View Full Version : Where You Can Buy An O-Ring Syringe!

I looked everywhere and could only find them online, with long shipping times. Then I went to my local Walgreens. I found what is apparently a new product, called a "True Easy Syringe", which is an oral syringe in the personal care section of the pharmacy.
The item number is 215022 and the UPC code is 311917150581. I paid $7.99 plus tax. The packaging doesn't mention o-ring, but it clearly has one and is different from any of the other syringes I've been able to find. It holds up to 10 mL (10 cc).
I just used it for the first time a little while ago and it is smooth as silk! The baby squirrel ate the entire 10 mL, the most I've ever gotten him to eat. It didn't jerk and squirt like the other syringes, risking aspiration.
I assume it is a new product, because I couldn't find it on the Walgreens website, nor did the UPC code locator produce anything. It is available via Amazon, however there is a separate shipping charge from the outside vendor.
Hope this info helps someone looking (desperately, as I was) for an o-ring syringe!

On the one hand it's great that you found one at a retail store, but PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL with that 10cc syringe! The pressure in a 10cc is such that it shoots right down the baby's throat and into his lungs if you are not the best, most careful squirrel feeder on the planet. I urge you to go to henryspets.com and order yourself some 3cc Leur Lock syringes. You can use the 10cc while you're waiting. :)

Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci are two of the most famous figures from the Italian Renaissance period. Both were prolific painters, architects, engineers that changed the course of art and technological history. A great testament to the power and longevity of their works are that many of their masterpieces are easily recognized 500 years after their original creation.
Upon deeper study, you will discover there are many interesting things about these two legendary men in addition to their art. Beside the fact that they both lived in the same country at the same time in history, and that they pushed art, thought and science forward like few people before them, I think that perhaps a piece of their personal philosophy may be their greatest, and most subtle, gift to us. Both men are credited for often saying the phrase “ancora imparo” which means “I am still learning.” In fact, at the ripe age of 87, Michelangelo wrote this inscription on a sketch he was performing. If two of the arguably most brilliant minds in history realized that learning is a never-ending adventure, I suggest we all come to the same realization.

I was excited to find o-ring syringes available locally because, like many folks, I had never before experienced the joy of raising an orphaned squirrel, nor did I anticipate this one. A guy stopped me on the street and said, "You want a baby squirrel?" (It had fallen from the nest that morning and had been kept warm in the guy's knit cap all day).
In such situations, you don't have the luxury of ordering online and waiting for delivery. You need to get hydration and food started immediately. I can't think of a better way to cause aspiration of liquids than to try using a regular syringe, which sticks and jerks and squirts unpredictably.
I understand the danger of the larger-sized syringe, but in an emergency, it seems to me to be the best option. Thanks to everyone for their help with this issue...Robert Earl seems to be doing just fine!

He's a gray squirrel (lighting made him look blond), now about 7 weeks (we got him at 5 weeks). I'm feeding the Esbilac formula with heavy cream from the squirreltales website, with monkey chow and apple slices available for free feeding (he's nibbled the monkey chow, but I can't see any interest in apple yet). I also got him a water bottle, but don't know if he's using it. He seems to be thriving, growing quickly.
I'll need to take a full-figure photo...I'll post it when available.

I'm feeding the Esbilac formula with heavy cream from the squirreltales website,
Unfortunately there are a lot of websites out there with misinformation or just plain out dated information.
Esbilac changed their formula and it is no longer recommended for squirrels, they do not thrive well on it in the long run.
If your baby has not developed diarrhea yet consider yourself lucky, it's just a matter of time.
THE ESBILAC ISSUE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In light of the recent problems rehabbers have been experiencing with Esbilac formula, it has been decided that the best alternative is Fox Valley 32/40.

If you call in your order and tell him you need it quickly he'll be happy to oblige. He can ship to you regular post 3-5 days and overnight. He's very nice and very easy to work with.
In the meantime you will need to feed your baby a home-made formula, but please for the sake of the baby, do not feed this for more than 4-7 days. It's a great temporary replacer milk but it lacks certain vitamins and minerals that the babies need to thrive. This recipe will ensure that your baby will be well nourished until your order from Fox Valley arrives.
Jackie (Jackie in Tampa) has graciously offered her temporary replacement formula recipe.
Jackie's Goat Milk Recipe
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup dannon all natural vanilla yogurt
Mix well and keep in a covered plastic or glass container in the refrigerator. Replace after 48 hours.
Please note, this website has several links that still mention Esbilac and we need to keep these links active as they do contain excellent information so please keep in mind that Fox Valley is now the formula of choice for raising baby squirrels.

He continues to thrive on Esbilac and whipping cream, now transitioning to apple slices, avocado, monkey chow, etc. I can't imagine a healthier or more active baby squirrel.

Dan--I'm right here in Richmond! And Sweeper is just up the road in New Kent! I have plenty of good 3ml syringes. My babies have all decided they're too grown up for formula. Hope we can have a face to face sometime. Your boy is beautiful. The monkey chow is good tho there are easily available rodent blocks that have better overall nutrition. I'd go light on the fruit--try some broccoli, brussel sprouts or plain ol spring mix. When they're little they can get a taste for sweets just like kids. Won't matter for awhile but later on it's a health issue. Of course if you're releasing him, he'll eat what he wants, but if he's non releasable better get his diet under control now or he'll be a very unhealthy captive squirrel. Us hoomans love our critters to death all too often.
