I have recently came accross a bunch of carob trees (locust bean) at my place of work and they are loaded with the dried pods resembling the tamarind pods of south america. On the ground you can plainly see the evidence of squirrell activity eating the green and mature pods seeds and the Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceratonia_siliqua indicates humans have been using and eating them along with their domesticated animals for millenia.
My obvious question is one of prudence: does anyone knwos if these pods or tree bark are dangerous to sciurus carolinensys a.k.a. tree squirrels?
Thanks,
Trooper's dad :thankyou

I don't know about your CAROB pods...but the Tamarino Trees and Bean Pods --in Costa Rica --are a tasty squirrel TREAT. I see squirrel nests in many Tamarindo trees.

Stosh: thanks for replying. How is that ramita rota of yours??
Well I think they would be O.K. Like I said I see zillions of pods all opened around the seed area of the pod and the debris and characteristic "two channel" teeth marks telltale they have been consumed by tree squirrels. Since the carob seeds have been used for millenia as weigh measure for gold (that's how we ket the word Karat in 18K gold) and dried as a replacement for flour as well as the pod material has been used as a replacment for chocolate for dog food since it does not have theobromine, I though to double check with TSB just in case before I went a gave my Trooper some.
Gracias!!
