View Full Version : Broken leg!!!

I am desperately seeking help for my squirrel. He was injured at birth (probably the fall from his tree) so I've had him for seven years. About two months ago he seemed well, so I let him go in my backyard. My family hand feeds him, he runs around us hopping like a ferret...

As of two weeks ago he crawled back to us with his leg dragging, toes closed with no movement. Couldn't climb up a log to sit with me. I put him in a 6x4ft multifloor rabbit hut outside... But he doesn't wake up often, and is leg has shown no improvement. Today he wouldn't even move his head when I tried to pet/feed him. I have no idea what happened out there, but I can't let him go again like this...He has no problem living in the cage right now. Yet I don't want him to be caged since he loved outside.

It all seems very grim. Please, any advice on rehabilitation? Maybe something for pain? (Heard you can give dogs Asprin) Anything at all would be wonderful.

Thank you for anything that you could suggest to me.

First things first. Can you tell us what he ate when he was with you. Be very specific please.

He sounds like he is in pain and if he lived in the house for 7 years, you should consider bringing him back in. He probably was injusred because he was a little too old to learn new squirrel tricks. THey are very territorial and he may have been injured in a fight. If you can get him into a smaller container and put a heating pad set on low under half of the container it will maybe give him a bit of relief. Can you post a picture or email one to me to post? vfwpost7666@sbcglobal.net is my email. INFANT Motrin can be used, but we will need an idea of how much he weighs to dose it.

Do you have any fox valley formula? He might drink that out of a syringe if he is needing some vitamins in his diet to make him strong again.

Also feeding a good quality Rodent Block like the ones at www.henryspets.com would be good.

He may need the extra vitamins and minerals in those products so he can eat the right foods so he can heal.

Later if he wants back out of the cage, you can release him again, but right now I think he is best in his cage or back inside, whatever he was used to before he got hurt.

when he is better, then think about what is best for him regarding releasing.

keep us posted.

That little guy should see a vet. I know sometimes squirrel vets are scarcer than dinosaur teeth but if the leg is broken and he's in pain--needs a doc.

I think we need to know diet. We have no clue what we're dealing with yet. Diet might tell all!! Just my humble opinion :thumbsup
