View Full Version : Squirrels in distress
Teeter

As I was getting in my car 10 min. ago, I heard the squealing of baby squirrels in distress. There seemed to be at least 3 different sources. I found one baby squirrel on the ground, scooped him up, wrapped him in fleece, put in box with hot water bottle. He is just curled up now sleeping. Another squirrel was making his way down, but then changed his mind and went back up to nest.
I think there is one more up there. It is chilly here still, probably 10 C.
The tree is very high, a spruce, and way too high for a ladder.
Yesterday found a dead squirrel in my driveway, almost totally eaten. Now I'm thinking it's the mother.
I know that babies will leave the nest in search of mom. I'm getting upset they are so so close yet unreachable. I'm keeping vigil now, must go out there and look again. They've stopped squealing. Breaking my heart.
What to do???

I think that the best you can do is to keep the vigil. They should go looking for food if mom is dead. Also, if you have anything soft that you could place at the base of the nest to cushion falls, that would be great.
Do you have an approximate age? Could you post a pic?
Right now, keeping him warm in a quiet environment is key. Can you put him in a container, half on, half off of a heating pad set on LOW? Babies can't regulate their temp. Also, do you have any pedialyte? If not I'll post how to essentially make your own. Once hydrated, you'll have to begin feeding if we can't find someone to take them, if you want to given them up. We have a member in Mississauga. I'll PM her.

I assume that you have looked around the area to see if any others are to be found, but please keep doing so, there's almost always more than one or two.

Hi Teeter,
Definitely keep looking for the remaining babies. They WILL get down when they get very hungry. So, it's best if you get to them before a cat does.
For the one you have - plse follow the instructions Farrelli posted.
In the meantime, I WILL try to find some help for you in GTA.
Are you able to drive at all? because depending on where help is available, it might be helpful to drive at least half of the way.
Please keep checking here often.
And keep an eye on your private messages - someone might be contacting you through a pm.:grouphug

The baby is about 5 weeks old. I looked after squirrel "Teeter" last year. He was attacked and died in my backyard in December.
I called my daughter to come home and keep vigil so I can get pedialyte. I have a heating pad, but the hot water bottle was quick, so I could go back outside. I just checked on him. He's rolled up in a tight ball and comfortable enjoying the warmth.
I going to have my daughter record the sound of baby squirrels and/or adult squirrels making their sounds to see if I can get those other babies alert and out of their nest again. We're going to stand at the base of the tree and see what happens. Does that sound like a good idea.
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience with Teeter, but I might need some help.
Thank you.
Going back out till daughter gets home.

You can make your own pedialyte. After 24 hours stop the salt.
ALSO these babies can crawl, so the chances of them being in the nest is slim.
Check all of the branches going up the tree. Even if you have to get a ladder to look, search everywhere on the limbs that you can.
1 tsp salt (teaspoon)
3 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)
1 quart warm water
Keep refrigerated.

While you're out, you should pick up some goat's milk. It's sold at many grocery stores, including Walmart. If you can't get fresh, they often also have canned, next to the evaporated milk.
You will also have to order Fox Valley from one of the places linked to above and get some 1cc and 3cc syringes. Those can be gotten from Shoppers, or someplace like that, though, you should also order some O-ring types when you order the Fox Valley.
Hopefully the squirrel queen of the GTA will respond soon.

GM recipe that farrelli mentioned:
3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt (full fat)
Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.
Do NOT add the heavy cream for 24 hours after starting them on this.

Metro has goat's milk for sure. And Sobey's does, too.
I am sure, Canadian Superstore and Loblaws will do (but personally never bought it there, I used Metro and Sobey's most)

Have been in touch with squirrelfriend. She is going to take this little guy. I'm going to make pedialyte from recipe posted and give him some now.
I'm going to drive him to her tonight whether or not I have the others yet. We'll keep vigil the rest of today and early tomorrow morning and take the others to her as well. I hope they come down soon.
Thank you to everyone.

Gave him pedialyte. He was starving! Once he new what the dropper was, took it greedily. Curled up in a little ball again, nice and warm.
Where are the others, so cold and hungry by now?
I wish they would start squealing again.

At this age, they can travel. Not well, but they can get around, really shakey, and unstable. I doubt that they will just stay near the nest, they will be trying to get down the tree and possibly onto the ground. This is the age that they will walk up to anything looking for help, I have even heard of them approaching dogs looking for safety.
Try looking more than listening. Is there anyway that you can go outside and look around the base of the tree and at the limbs nearest to you.
They have to be hungry so they are looking for mama/food.
This one has his eyes opened, right?

I've looked in the bushes around the area and saw no babies. The squealing was coming from the top of the tree and that's when I saw one halfway down the tree and then saw it go back up. There seemed to be three squirrels squealing - the one on the ground, one climbing the tree and up high in the tree, probably in the nest.
I've been outside watching and waiting and looking. It's getting dusky outside so I'm going to call squirrelfriend soon and be on my way with the little boy.

