10 mo old grey. HHB 2 a day. Nuts dusted with calcium carbonate. Veggies, fruit, excellent diet. Three days ago started to have seizures. First one 5+ minutes. Then they got progressively longer. Def not MBD blood calcium 13.3 complete blood work up. Glucose was at 191. This squirrel has been with me since furred baby. Tried release he wouldn't go. No known injuries. No known toxins. Liver and pancreas elevated, white blood count normal. Vet advised glucose not high enough to worry about diabetic seizure. All values were compared to rat. The FL study on labs are consistant with theirs. I am at a loss. Physical exam under anesthesia showed no cuts or abrasions. No ray as everything is responding and functioning as it should. I feel like everything is consistant with diabetic episode because of pancreas issue. Gets same diet as two NR we have that are several years old. Same type cages etc.

I'm obviously not a squirrel but I am a diabetic. (have been all my life, I am 50) From everything you've stated, I tend to think your squirrel may be diabetic. If it were me, I would look for another vet that specializes in endoctronology for animals. Normally, 70 to 120 is considered in the normal BS range, however, if MINE were to drop in that range, I would drop to the floor. Everyone is different including animals.

In the meantime, I would pull back on feeding fruit or much of anything sweet for a few days to see if your baby seems better and the seizures stop. I am not familiar with your squirrel but am wondering if there is a reason you add or were told to add calcium to the nuts? I am asking because I have a sugar glider that will have seizures if she gets under stress of any kind such as bright lighting or is scared and needs a calcium boost to bring up her blood sugar. (yes, I said that right) :)

Good luck with your baby and I pray all gets well FAST! :)

I would have suggested some molasses on the gums to make sure the blood level was up and then a dose of calcium via a crush tums --but you are saying that you do not feel this is due to low calcium, Hmmmm......... trying to think. :thinking:thinking:thinking

Ok Pickles is hanging in there still. Here is alittle more background. He is 300g and was healthy as could be. He started to ignore his HHB about two weeks ago. I was giving him fresh Cherries as part of his diet, two sometimes up to four a day and after moving him to a heated aquarium, last night when returning from the vet, I checked and there were not many pits under his pen. The others spit them out within a few moments, basically pitting the cherry as we would do.
He shows about 80% of the symptoms of cyanide glycoside poisoning, less the vomiting. I did get valium, baytril, and some metacam in him this morning and he didn't seize when I touched him, which he did yesterday. I also got a half pill of milk thistle and aprox 5-6cc of 100% apple juice in him. He got a SQ of 15cc LR yesterday about 4pm. He is very lethargic which I would expect from valium but he does fuss and chatter when he is disturbed, so this is good. His eyes are clear (healthy), no tears, he has bitten through his lips when seizing and his cornea's are ulcerated due to abrasion so he is getting drops. This little guy will not be handled peacefully so this is a big adventure. Many thanks to those of you that have responded.
I am trying to locate some Hydroxocobalimin to inject him with, no luck yet. Worse case scenario he will have lots of B12 in his system, best case it will start to convert cyanide to cyanocobalimine and he will heal if it is poisoning as I suspect. I will keep everyone up to date.

So this little actually IS suffering from cyanide poisoning from ingested cherry pits? I pit and peel pretty much everything but always wondered if this was actually possible or just theoretically possible, and it sounds as though poor Pickles has proved it out. I wonder how frequently this happens in the wild? I do hope you have caught it in time...

This should be a sticky. Sounds like the OP dx this quickly and is doing everything possible to treat the squirrel. Keeping fingers crossed for your squirrel!

Cliffnotes: cyanide poisoning after two weeks exposure to 2-4 cherry pits per day.

I have two NR that have had whole cherries since for years, both maloclusions and will spit the seed out in a matter of moments. All indications are pickles was chewing on his pits which is why I think this is possible. the cummulative effect of the toxin would account for the slow onset. The vet is stumped as well due to white blood count being normal and calcium being at the top and glucose being within tolerance just spiked a little.

