View Full Version : Luckiest mouse alive?

So I got my BBQ propane tanks refilled today and one of the tanks was overfilled. When I attempted to use the BBQ, it worked fine for a couple minutes but then I noticed the temp guage falling. Apparently, the overfilled tank caused the regulator to freeze up temporarily shutting down the BBQ. As I was messing around trying to figure what happened, I noticed an unusual amount of smoke coming from the grill. Peering under the grates, I noticed a small nest on fire! At that movement, a little mouse jumped/fell out of the BBQ and onto my deck!

I brought him inside and placed him into a Tupperware with some holes punched in the top. He is currently sitting in a dark, quiet closet. I called a local rehabber but have not heard back yet. Will a rehabber takin in a mouse?

Lessons learned, nests are found in gas grills all the time. :grin
It's a perfect nesting place since they sit unused for so long.
I hope you checked for other's...
Find a safe place covered in thick brush and let the little tyke go,
he can make it on his own now.

Well, he took a two foot drop to the concrete deck. He does not look burned at all but the temp in the BBQ went up to 700 degrees briefly before the regulator froze and shut things down. I looked very carefully for others but he was alone. I am think of keeping him, especially if a rehabber will not take him in. He is cute.

You think he is old enough to make it on his own? His eyes don't really look all that open but he is covered in fur. He is very tiny!

Hey, if you want a mouse for a pet, go for it I say...
I'm sure he (or she) will have the good life! :thumbsup

I do and you can bet he was not the only one that lived there, just the one that has been last to leave.
But ya gotta admit, it's cute... and he won't eat you out of house and home. :grin

Imagine just how "tiny" he was when born...

I am tempted to keep him, but he should probably be wild and free to do whatever it is that mice do. I'll release him in a overgrown area near the back of my yard.

I was hoping for a life of leisure. Are you going to keep him for a day to make sure there's nothing wrong?

:wave123 TubeDriver, This rehabber will take mice in. I have had several mice as pets. Judy (in Columbia) will usually take mice in too if not really busy. I know she is busy with intake right now. I just talked to her. If you want me to take the mouse I will take it tomorrow (for release) after observation for a day or so. Remember if you keep him/her it will need a good diet that includes rodent block. Mice are also susceptible to MBD. Let me know if you need help.

Don't act like you did not agree NOT use the grill, Step:rotfl The rule is... if the mice are too little to relocate we just do not use the grill. Plan B.... Borrow a portable grill. I think I was in the company of some other crazy people as well. :crazyI am hoping to have the grill "mice free" some time this summer. Hope you can make it for that event.:thumbsup

I talked with Judy but she is swamped with pinkies and about a dozen birds.

I think this guy's eyes are not yet opened, although you can't tell from the picture I posted. I have not seen him open his eyes. He is moving around a bit in the box and seems healthy. I would like to get him to you if you can take care of him till he is ready to be released. I could also get a cage and take care of him for a while till he is old enough to be released but I will not be able to take care of him around the clock (work schedule would interfere) if that is what he needs? He is really cute, I feel I owe him a shot at a decent life since I burned up his nest.

Is he eating or drinking? DO you have any formula that you could offer him and a paint brush with which to serve it?

Update:

The mouse made it fine through the night. I got a call from Judy that two of the injured pinkies she just got did not make it through the night so she will have time/space to takin in my mouse. I will be dropping him off this afternoon. We will miss him, he is super cute but Judy will be able to raise him and get him ready for release.

He looks old enough to have his eyes open but you can not always tell in a picture about mice. At times I get mice in that we think the eyes are not open yet but after an exam I realize they have an eye infection. Just can't tell until an exam. Did the mouse get smoke from the smoldering nest in his eyes? That could have irritated them so he would not want to open his eyes. Judy will take wonderful care. I have pinkies, pinkies, pinkies too. Tis the pinkie season... :sanp3

Good point! He might have had smoke in his eyes. I took him to Judy and she will care for him until he can be released. He only weighed 3.7g when we dropped him off. He sure is a cute little fellow.

On a positive note, the baby Robbin that I rescued a while back is now a strong, healthy looking young bird ready for release!

Just a check-in on the little mousie.

He is with a rehabber and is doing fine. He weighs 3.7g. It will probably take a couple weeks but he will be released when he is about 7-8g.

He was really cute. My wife kept saying "I don't really like mice but he was so cute." I think she wanted to keep him as a pet.

I know how she feels. I had an eyes closed mouse brought to me a few years ago. I kept him as a pet. He lived for 3.4 years. He went on our beach vacation to the Outer Banks 4 years in a row. The last time he went with us to the beach he was an old, old mouse. He died in my hands while we were there. That was his favorite place to be ... in my hands. For such a tiny creature, if he did not want to get out of my hands he would hunker down in my hands and try to weigh 1000 pounds.
If this little one only weighed 3.7 g he was most likely eyes closed. That is really small. He is a cutie.:Love_Icon
So glad the robin will be released soon. Great rescues!!!:thumbsup
