View Full Version : Breathing Clicks?
HisNameIsSecret

I have a baby boy, he doing great, my dog actually saved him from a crow. I've had him for a few days, he is about 5 weeks old, just opened his eyes yesterday, his name is Secret (yes, Secret Squrriel). While he was sleeping I hear a type of clicking noise. Hes not moving his teeth so it must not be grinding, right? I'm worried he has a breathing problem. Hes moving around just fine though.
He sleeps in a pet carrier, I wish I could get him a larger pen but this is all I have for now :dono . Its heated just the right temperature, 99 degrees. I put a bed of wood shavings for him to burrow in. Is that safe?

Someone should be here soon. Put him to your ear...do you hear clicks with every breath???
stepnstone

Is the clicking just when he's sleeping that you hear it?
Put your ear to his chest, do you hear it with each breath?
Molly... great minds.

They make all sorts of noises when they sleep. A constant clicking from the chest when breathing is a sign of pneumonia. Watch the clip in this thread:
http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32290
Wood shavings are really not ideal, especially cedar, though pine is not good either. The oils that make that "piney" smell are bad for their lungs. He would be much better with some old t-shirts, or preferably, some pieces of fleece (like polarfleece or the soft microfleece). They don't ravel into threads that can get wound around little arms and necks...
Can you tell us what you are feeding him, how often, etc?
Also, just out of curiosity, where in Maine? I don't see many other Mainers here (I really can't claim the title as technically I am from away:) 0

What size syringes are you using?
Wood shavings are not good.
Can you get fleece? Even old nightgowns. Something that you can cut up and pile up as they love to burrow under the soft stuff.
You can also get some sort of a critter keeper or a storage box with a lid, you will have to make tons of holes, but lots of people use that too temporarily. I will post some pictures later.
What part of Maine are you in?
What type formula are you feeding and what is his weight?

i hear clicks in his chest. its constant. I do use wood shavings. And whats funny I actually suggested old T-shirts to use. but I didnt know ://. if it is that what do i do!!!!
stepnstone
05-02-2013, 07:46 PM
Take out the wood shavings... not good for them unless it's an all natural like Aspen. Could be part of the problem.
Use fleese or a material like old t-shirts, pillow case, flannel.
Do not use towels or material like that, they can get their nails caught in the loops and cause injury.

The clicking is called aspiration pneumonia! This baby is in serious trouble and needs AB meds !
Nancy- do we have anyone near that can help?

You will need to get some kind of antibiotic.
The choice drug would be Baytril that is for animals or Cipro, which is for humans. Cipro is often prescribed for UTI's. If you have no antibiotics, call anyone that you know to see if they have something. We can break down most things, as long as they would also be a safe choice for a squirrel.
We can dose this for you if you have a weight.

Well, Secret's human, just know that I have the meds you need, and can also hook you up with syringes, nipples, formula, etc., and I won't take your squirrel unless you want me to. I have all of this stuff ready so I can do just this - help squirrels and their finders. I don't charge nor do I accept money for it.
If you want to do this tomorrow I won't be able to drive to meet you but you can come to my place of work in Scarborough and we can do this there - I can bring the stuff to work. Just PM me and let me know.

I will eventualy hand him over to her :/...BUT...she invited me to help her when ever she needs me to care for the babies she raises. She has many different small species. Im excited but worried at the same time. I am so compassionate and loving. Ive been crying because I thought he had no chance. When I called Mrs. Echo She turned my frown upside down. Told me that he will be ok in her hands. She has squirrels running around her backyard that she has raised. Im Going to meet her Saturday this week.

Secret will have NO chance if you wait until Saturday to get him antibiotics.
Was this wonderful rehabber concerned about that?
Please also check out her place really well. Some of the people that sound too good to be true usually are.

If you did mean that you're going to wait until Saturday, that's too long. If you want to make sure this baby lives, he needs antibiotics now, like tonight. Babies die very, VERY quickly.

I also changed his box into a larger red bin. I placed an old bed sheet on the bottom and a warm water bottle wrapped in cloth to keep him warm, a pillow pet to simulate his mother, and also a whole bunch of cheerios for him to find.

No, I am not Mrs. Echo. I did give the finder the name of a rehabber in her area, perhaps this person is affiliated with her. I am hoping this little does not actually have aspiration pneumonia, and is only making baby noises, since pneumonia won't wait until Saturday.
If you change your mind, PM me. I will bring meds to work tomorrow just in case.