He appears to have been poisoned, yet the only thing he has had different or access to is the cherries. I grew up and live in the woods and recall 30 years ago seeing many rats poisoned in our barn in the feed room exibit these same symptoms. I am praying he is still hanging in there when I get home this evening. Also hope no irreversible damage has been done. The poisoning theory is strictly my own. Molasses in his mouth has had no effect. I do know cherry pits are toxic in large quantities as are lots of seeds. Hopefully someone on here will have seen this in another and can substantiate my theory. Any de-tox info would be appreciated also. To late for charcoal I am sure. He did urinate during the night so that is a positive sign. Thanks for the prayers, there is nothing God can't accomplish!!!!!!

This has been a question I have pondered a lot about since there is so much they do eat in the wild that we can't safely feed them in captivity. Since the wilds know what and how to eat to balance their own nutritional levels, I also have to think they know what to eat to counter effects from adverse verities they come across in the wild.

Update...Pickles is hanging on. Seemed a little more mobile this eve. Last night and this morning he was almost paralyzed and stiff like rigors. Still not moving around but did turn around in his hut. Chatters and fusses at me the whole time I am working with him. At 8pm est I dosed Valium, metacam, baytril. Drank close to 8cc pedialyte with milk thistle from syringe. Took two CC apple sauce. The prayers are working. Not sure how many people are reading this because it is just another seizure caused by MBD most will assume. I wish I knew for sure it was the cherries so nobody else has to go through this. His suffering is ripping my heart out. Keep the good vibes coming!!!!:thankyou

Yes, Apple Seeds and Cherry Pits are Poisonous
By Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D., About.com
In fact, if you eat enough apple seeds or cherry pits, you could die. Apple seeds contain cyanogenic acids. Cherry pits, and seeds from related fruits, including peaches, plums, almonds, pears, and apricots, contain cyanogenic glycosides. Your body can detoxify small quantities of cyanide compounds. If you accidentally eat a cherry pit in a pie or swallow an apple seed or two, you'll be fine. Actually, if you swallow several seeds whole, you would absorb a minimal amount of the toxic compounds. Chewing the seeds makes them much more hazardous to your health. Children and pets are much more likely to suffer poisoning from eating the seeds than adults.
Symptoms of mild poisoning include headache, dizziness, confusion, anxiety, and vomiting. Larger doses can lead to difficulty breathing, increased blood pressure and heart rate, and kidney failure. Reactions can include coma, convulsions, and death from respiratory arrest. There are several treatment options, but the main thing is to limit the absorption of the chemicals from the seeds. Basically, this means it's important to seek immediate medical attention if a child or pet is known to have eaten several seeds. Usually, the plan of action is to pump the stomach or induce vomiting. Antidotes are available, but they are somewhat controversial. If you or someone you know eats a seed or two, don't worry... as I said, your body is well-equipped to detoxify small quantities of cyanide compounds. They naturally occur in several foods. However, if you were wondering whether or not it's true that the seeds and pits are toxic and potentially lethal... yes, apple seeds and cherry pits are poisonous.

Morning update: Pickles appeared a little more vibrant this morning. He took 2cc of yogurt and 2-3cc of apple juice with milk thistle, a little calcium, and one drop of multivitamin along with his meds. The best sign was his face was clean which meant he was alert enough now to groom himself. He had a bm and urinated during the night, strange how such things excite us :grin He is still not moving around much but is more aware of his enviroment. I haven't seen a seizure in aprox. 24 hrs now. Anne and I spoke at length several times about Pickles and we both think it is toxins, I see she posted about the pits last night, thank you miss Anne!!! I would like to let all of you on here know what a wonderful person Anne Miller is and how caring she is, our heart and thanks go out to her!!! :thankyou

Am I reading this correctly? Almonds??? I've been putting lots of almonds in my homemade HHB's and boo-balls. Does this mean my fuzzers might end up with an accumulation of the toxins for having those every day?

I know I may be an overprotective mom but I'm worried now that for wanting to do good by using almonds for the extra calcium I may have cause them harm. :(

All things listed have miniscular amounts. My belief is pickles was eating the pits. Like candy, to much and you get sick. Just got home, he is still with me. He drank aprox 6cc Boost, 2cc apple sauce with a touch of calcium. Allowed a baby wipe bath so long as his eyes were covered. Waiting to see if vet will give me a prescription for HydroXocobalamin. So far no luck. The only movement is darty jerks when he fusses and I am putting him back in his hut. All extremeties have great feeling even the very tip of his tail. Thank you Admin for adding to title. Will try and update this eve.

