Had these babies delivered to the bar today. Found in and air filter of a car. One managed to escape with mom, one caught by a dog... People were going to give these guys to the dog.:soapbox A friend who was there called me and asked if I would take em. The landowner would not allow me to come try to reunite with mom- he doesnt want them on his property. So, even tho mom is looking for them... they are now with me. I dont know anything about pineys, didnt even know we had them around here. Looking for advice, and/or foster parents... I have my hands full here :sanp3

BABY SQUIRREL CARE:

First thing needed is to warm the squirrel.
Now check for any injuries and/ or wounds.
Hydrate the squirrel right away (use a 1cc syringe) and go slow.
Give homemade pedialyte every hour for eight hours (max 24 hours).
Once hydrated make Goats Milk formula, feed 5-7% of their body weight every 4 hours.
Make sure you stimulate after each feeding to help the squirrel go potty if under 5 weeks.

IMPORTANT: Babies must be kept WARM --NEVER feed a cold baby.
_______

+ Emergency Care for Baby Squirrels +

1. Warm the squirrel (never feed a cold squirrel)
2. Place in plastic container or box w/ pieces of fleece
3. Rehydrate the squirrel (feed pedialyte first 24 hours)

Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup warm water
1/4 tsp salt (teaspoon)
1 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)

4. Slowly feed with a 1cc syringe - head UP tail DOWN
5. Keep warm at all time - fill bottle with hot water (cover bottle with sock)
__________

Goats Milk Recipe:
1 cup Goats Milk * (if can - dilute)
1/3 cup Full Fat Vanilla Yogurt
1/3 cup Heavy Cream (frig section)

(lasts 72 hours in frig)
__________

WARMTH:
1. Heating Pad, on low with a fleece blanket on top --place the squirrel in the blanket.
2. Rice Buddy --put rice in sock (tie off) microwave for 30 sec - place next to the squirrel.
3. Fill empty water bottles with hot water and slide into a single sock then place next to squirrel.

Once the squirrel is settled in order Fox Valley formula:
http://www.henryspets.com/
http://www.foxvalleynutrition.com/main/home.asp (32/40 birth to 4 wks – 20/50 4 wks & older)
_______

Hydration / Pinch Test
Once the squirrel is all warmed up you can feed him a little pedialyte every five minute by placing a syringe tip to the corner of his mouth. You will probably have to do this for a good hour or two until he is feeling well enough to take a few cc's at one time.......... when this happens you can feed him the pedialyte every 30 minutes to an hour.

The most important thing to do right now is to get him fully hydrated..... you can perform a pinch test between the shoulder blade to see how well he is --if the skin is pinched and goes down fast then the pedialyte is working, if the skin stays up or goes down slowly more liquid hydration is needed (hydrate up to 24 hours w/ pedialyte).

Milo's Mom

yes, you can feed them FV. Personally, I'd do some hydration first (better safe than sorry and it will not hurt them)...just once. Then I'd start them on FV mixed at 3:1 for 24 hours then go to full strength.

Reds.....lock your doors, Nancy is already on the way...will probably be there before you wake up...peeking in the windows trying to determine the best method of reaching the babies!! LOL!!

EDIT: I know you said they were nursing when found....last summer I had 2 babies fall from a nest in my yard because of a hawk. Mom was there with them all morning and I literally watched them fall....they were dehydrated. I made the assumption they were not dehydrated since I saw Mom....I was wrong.

Oh my gosh, I'm in love!! How cute!! I'm so sorry that you were not allowed to try and reunite them with their mama. Wait, AND they were going to give them to the dogs??!!! Yikes, people really scare me sometimes. :shakehead Wow, so glad they made their way to you, though. They're precious :thumbsup :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

Ok, so.... I just got done playing with them.. they warmed up to me pretty well. I fed FV, but I used 2 tsp FV, 8 tsp water. The boy officially weighs 80grams and ate 2cc- the girl weighs 65 grams, and ate 4cc. SquirrelGirlsMom has offered to foster... hopefully we get our crops in within the next 2 days and we will be able to deliver. :)

aww precious reds
Pine squirrels look a lot like reds, but unlike reds they have orangy bellies, i think another (more technical name for what some people call 'pineys') name for them is douglas squirrels

I thought a piney and red were the same thing ?? Im so confused :thinking . Well, after a little research, I have determined them to be aprox 5-6 weeks old. Eyes open, but cannot raise tail or sit up, and still doing the belly crawl. Does that sound right??

Not far from Elkhart - hour and a half maybe. If you look at the southern tip of lake michigan- its pointing right at me- 30 miles straight south of that.

Pine squirrels and red squirrels ARE the same - Lord how cute! You may want to quickly move before Nancy gets there (though she does travel with 100 yards of fleece at all times)...

Well... I gotta tell ya... NOBODY around here wants them. I honestly never noticed them around here, but then again, I never really looked for them. Everyone I talked to around here says to kill em... WHAT the ..!?!? (Apparently they are a nuisance.) They are so scared and trembling, its like holding a half inflated water balloon covered in KY jelly. .. BUT, when I talk to them to calm them- they stare me straight in the eye with the sweetest look ever! Like they are saying "Youre not going to hurt me, right?" It melts my heart :Love_Icon I will try and get better pics today... in the daylight. The color on the male is brilliant red, and the female is more fox colored with a brilliant red stripe.

They eat just what a grey or foxer would eat--but less. :D
Both the Red and the Douglas are known as Pine Squirrels or Chicaree. That's why it gets so confusing from region to region.

So cute! Reds....little tazmanian devils in red coats!!! lol Jeffrey was def. the exception to the rule!!! Generally reds grow up and wild up, no matter how much you try to stop that from happening! We have tons of reds here (only have reds and greys...still trying to convince IR to ship me some of those gorgeous black babies! Although I read we now have all white ones not too far from me now.) I love watching the wild spring red babies playing..so cute!
