Hi, I was searching the internet for some help and came across your site. I love feeding the squirrels in my backyard and at our local park. They are also my favorite to take pictures of:) There are a few at the park that will take food from our hands. My husband and I sit at one particular bench and feed the same ones. One of our favorite squirrels, she is the biggest, we noticed a tick on her ear. I know it bothers her because when she is up in the tree, she rubs that ear on the branch. I know I can't grab her and have my husband take the tick off. I thought about if I could get her in a small cage then I could take her to a veteranarian here in town to get the tick off and then take her back home at the park. I haven't called our vet yet. Any advice would be great, I want to help her. She just looks up at us with the sweetest eyes and so trusting.

Thanks

If you are able to get close enough to touch her, a drop or two of Revolution, which is one of the "spot on" meds, would do the trick. You have to be able to get a drop or two on the skin between the shoulders though and that depends on your relationship with the squirrel!

It is a prescription but can be purchased through www.joespetmeds.com - he kitten formula is the least pricey and what everyone uses.

Hi,
Thank you for the advice. The vet I take my German Shepherd to sold me 1 dose of Revolution. It is more expensive than ordering on the internet, but I wanted to get in on my favorite squirrel quickly to get the tick off. I went back to the park and noticed that the tick on her ear was gone! I still wanted to put the medicine on her though. I didn't get to because she was leary of me holding my hand over her with the medicine as I was holding out food for her to take with my other hand. I also found out why she was the biggest squirrel coming to eat, she is a momma:) I will just keep getting closer with her and hopefully I can get some medicine on her soon.

You should check to see if it's safe to use on nursing moms.

Ok, I will check on that. The vets office never heard of it being used on a squirrel. Thank you very much:)

This Joe's place... Is there a catch? How is it cheaper? Is it expired/about to expire?

That stuff costs a small fortune at the vet's office.

No catch - I have some now. It is fresh and new - and shipped from Australia. It took one week for me to get it - and that was the week of July 4th last year so post and freight lost a day. It's the real deal.

You can also purchase things like Ciproflocacin and SMZ-TMP from Cal Vet Supply - with 12-18 month expiration dates...it is labeled for use in aquariums, which makes it okay and legal. They are located in the US, too (CA obviously).

Ok so that Cal Vet place is the real deal as well? I think I came accross them when looking for eye drops for some sick kittens in the past. However, when it comes to eyes, I didn't want to mess around; which was a good thing as the kittens were quite sensitive and had allergic reactions to the stuff normally used/recommended.

There is something to be said about going to the vet at least to get stabilized.

I'll keep these ressources in mind. Was shipping from Joe's very expensive?

No more than I would expect to pay in the US. I had no idea it was coming from Australia until I saw the label.
