this morning when I was feeding one of the little guys I got from Sissy I noticed something on his elbow--looked cheesy. I thought I'd dropped something on him but looking closer it was a wound with the cheesy stuff in it. The stuff doesn't smell pussy and the wound isn't swollen or angry. What the heck IS it? I cleaned it out with Vetricin and the pix is several hours later--closed and looking good, should I start him on an antibiotic? I have Baytril and Metacam in suspension. That paw was kind of limp when I got him. It seemed to be getting better. I thought his wrist was sprained. Did a cyst rupture? Seems like an abscess would produce smelly puss. It was at/in the joint. I'd appreciate advice.

Sorry the pix aren't clearer, they were taken with an iPad

Miriam has a thread up right now about a baby that presented with a limp foot/ankle and now has erupted in acscesses, including at that site. Given that, I would definitely put this baby on a round of Baytril/cipro.

Thank you SO much. I'll get the little guy medicated right away. Is squirrel pus different from regular pus. This stuff is more like cottage cheese and has no bad smell. I know chicken pus is different.

Was advised by a very to use Baytril/cipro and SMZ for abscesses. Baytril for how fast it works and the SMZ is for tissue wounds. Baytril for 7 setsand SMZ 14 to 21 says depending on the wound.

Hey Julie. Yeah it's Willie. A friend who is a pediatric nurse said the stuff sounded like that found in a fatty cyst. He's had some Baytril and eats OK. He doesn't look like he feels too good but that may be the Baytril. Poor little guy. The wound site looks good so I'm hopeful he'll be fine.

sounds like common cellulitus, expected from a wound like that..
I would say it's the bacteria that is making willie feel bad...
as soon as we start the AB treatment , we also start to feel better...
I would use Baytril/ cipro alone and keflex could be added if the wound worsens.
Hope Willie feels better soon

a culture can reveal alot as far as what ABs are best...
they are really not that expensive to grow if your vets will send out to the local lab..
the cipro alone probably will annihilate the bad bugs,
cephalexin is well tolerated if it's a stubborn bacteria...25mg/kg:thumbsup

The wound looks great and Willie is feeling better. His little paw is limp still but he seems to be using it more so I'm thinking that's a good sign. He eats just fine and other than the scab and the paw he's doing great. Thanks everybody. I freaked cause that stuff looked nasty. I'll keep you posted for the next couple of days. The Baytril alone seems to be working. Yay Willie! The scab is clean and nothing swollen but should I be soaking that place in warm water to keep it open and draining?
