PLEASE HELP ME to determine IF this baby rabbit is in distress.

We have rabbits in the yard and they made a NEW nest near us, when we went out this morning, this baby rabbit was away from the nest on their side in the lawn.

Not sure if they were alive, I picked them up and they swiggled, so I put them near the entrance of what I think the nest is.

I went back to check and here are the pictures.

Mom was there 1st thing this morning, but obviously not when we are there.

There are NO predators that will get the rabbits in this location, except by air, meaning birds of prey.

So.

1) Is this baby rabbit in distress and needing intervention?

2) What are my next steps?

thinking if you know there were more and yet this one is alone... maybe time to intervene...
however, I have very little cottontail experience, only two and they were well behaved for me...
maybe getting ahold of Lynne, Squirrels rule and bunnies too...
just don't know.:grouphug:thankyou

Can you watch the mother interact with the babies from a distance? Babies do sometimes get that itch to explore, or they just get uncomfortable with temperatures.

MAYBE all is OK. As I mentioned I PUT the baby rabbit near the opening of what I think is their nest.

Was ANYONE able to see the video? That is what had worried me, the little feetsie moving and being active. MOM IS AROUND FOR SURE. She was there this morning.

This is the 2nd litter being born in this area of the yard. This is the 1st time we have seen any baby from this litter.

Hi Jackie— thanks for always being there. Unknown how many are in THIS litter. Mom was around this morning before we noticed the baby.

cnmnnaturalist— hi ya. Mom is around for sure, she was here this morning. Okay, MAYBE baby just wandered off a little too far from the nest. Thanks.

The newest pictures. I noticed the string was moved, no sign of baby and the nesting material SEEMS to be over the hole a bit. I didn’t look inside. So MAYBE Mom came back and put the baby in the nest??

If I need to be doing something or looking further, PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH.

In my opinion, that baby is very close to the age that they start to wander. Mom purposely leaves the nest during the day as to not attract attention to the babies. She may have came and moved it, or it may have wandered again. They certainly have a way of finding each other when its time to eat :) I would just observe from a distance, and dont mow the grass for a while :thumbsup

Hey sid'smommy— thanks for the replies. Thanks to TSB, I actually did know about the Mom leaving and then coming back, hehe. :) Mom and the other rabbits are pretty used to me and generally aren’t too scared of me.

I was out there again and poor Mom decided to leave. So, I checked the nest, and Mom DID removed the string now and opened the nest. No baby for me to find this time, I looked and looked.

About the video. Please KNOW, I HAD just PICKED UP the baby rabbit from the lawn area and tried to figure out WHERE to put him, so MAYBE, I disrupted how he wanted to be and he was swiggling??? IDK What are your thoughts about this IF I get to see the baby rabbit again?

Nothing I can do now, because I’m not sure where the baby rabbit is at the moment. I can’t say about injuries, I HONESTLY did NOT look that closely for injuries. The body seemed how it appears in the pictures.

Does ANYONE think this warrants further monitoring??? If so WHAT should I be looking for and/or do???

If the baby was struggling like that when you first found it, I would say its in big trouble... but, if it was sitting upright and still, or hopping around, then its probably fine.