You mentioned using calls... what sound would you use? I would be afraid of using the wrong sound. I think if they hear mom set off alarm, they are supposed to stay put in nest. I would definately use the baby cry. Thats probably why the second was on his way, but when you quieted the baby on the ground, he went back. I have a feeling you will get them all safe and sound :) Great work!

Ok, I have the first baby. Upon closer inspection he is dehydrated and emaciated. The penis is red due to his siblings looking for anything that resembles a nipple. It's so red that upon first inspection I thought that it was stuck outside the foreskin. It isn't. It's just really red.

I got a great feeling meeting squirrelfriend. I know that the little squirrel is in the best hands possible.
I'm going to be out there at dawn. I'm going to use just the baby squirrel sounds that we recorded on the Blackberry to see if they will come out. It's nice and quiet in the early morning, so the sounds will be more audible.

So glad that things are working out for this one. I feel SO badly for the others - scared, hungry, and dehydrated. I hope that they come down tomorrow. Teeter, can you hang out tomorrow, maybe at a distance, and wait for them to come down? I know it's a lot to ask, but you'll save a lot of suffering and save some lives.
Thanks for all you've done so far.

is there any way to reach that nest?
if they are as emaciated and dehydrated as the little one at SF's, they may have become exhausted and too weakened to squeal anymore:dono :thinking

The tree is about 25 to 30 ft. high, and the nest is near the top. I keep seeing the image of the little grey baby climbing back up to the nest. It looked so tiny in the tree.
I can see the tree from my window, so there's no problem keeping watch.
Would they be more likely to come down if I'm close to the tree, or more at a distance?
This has been such a long cold winter/spring. They'd have a better chance if they could stay warm. Now they're dehydrated, hungry, and cold.
I am hoping for a good ending. Please.

My husband is going to see if he can help.
He's in the construction business. He is going to see if he can get a fork lift truck tomorrow morning and get the squirrels from the nest.
It goes to a height of 35 ft.
Everyone, say a prayer that this will happen and they're still alive.

It proabably is better if you are near the tree. Even if you can see it from your window, it can be on the other side of the tree where you cannot hear it. I really doubt at this age, it would matter if you were close or not. But saying this now, it may actually be better if they think you are there to help. As I have said before little ones are known to crawl right up on people looking for help when they are away from their mom.
What is the sound that you are going to play for them. Listen first thing in the morning, before you play anything. You may hear them. They should start moving around when it starts to get light, which is actually quite early. Hope you are up to this, and thank you! :Love_Icon

So far so good with the little fellow. I was concerned as to whether or not he could pee because his penis is in a little rough shape due to the sibling suckling. The skin is very dry and hard on the end. I was just up to see him a few minutes ago and there was a droplet at the end of the penis so it looks like the pee is able to exit. I was worried that the dry skin had sealed it shut at the end.
I have the sneaking suspicion that he is related to Penelope somehow. He has the same amazing ability to pin himself to anything cloth. That's why we call her Penny Pins. Perhaps his last name is Pins too. :)

I think I have seen where cotton balls soaked with warm water can be applied to the tip of the penis to get the scab to come off. It's imperative that the penis not scab over.
You can also put a little neosporin on it to keep it soft.:thumbsup

Thank you nancy. You answered my next question before I got to ask it. I wasn't sure if neosporin was ok because of the oil base. Thanks. I'll get right on that now. He is still doing well. He's a grunter. If he feels like he isn't getting the desired amount of attention he is not shy to bring on the "eepings".:D
I was happy to hear that teeter's husband might be able to get the use of one of those bucket lift trucks sorry I don't know what the official name for those are. That truck would be ideal for this situation.
Teeter, sorry I never got your real name, I just wanted to let you know that I am awake so feel free to callif you get them. Even though later on in the day I will be sleeping. I will have my phone with me so feel free to call if need be.
So far I think this little guy will be ok. He's gotten stronger already. He just needs to fill out. That will take a few days. I just worry about the others. It's cold out there at night and not exactly toasty during the day either. I sure hope the come down soon so he can be reunited with his sibs again.

Will be here in 10 min. with "Zoom - boom". Will take whole nest if easily removed or put their hands in to remove babies. I reassured these tough burly guys that babies do not bite!
Pray they are still alive.

I know you already know this, but remember to warm the babies slowly before giving anything by mouth....this may take a few hours...but they are safe now so we just need to be a little patient.
Also once you start feeding formula, I would dilute it just a little more than the recommended 1:2 ratio, perhaps do 1:3 for a couple of feedings. You can also hydrate in between feedings too.

