I have a five-week old Grey Squirrel that just opened her eyes. Her right eye is a dull, pale blue in color, while her left eye is a normal black in color. In five years of rehabbing squirrels (and every other kind of mammal), I've not seen this condition before. I'd like to hear only from someone with precise information about this. Thanks....

Sounds like she could be blind in that eye. Could it be nutritional? Sometimes the color changes back with proper nutrition. Sometimes it's just damage or congenital though. We had one on here a little bit ago whose eye was like that on opening, but it was preceded by an eye infection while closed.

Is veterinary care an option for you?
A vet exam would confirm the reason whether it was caused by trauma, infection or birth defect
and the treatment and outcome would vary depending on the cause.
I do have a forever squirrel Sylvia that appeared normal at intake 2 weeks old (no signs of trauma)
but opened eyes to display one bluish-white eye.
She was not in my care at that point, I got her when she was 8 weeks old.
It had been assumed by the previous rehabber that it was a birth defect.
My vet examined her eye and determined it was damage caused by head trauma, likely in falling out of the nest.
The eye is damaged beyond repair, no hope for regaining vision.
Antibiotic drops cleared up the cloudiness. Only I can tell which is her blind eye now.
She also has other issues caused by the head trauma aside from the the blindness so she is not releasable.

Hammie was blind in one eye however oftentimes blue or pale haze over the eye may indicate a vitamin deficiency that will correct on its own over time with proper vitamin intake. Also this could be a sign of inner ear infection. Do you have a veterinarian willing to take a look?