This type of injury will cause systemic damage (brain, heart , liver etc). I hope damage to the cortex and cerrebellum is minimal. Squirrels do seem to have almost superhuman powers of healing and recovery, someone should look into this.

I was impressed with how much he took, 7-8oz applesauce with a touch of calcium, 7-8oz pedialyte and boost mixed, meds and milk thistle. He still only wants to lay on his side but he will crawl into his hut when I put him back. Thank you unikorngirl and all of you for the prayers. I will continue to update as everyone likes.

I am trimming the pedialyte back considerably, hence the boost mix. I know he needed electrolytes and thats what we had on hand. He drank boost and apple juice mix plus an apple sauce and vitamin slurry this morning at 5am before work with his meds. He was wiggly and fussy and actually was up on all four and went back in his hut after feeding. I have the wife watching him for movement, he is in a 40gl aquarium with a heated area and lots of fleece. I got a call from her at 9:15 to say he came out and walked around the aquarium!!!! He was wobbly but I will take it! This is his first walking since the siezures got severe and I took him to the vet. Things are looking up, we have our fingers crossed :wahoo I was wondering if anyone is using or has used actual coconut water as an electrolyte boost???? :Drink Shows very low sodium and light potassium.

Ok, here is his latest news..... penis was out of the sheath, distended and swollen last night, applied sugar poltice and it seemed a little better this morn. Applied triple AB ointment before leaving him this morn. He ate good last night and wobbled around the aquarium twice. This morning he seemed less eager to eat. I did put some dried raisins and cranberries in a croc for him and they had been moved around so I am hoping he ate some. I forgot to count them last night which I would normaly do with babies. Mixed FV and Boost this morning, he took about 6cc of that and about 4cc of apple juice. this afternoon he is getting a bath and I am going to exercise all his legs and joints. He did spread his front legs as I rubbed his chest down with a baby wipe this morning and enjoyed it. I used to scratch him there and he would lean from one side to the other so it's a good sign. I will post again this eve and try and get some pics posted.

Just an FYI Magna. Warrior's little peenie would do that when he was dehyrated. I would do the same kind of. He took about 12cc danon yogurt drink for his eve meal. Ate pear, kiwi, spinach baby food and apple juice for lunch. Good bm and urine. He is so frail. He cannot use his back legs coordinated so I supported him some and helped him walk around. He pawed at the croc full of water and flipped the stones around. I held some food to see if he would eat. He tried to bite some food but was uncoordinated and couldn't figure it out.

The cerebellum is especially susceptible to damage from hypoxia. The limb weakness, tremors, loss of coordination are all symptoms from this type of injury. I think he would do better on Prednisone possibly but know that the Melox and Pred are contraindicative so not sure how long it would take to clear his system, one week is advisable for a larger animal. that is exactly why I asked... you're reading my mind.
I def would switch...I say that from experience..I have seen such great improvements with the steroid long term therapy in cases where limb reactions are slow to improve.
My current vet as well as many others have always said to wait 24-30 hours between the NSAID and the steroid... I push hydration during this void in treatments.
I do think it will make a difference...
I have found after 5 days on metacam, you have seen the majority of reduction that you will see.... yet with the pred, I continue to see drastic improvements...
Prednisone is not as diffecult as dex in the taper down either... I can always share what I have done in the past..

