This is an update to the squirrel family that was on livecam here:

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/gray-squirrel-nest

The camera went down a couple days ago and when it went back up, the mom and all 6 babies were gone. :(

In the last 24 hours an adult squirrel has entered the box and not left. Not sure if this is the mom or another squirrel. It appears from the video that the entire lower left foot is missing. The squirrel is clearly in pain. It also looks like there may be wounds on the belly near the left leg. You can view he livecam to confirm this. The pic is grainy but it looks clear enough. Can anyone near here help?

The squirrel box is located in Honeoye Falls, NY near Rochester.

It felt terrible to lose the mom (Mia) and babies but now having to watch this squirrel without a foot/lower leg is just awful. He/She just lies on it's back with it leg in the air. :Cry

There is some disagreement about the foot. One other person thinks the foot is clenched up. Could be possible, it is hard to tell. What is clear is that this squirrel is sick/hurt. It has not moved in 12 hours and does not even sleep (eyes open).

[edit] I think the foot is just clenched up. The squirrel still appears sick and has not moved, eaten or had anything to drink for the last 12 hours.

How can you see the back feet? The tail is in the way.

For a while the tail was not in the way. It appears that foot was clenched up (like a fist). Something seems off, the squirrel has not moved for 12 hours.

She looks worse. Can't get up and not really moving.

Too bad the "rehabber" who owns the box refuses to help!

Some people think this is the mom. I think she is dying. :(

I think so as well. The other squirrel alarming nonstop is freaking her out so she keeps trying to get up. Them saying they couldnt help bc she would go up higher is a bunch of BS.

And now I am blocked for "inappropriate language"? Really??? I used no inappropriate language on there...and now whatever I type..even Hello...is blocked for inappropriate language. I dont think Gerri liked what I had to say.

Yea, this whole thing stinks. Mia is still alive, she is a fighter.

Watching her for the last couple weeks, I was amazed at how good of a mom she was. Mia worked so hard for her little pups. I can't imagine how fast things went bad. :(

We still don't know it's her. Has anyone had a clear shot of her belly?

Can anyone who has a squirrel comment on the breathing? Is it fast?

Squirrel respiration is faster than ours. That does not look alarming. She is not choking/gasping/wheezing etc which is good.

Her breathing may be a little fast, but I am not positive. They do breathe faster than we do. I think Ellie is sleeping now, so I will see if I can sneak in and get a video of her breathing.

Actually, the position of the squirrel in the box now appears (to me) to be a much more natural sleeping position. The flat out on the back eyes open barely breathing earlier was much more worrisome.

TubeDriver

Actually her respiration rate is about 105/pm. It is somewhat irregular too. I am no expert but I think that is somewhat elevated?

Ellie is not sleeping, but she is resting on top of her cage in an upright position. Since she is awake I could not video her (she'd run and hide). Her breathing looks very similar in speed/rate to the one in the box. When she is sniffing it appears a little faster.

The thing that bothers me (and it may just be an unknown on my part), if she is sleeping/resting why are her eyes open? The eyes open thing is throwing me...makes me think something is wrong.

Plus the fact that she has been in this box since 7:30PM Thursday. Earlier, she appeared to be trying to get up but could not.

I can't watch video of that happy squirrel family while Mia is fighting for her life and her babies are probably dead. :(

No, I'm still watching Mia:Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon ....Just thought I would throw it out there.
I don't think the owner of this box would give up location for anyone ELSE to help, do you??
And why do they say they have all this fancy wireless cameras and equipment but then ask for donations for a wooden box? Really?
Maybe you get her down and help her and ask for donations for her vet bill, then I will think about it.

Yea, I was going to donate for a new box but now I just feel that box is cursed. I don't want any other squirrel to make the mistake that little Mia made when she started her family there. If that was my box, I would pull the camera and tear down the box. Maybe make another, bigger box somewhere else?

It's so sad. Monday morning it went offline, they were gone when it came back.

NYW had some recordings but not between 12pm and 2pm. They were all there at 12, all gone by 2. So we don't even know exactly where the babies went.

I do remember the babies being spooked by something off camera shortly before it went offline also, and makes me wonder if that has something to do with them being gone.

It was pretty crowded in there so she may have moved them. Still something seems off about the whole thing. I'm worried about the babies.

I have pretty much given up on the babies. :( I just hope the Mia pulls through at this point.

I know. Poor things. Either the new nest is destroyed and that's why she came back to this one, or she is too injured to get to the new one.

It's terrible to think of all 6 babies gone. and now mom looks like she will follow that fate.

I don't care if its mom or not, this squirrel appears to need help. Her (or his) breathing is so labored while sitting up that her head is shaking with it

She just made a very bad exit. took her a long time to get out then sounded like she fell...clawing on the way down.

Thank-you Skul...I honestly can't even look at the feed. This is breaking my heart. I do not understand someone who would place the cam and yet not help this squirrel. I am so suspicious of the whole circumstance of the others disappearing. :shakehead

Has anyone called him to see if he would be willing to help this squirrel?

I Googled his name and contact info. I don't think he is very accepting of help. It also says he is a naturalist which is why I think he doesn't intervene.
