View Full Version : Wild squirrel paralyzed back legs

I have an adult squirrel in my yard whose back legs appear to be paralyzed. I saw him dragging himself around over a week ago and thought nature would take its course. Today I found out that he is still alive and living under my screen room. He has been through some terrible storms in the past week. He is a fighter! He is able to scramble around quick and is even able to climb up trees with only his front legs! (I have no idea how he gets down.) Since he hasn't succumbed quickly to his injury, what, if anything, should I do for him? I can't capture him (he's too fast) and I wouldn't if I could (we have small kids, a dog, and a cat - he would be in greater danger with us). I put out some of my kids' peanut butter crackers and he snatched them all up, so he will accept food from us. Is there any food, typical in a non-squirrel-as-pets home, that I should be putting out for him? Or is it better to not feed him and avoid creating a dependence or prolonging his suffering? Or is animal control the best way to go?

Anyone here on the board close to you that can find him a forever home???? if he cant be rehabbed. Not having use of back legs is a terrible handicap.

Where exactly are you? Perhaps we could find someone to take him.

Thank you all again for your offers of assistance. I haven't seen the squirrel since my last post. He may have moved on but there is evidence another animal was under our screen room (something knocked out some of the lattice). I'm going to keep my eye out for him, but I think he's gone. Wish I had happier news, but at least he's not suffering any more.