Can you share what she told you?
What formula does she recommend?
Did she ask how and what you are feeding him?
Did she want to know the weight?
Did she tell you that he needs stimulation?
Did she tell you the amount to feed?
Just asking, because if not, along with abs, you will
need to know the RIGHT answers to keep him alive.

She IS concern about the clicking. She said to not feed him the kitten milk tonight, just water and cheerios. She did not ask for the weight for the meds. I do need to stimulate him a lot more.

Hon, gonna try this one more time, okay.
Kitten formula is not appropriate for a baby squirrel. It has much too much protein. I can give you formula made up for a baby squirrel.
Water bottles are a pain because they get cold and you have to mess with them all the time. A heating pad is better.
I have pretty much everything to help these little guys. Just let me know if you want them.

Sweetie, he is way to young to be eating crap, oh I mean cheerios.
IF anything, she should have told you to put some kind of block in with him.
BUT at this age he should ONLY be on formula, and a good formula that is designed
for squirrels not cats or dogs.
Seriously, this woman scares me.:shakehead
SammysMom
05-02-2013, 09:50 PM
You NEVER give kitten milk. Cheerios are not nutritionally healthy for squirrels. This baby needs nutrition. You can make a temporary formula from goats milk. Below is the recipe.
Once rehydrated begin to feed Fox Valley formula which can be ordered from http://foxvalleynutrition.com or while waiting for that to arrive use recipe below. As a general rule you will feed 5 - 7% of their body weight per feeding
Homemade Goats Milk Recipe -
1 cup Goats Milk * (if can - dilute)
1/3 cup Full Fat Vanilla Yogurt
1/3 cup Heavy Cream (frig section)
(lasts 72 hours in frig)

Yes. And then dose according to the way that SammysMom told you.
Make sure you get the right amount, he needs hydration and something for his tummy too. (probiotic) Put the syringe in his mouth between his cheek and gum so that you don't aspirate him when you give the med. This should only amount to a drop or two and NO MORE, if you measure correctly.
Are you going to meet with CritterMom tomorrow.

This baby is in serious trouble! I find this whole scenario very disturbing.

Without being put in the hands of an experienced rehabilitator it simply is not going to survive.

Well, let's see how little Secret looks and acts - I am hoping they bring him with them today. I am supposed to be seeing them at noon and have heard no differently yet. I have the meds all mixed and ready so we can get some into him right away.
Your being very patent, I hope you do get to see him. :grouphug

I just heard from Secret's mommy. She contacted the rehabber in her town who's name I gave her and they brought Secret over there this morning. Caryl is a well known rehabber up here and one of the few rabies vector people in the state. They decided to leave Secret with her to grow up with her squirrels and be released from there. Apparently the clicking was not pneumonia and he is actually in pretty good shape.:thumbsup
So I will take all my meds and food home and regroup for the next one!
I asked her to drop by the board and give us updates when she got them.

Wow, that was one of the most confusing, frustrating threads in awhile. I expected for them to not show up and the squirrel to eventually die. I'm glad that only half of that was true.

Sometimes this board can be pretty overwhelming. When I first started here I had a heck of a time finding specific threads and would spend forever hunting for them. We need to take that into consideration when dealing with newcomers. Not to mention that at most boards you post a question and then wait a week for an answer - here you have 20 before you can blink!

I totally hear you about this.
When I move a thread, or I see people who post but don't come back on
I ALWAYS send them an email with the link to their post and tell them that there is help.
This poster actually posted a comment in the thread "Uh oh! Charging!".
I pm'd her, and emailed her, to alert her that I had moved her thread, and gave her the new link.
It can be overwhelming if there is no direction. :shakehead
I'm glad that she found help. :grouphug

Thank you Secret's mom for getting him to a rehabber. It can be pretty scary when they make those weird noises that they just seem to make. Every sound seems like it might be pneumonia... Glad you were able to get to the rehabber. We would love to hear how he is doing when you get updates! Stick around, once you get hooked on squirrels you find they are EVERYWHERE. Maybe someday you will help another one.:thumbsup

Im now going to volenteer and go there at least 3-4 times a week. She is so sweet and caring for all the animals. There is so much to learn and do for rehabbing animals. Rehabbing will be added to my trades of life.

Something tells me that you have done many things right in your life.
Many finders come on and want to keep their squirrels even when they are on death's door. And most of the time, their threads are now in All Squirrels go to Heaven.
You did not hesitate for one moment to turn him over to someone more capable.
You were his angel. :bowdown