Latest update....more drastic improvement!! He is eating on his own now since yesterday. Got home last night and he had eatin a whole HHB, a grape, 4 baby rice puffs, most of a tums, and a PITTED cherry!!! He still struggles to hold things even the weight of a grape is to much, so I support his food and he thinks " I got this!!!" Bit me twice yesterday drawing the red life fluid from my hand, which is good because five days ago he was to weak to break the skin. This morning he sounded like an angry chainsaw when I walked by and he saw me. He will let me handle him once he knows it's me and the fear of being attacked has passed. So we are soft and quiet around him. His bites could have been MUCH worse, I think he just wanted me to know he still cares about our relationship....:rotfl So here are a couple pics from last night and the difference is amazing than just a week ago.210897210898210899

Pickles is about 90% back to normal....CRANKY if you reach in, but fine once I'm holding him. He still wobbles when he sits but he doesn't fall over....most of the time. Some of our other temporary guests were peering in at him this evening and he was telling them what he thought!!! He is eating the HHB again and chewing his hut to shreds. I assume his teeth must be bothering him but I don't want to mess with them. He had perfect teeth prior to being sick but he hasn't been able to grind them on anything do to being so weak. They still look great just a tad long. Anyway, all else is good. Now Pickle's has a thing or two he would like to say :thumbsup

"WHILE I APPRECIATE ALL THE PRAYERS, WHICH MOST LIKELY SAVED ME, AND THE LOVE, COULD SOMEBODY PLEASE TALK TO THIS HIDEOUS THING THAT KEEPS PRODDING AND POKING ME AND HAS THE DRAGON BREATH FROM %^$#.....IN SPITE OF ALL MY EFFORTS TO MAIM AND WOUND THIS THING IT KEEPS COMING BACK AND WAKING ME UP AND SQUIRTING THESE NASTY TASTING THINGS IN MY MOUTH. I WIPE MY FACE ALL OVER IT'S SKIN AND IT STILL DOESN'T GET THE IDEA I DON'T LIKE IT, I DON'T THINK IT'S VERY INTELLIGENT. I DIG MY TALONS INTO IT'S SOFT MOOSHY HIDE AND GROWL TO NO AVAIL, IT MAKES SOFT SISSY NOISES AND THEN FORCES ME AGAINST IT'S BODY WHILE RUBBING ME ALL OVER, AT THIS POINT I JUST PLAY DEAD AND HOPE FOR THE BEST. I AM TRAPPED IN A WORLD OF INVISIBLE WALLS AND I CAN'T GET OUT. PLEASE SEND HELP ASAP!
P.S. I could really use some nuts about now, oh and a slurpy!!!!! COLA NOT CHERRY!!!!

So now everyone knows what I am up against!!! :grin3

HIDEOUS CREATURE HAS MADE ITSELF ELUSIVE TODAY. NOT HARD TO KEEP TRACK OF AS IT SEEMS TO MOVE AT THE SPEED OF A SLOTH. I NOW AWAKE EACH MORNING TO FIND STRANGE SQUARE CUBES WITH A NUTTY FLAVOR IN MY PRISON. THE HOLLOW STICKS FULL OF THAT VILE SUBSTANCE WHICH IT FORCES ME TO TAKE ARE BECOMING LESS FREQUENT. I FIND MY STRENGTH RETURNING, AS I DEMONSTRATED TODAY WHEN THE CREATURE INTRODUCED A FOREIGN OBJECT INTO MY CELL, WHICH BEGAN COLLECTING ALL MY TREASURES AND FOOD ..... I POUNCED AT ONCE!!!!!.....IN SPITE OF MY SNARLS AND BITES IT KEPT GATHERING ALL MY WELL HIDDEN KEEP SAKES. THEN IT HAPPENED, THE CREATURE STRUCK LIKE A COBRA AND I GOT THE DREADED STICK FULL OF GOO IN MY MOUTH...YUK . I PRETENDED TO BE PLAYFUL AFTERWARDS HOPING TO LURE IT BACK FOR A CHANCE TO BREAK FREE, BUT I HAD THE STRANGEST URGE TO BITE THE LIVING ^&^%$# OUT OF IT, AND DID!!!!:rotfl. THE THING MADE TERRIBLE HOWLING SOUNDS, RECOILED AND THEN SEIZED ME, PUTTING ME IN A TRANCE WITH THE DREADED BELLY RUB. I FEAR IF THERE IS NO HELP SOON I AM DOOMED TO A FEMININE LIFE OF BELLY RUBS AND BABY WIPES. THE MATE TO THE CREATURE HAS SHOWN AN UNCANNY INTEREST IN ME RECENTLY. IT'S SOUNDS ARE SOOTHING. HEAR IT COMES NOW, WHEN IT MAKES NOISES I FIND MYSELF UNABLE TO MAINTAIN A TRAIN OF THoug........... :sleep

