Hi folks, newbie apologies in advance because I don't know if this is a life-threatening injury or not. My husband & I are monitoring a female who visits us daily for the odd cracker or piece of bread. She appears to have recently given birth & might be nursing. Today we noticed what appears to be a deep bite wound to her left cheek, with some flesh torn away. To the naked eye it looks like a dark brown smudge on her face. This must have happened today. She doesn't appear to be in distress, or pain. She is still approaching us for snacks & doesn't appear impeded in any way.
Do I need to steel myself for an ugly end, or do squirrels go through this routinely? Thank y'all so much for your input :thankyou

A pic would be great. Facial wounds can go either way - they can easily abscess and facial abscesses in squirrels are a real problem...or it can heal just fine.
Does she come regularly enough for you to give her a med in her food on as close to a daily basis as possible if need be?

Thank you for that suggestion.. yes, she is here every day and runs right up to us. What kind of medicine is appropriate? Is it something you can just ball up in bread?

Actually, one of the best and most effective antibiotics for them is Cipro, which is very popular for humans. Getting your hands on a tab of Cipro (they are normally 500mg) would be a good place to start. It will need to be appropriately dosed so when you are snapping pics tomorrow, get some of the whole squirrel so folks on here can guess at a weight. And ask around and see if you can get a cipro - it is so effective that lots of times people don't take the whole prescription, despite being told to...

If no cipro, see what you can get.

Hello nice friends:) Our sweet mama squirrel still sports the wound, but isn't displaying any signs of worsening health. (We don't have access to meds anyway) We did get a start the day before when she showed up with her cheeks hugely swollen, we thought from infection. The next day, no swelling! Food stuffing??
At any rate I have observed her chewing various vegetations around the yard. Whether or not this was instinct owing to any medicinal properties of said roughage.. :dono
Happily 2 of the babies made their ground debut late yesterday. Scampered around a coupla minutes before exiting up their tree.
If the admin needs to move or delete this thread now that we seem to be off red alert, I don't mind. Thanks again to all who generously offered input:bowdown
