Ok, I am not sure about this situation, but thought I would post here and ask. I feed my wild greys around my house. Well this afternoon I went out on my porch and I heard what sounded like a squirrel crying. I go and look over the fence and under my neighbors steps there is a squirrel lying under there in the shade. She was the one making this crying sound. At first I thought maybe she was sick or hot( since it is 80 degrees here in Chicago today). I was worried. Well I gave her a nut and she ate it. I went back inside then. Well I started hearing her cry again. I go back out and now I see there is a male squirrel( he looked young), pestering her. Everytime he would go near her she would really start crying like. Well he kind of forced himself on her back and was humping her. She started wailing like crazy and ran with him on top of her trying to get him off of her. I kind of yelled"no no, get off of her!" well he finally jumped off. Well then she goes back and lays under the porch and he follows her. She lays there for about 5 more minutes and goes out into the yard. She was on the other side of the fence( in my neighbors yard) so I threw her a hazelnut and she sat there and was eating it. I also threw the male squirrel a nut too as he was trailing right behind her. He picked up the nut and spit it out. He then was staring at me chattering his teeth! I believe he was mad at me for interfering and being there! lol. Well the girl went off and climbed the telephone pole and he followed her. Was this some sort of mating thing??? I mean she definitely did not seem receptive to me in my opinion. she was crying and even snapped at him once. What was going on??

I saw this very thing going on in my backyard the other day.
A young sexually mature male pestering a female, and she will squeal and squeak and chatter when he would try to approach her.

It looked like the young male had and injured eye too, probably from the female keeping him at bay.

I wouldn't worry too much, judging by what I saw and now what you've seen, sounds like natural behavior to me.

I have seen this happen before and I don't think you need to worry . What you describes seems a normal behavior ...
Thanks for caring for them

The crying is the females letting the boys know that they are in season and ready to mate. It is such a sad, mournful cry, too!

I witnessed this kind of situation also and finally the female decided to give in. The happy couple was actually on a low branch about 20 feet from me, doing the mattress dance.

When it was all done, the female took off, but the male just collapsed flat on the branch, 4 paws hangin'. I couldn't help but LOL... and found myself nearly asking him if he wanted a cigarette. :jump :jump