THINGS NOWHERE IN SIGHT, WAS ABLE TO MAKE WAY TO KEYBOARD. S.O.S...... STILL CONTAINED BY INVISIBLE WALLS AND MESH SKY...FOOD REEEEAAAAALLLLY GOOD NOW, :Drink FUR SUIT GETTING VERY VERY SNUG AROUND MIDDLE. LITTLE TO DO BUT EAT AND SLEEP AND WATCH OUTDOORS. TRYING NEW, MORE DOCILE APPROACH TO CREATURES HOPING FOR MOMENTARY CHANCE TO BREAK OUT. ALLOWING BRIEF ARMAGE AND SNUGGLES, RESISTANCE IS VERY HARD!!!! URGE TO BITE STILL BAD... TRICKED THE DOMINANT ONE INTO LETTING ME CLIMB UP ITS HIDE LATE YESTERDAY FOR BETTER VIEW OF SITUATION. NOT GOOD, MASSIVE STRUCTURE AROUND PRISON. NO WORKOUT EQUIPMENT IN SIGHT. WATCHED PROJECT RUNWAY AND GAME OF THRONES ......WALLS NEED CLEANING!!!! ALL TREASURES TAKEN VERY LATE LAST NIGHT, DURING SHAKEDOWN BY LARGE CREATURE, ATTACKED AND TRIED TO RUN IT OFF TO NO AVAIL. :madd WAS SEIZED AND PUT IN DREADED BELLY RUB HOLD, CANNOT DEFEND AGAINST THIS. I FEAR THE WORST.........

Update on Pickles. He is looking good however, he feels like a plastic squirrel when I pick him up. He is very firm all over, otherwise he appears normal. He almost appears muscle bound. Diet is good, eating good, hoping he is just getting reeeeeally fat!!! He moves like a robot though, very deliberate and exagerated at times, other times very fluid like he should be. I think he may have some lasting neurological issues. He just moved back into a wire cage, not very tall yet so we can see how he does. Thanks for all the interest from everyone he really is a cool little guy, I thought we were going to lose him at first but his story says it all!!! Prayers do work!!!!!

FREEEEEEEDOM!!!!!! TRANSFERED FROM MAXIMUM SECURITY TO GENERAL POPULATION....THEN WITHIN DAYS MOVED TO WORK CAMP. LARGE FACILITY WITH LOTS OF ROOM, EXCELLENT VIEWS...NO AIRCONDITIONING???? FOUND OUT NAME OF CREATURE, ACCORDING TO FOX NEWS ONLY SHERRIF JOE ARPAIO HAS THESE DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS FOR PRISONERS. FOUND DEAD MONKEY HANGING BY NECK, APPARENTLY HUNG HIMSELF FROM DESPAIR IN MY NEW QUARTERS. HE IS VERY SOFT AND FEELS REEEEALLLY GOOD WHEN I WRESTLE WITH HIM, A WALKING DEAD TYPE FRIEND I SUPPOSE ..... KINDA CREEPY!!! POKED A HOLE IN HIM TO VERIFY HE WAS IN FACT DEAD AND HE IS, NOTHING BUT WHITE FLUFFY STUFF INSIDE!!!! TAXIDERMIST DID GOOD JOB. FOOD, JUST OK, IN NEW FACILITY, GETTING STRENGTH BACK. SNUCK IN THROUGH SIDE WINDOW TO ACCESS COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT. SAW NUMEROUS SMALL CLONES OF MYSELF INSIDE OTHER WINDOW ONLY HALF DEVELOPED, TENDED BY CREATURE AND WHAT CAN ONLY BE IT'S MATE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A SCIENTIFIC FACILITY CONDUCTING TWISTED EXPERIMENTS ON :eek

Don't worry, if there are a lot of half developed creatures for that giant pinkie and its mate to tend, you will be able to get back to the tech room. Those half-baked creatures seem to require a whole lot of time and a lot of high-pitched baby talk that I find quite annoying!
Keep the faith!
