I have a rehabbed backyard squirrel that is about 10 months old now and who has lived in my backyard for about 6 months. For the last two days he has moved much slower and seemed to wobble or lose his balance as he tries to climb or walk the fence. He eats peanuts several times a day from our backporch but I also see him eating the food he finds himself . Could he have MBD?

was he fed the healthy diet?
wean did he wean? at what age? and what formula did you fed?
do you think he may have fallen?...
a healthy sq will have healthy bones and have a better chance if they do fall..
will he come to you for a good thorough check up?
do you have an infirmary cage set up just in case?
hope he bounces back and is just stunned..
preditors stalk wounded... so please keep up with him...
making everything easily accessed, water food and shelter if he is too wild to take back into captivity....
sending good vibes

He was fed Esbilac as a baby, lots of greens and variety until he went outside. Would that matter even at his age now? My DH actually managed to catch him last night and we overnighted him in his release cage. When I tried to move him into a carrier this morning to take him to the vet he managed to get away from me. He also has teeth that need trimmed monthly. At the last two vet visits one top tooth didn't need trimmed and now I'm worried that he has problems with the root of his tooth. Its a mess....

He also has teeth that need trimmed monthly. At the last two vet visits one top tooth didn't need trimmed and now I'm worried that he has problems with the root of his tooth. Its a mess....I had the asame tooth issue... after having to trim two uppers after a severe dental accident where lowers were broken and as the cam e back in the tops would need trimmed... appartantly my sqs uppers were also impacted, but it took a few months to discover... same thing, one upper grew and the other stopped..
after I noted a foul mouth odor, we went and had xrays discovering an abscess... we treated with ABs for 5 months off and om when it was agreed the tooth needed to be extracted..
thsi may gey mucky with a released sq.... is he calm when you go to trimming and in captivity in general?
problem is lower will continue to grow without upper being there... and if the tooth has stopped growing ..it's going to abscess, just a matter of time.
extraction of rodent teeth is tricky...
an exotic dentist is a must... but for now xrays will show abscess
other symptoms can be loss of appetite, sluggishness, fever, runny ears, eyes and nose... sneezing, bad breath... swelling ...
all significant signs... keep an eye on him..
give him a good check up... feel all leg bones for lumps and divets, same with spine...
hope he is okay...poor guy..

Hmmm, so it doesn't sound like his tooth problem is probably causing his wobbly movement... and maybe not MBD either... I just pray he comes back down soon because not being able to get to him is driving me crazy!!! I'm worried he's going to fall or a cat's going to get him. I know so many other of you guys have been in the same situation....

I would suspect a fall and a warm safe place is ideal until he can navigate safely... but when you are assessing him, do ck his mouth too for any odd smells...
others may have thoughts as well... someone will be along soon
:wave123 good luck

Thanks! If I get him back I'll be sure to check him over. He's fairly tame and he lets us handle him when we need to. He is sneezing too so I wouldn't be surprised if he has more than one problem. Maybe just a little rest will help him. I really appreciate all the info you've shared with me. Nothing beats experience....

Unikorngrrl you are soooo right! :) TSB is where I learned what I needed to do to raise the baby squirrels in the first place, and where my guy's malocclusion was first diagnosed. They have already save his furry little life twice... now I think he just needs prayers to get him out of his tree and then maybe we can help again....

Some good news!..... He made it back down this evening and we were able to put him back in his release cage so he is safe and sound. He even seemed like he might be moving a little better. Hopefully we can get him to the vet in the am.
