynx.info/images/goup.gif (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#top)
Chloramphenicol -- (Chloramphenicol sodium succinate [Subcutaneous, Intramuscular], Chloramphenicol palmitate [oral])
Oral Dosage: 50 mg/kg q12h http://www.guinealynx.info/dt.gif Calculate Dose in mg (http://www.guinealynx.info/dose_calculator.html)
Louise C. notes it kills: H. influenzae, S. typhi, Rickettsia, Neisseria, Mycoplasma which cause lung infections. http://www.guinealynx.info/images/goup.gif (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#top)
Doxycycline -- doxycycline hyclate, doxycycline monohydrate (Vibramycin, Vibravet (http://www.pfizer.co.nz/pah/vetnet/productinfo/vibravet50tablets.html))
Oral Dosage: 5mg/kg q12h http://www.guinealynx.info/dt.gif Calculate Dose in mg (http://www.guinealynx.info/dose_calculator.html)
Doxycycline is an advanced analogue of the tetracycline family of antibiotics with broad-spectrum activity against gram+ve and gram-ve bacteria including penicillinase-producers and anaerobes as well as rickettsia, chlamydia and mycoplasma. Activity has been demonstrated against a wide range of bacterial organisms including Staphylococcus spp, Streptococcus spp, E. coli, Pasteurella spp, Haemophilus spp, Clostridia spp, Listeria spp, Bacteroides spp, Bordetella spp, Klebsiella spp and others.
The use of tetracyclines in newborn animals may lead to permanent yellow staining of teeth. Avoid using doxycycline in pregnant animals in the last 3 weeks of pregnancy and in newborn animals in the first month of life.
For more information on doxycycline (Vibramycin), see www.marvistavet.com (http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_vibramycin.html).
Pinta has noted, "The Doxy dose that has worked the best for us is 5mg/kg twice a day. This is the same as the rat dose. We have found the usual dose of 2.5mg/kg just doesn't totally knock out a URI." http://www.guinealynx.info/images/goup.gif (http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#top)

No I do not have any critical care....... it looks like they are dealing with upper respiratory problems with weight loss.
The GP that is still alive weighs 800 mg and they have Cipro pills @ 500 mg if you can dose that I will pass it along.

are we in agreeance to dose high side since this has been fatal already and is respitory?
if so... let's do the 10mg/kg..
smash entire tab, these are not scored so should not be broken.
add 10 cc water, makes dilution 50mg/ml
for 800 grams, dose would be 0.16ml once a day for 7-10 days
keep solution in refridgerator, throw out after 21 days, becomes unstable.
any way the pig can see a vet for diagnosis?
what are the symptoms...
hitting it hard with big dog enro/cipro.... keep up the hydration and warmth...
try to find some critical care too...
if you can syringe him , try ensure.
I would think yogurt is a must... two hours before or after admin of ABs...
keep us in the loop...
hang in there piggie:Love_Icon
please read this carolyn... call me if I can help with anything... good luck sweet lady and piggie

Allergic Effects Of Antibiotics on Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs are very sensitive to the effects of antibiotics and often their administration can lead to toxic effects. One of the possible complications that follow the administration of antibiotics is an upset in the balance of the beneficial bacteria that normally live in the guinea pig's intestines, which in some cases can lead to more severe disease conditions than the original condition that was being treated. Prior underlying conditions, such as inadequate nutrition and vitamin C deficiency, can also make your guinea pig more likely to develop problems associated with antibiotics.
In general, you should avoid giving your guinea pig any antibiotics unless you have been specifically directed to do so by a veterinarian that is familiar with your guinea pig and its health history. If your guinea pig must take antibiotics, you will need to monitor its health carefully to avoid any complications from arising. Antibiotics are generally administered orally to guinea pigs rather than in an injection form.
Symptoms
Depending on the type of antibiotic, typicaly adverse reactions seen in guinea pigs include diarrhea, loss of appetite, dehydration, and/or a dangerous drop in body temperature. If the antibiotic treatment continues, the reaction may worsen and result in the guinea pig's death in less than a week. It is also important to note that even guinea pigs that do not show symptoms of antibiotic toxicity may die suddenly.
Causes
Many antibiotics, including penicillin, ampicillin, lincomycin, clindamycin, vancomycin, erythromycin, tylosin, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline can upset the balance of the beneficial bacteria that usually live in the guinea pig's intestines, creating an environment in which an opportunistic “bad” bacteria can take hold in the intestines. Two of the most common antibiotics that adversely affect guinea pigs are streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin. Topical antibiotic ointments (i.e., those used on the skin) can also be toxic if the guinea pig licks and ingests the ointment.