Thanks everyone for your speedy responses, advice, encouragement, and prayers. It is indeed a HAPPY ENDING!
The operation went rather smoothly. The workers assessed the situation and then got their equipment. When the worker got up to the nest he put his hand in and said there was nothing there. My heart sank. Everyone on the ground told him to bring the nest down. When he dislodged the nest he thought he could hear something. Hopes went up again.
Once on the ground, as we uncovered all the material used for insulation, there they were. Three little balls of love!

I am so sorry to have to announce that the first guy didn't make it. I woke up for the 8:30 feeding and he was away from the other three. He had passed. At least he was reunited with his family before he went.
He wasn't a very strong eater. I thought it was just because his stomach had shrunk and would increase as time went. I was lucky to get 2 ccs at a feeding. Since he wasn't eating much I tried to feed him more frequently.
The other three started off at a couple of ccs. They are already eating 4-5 cc's per feeding. They are VERY eager eaters!
Break is over. I gotta get back to work. The guys are here with me. They are all snuggled up next to their hot water bottle. Happy and full. Their bellies are already starting to fill in. All four bellies were concaved when I got them. Now they are rounding out.

I am so very sorry to hear this. I know you take the losses so personal. Just remember that he was in loving hands, warm and fed.
You know when they move off of the heat that is not a good sign. He could have fallen onto a branch and had internal injuries, we will just never know.
All I know for sure is that I am happy he was with you and that he got to be with his siblings again.
Had it not been for him coming to look for help, who knows where the others would be.
Thank you for doing everthing possible for this little one. :grouphug :grouphug
Are you feeding the others diluted FV formula, slow and steady, it will take them time to adjust to having full bellies again, and it won't take much. Not sure if you remember Magenta's babies........skin and bones. Just have to go slow and not be too eagar to fatten them up fast. :grouphug I would do diluted formula and hydration in between. Hydration is key.

Yes the formula is diluted a bit and they had pedialyte in the beginning. I will add more pedialyte between feedings. I still can't believe the little guy is gone. Other than not eating much at each feeding he seemed ok. Usually there is hat crash period where you can see them start to go downhill. That didn't happen with his one. This morning he was grunting and squirming around while trying to cuddle next to me. The little guy had a hell of a grip too!
Dehydration is a tricky thing with squirrels. It can really mess up the organs. Especially in the little wee ones.
Thank you nancy for your kind words. You know how hard it is on all of us when we lose a precious little guy.

I must say these three sibs are bouncing back real quick. They are filling out quick. The bellies on these guys were concaved when I got them. They are rounding out now. No bloat just round. They'll be fatties again real soon. Hey Anne, the little girl who we thought might be a runt is the biggest pig of all! What she lacks in open eyes she makes up for in appetite. :D
The grey boy is presently grumbling at penny whenever she runs by their cage. He better get used to it I think penny is OCD. She has a tendency to run in circles due to brain damage. She has gotten a little better over time. Her loops are not as tight any more. As a matter of fact her current trend is a big circle. Under the bed, around the fish tank, passed the foot of the bed then back under it again. She does this same routine over and over for hours. Not to worry. Penny has no aggression what so ever.
I haven't forgotten the pics. I am waiting for my hubby to get off the computer so that I can load them up. In the meanwhile ill take a few more.:tilt

Can't wait for the pictures!
I would stop with the pedialyte and just feed them sugar water in between the feedings.
I always remember that they say, a squirrel can actually go days without food, but they need hydration. Hydration is key, but I know you know that, I am just a worrier....:shakehead :)
Glad they are all doing well. Enjoy those babies, they have tons of people pulling for them, and YOU too. :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug

I'm so sorry the little guy has died. It's heartbreaking to receive news like this.
I know he was in wonderful hands. Maybe the red penis was part of a larger picture. He could have injured the penis on his descent from the trees and was suffering from internal bladder/kidney problems.
Another little angel.
Glad to hear the others are doing so well.

Great pics of the little squirrels.
I am really impressed with the people on this board who stepped up to help these little fellows. You did a great job and should be proud.
If I was in the area, I would definitely buy a round of beers for the workers who took the time to pull them from their nest. :thumbsup
I am sorry to hear about the little male who passed. He was super cute. Maybe the dehydration and cold caused enough systemic organ damage that he could not pull through. At least he was warm, with his family and had something to drink before he passed which certainly warms my heart and gets you plenty of good karma! RIP little fellow. :( Fingers are crossed for the others.

The little babies are adorable!
The grey boy is also a hero. He's the one I saw going back to the nest, so I knew that at least he was still there, maybe another one. But three!
If he had come down and the others stopped squealing, I might have assumed that there were none left up there.

Well, everybody is still doing fine. The grey boy is the eeper that gets my attention if they want it. Even though they get constant attention. I think he is the designated eeper. theyre all quite vocal though. If you put your ear against the container you can hear lots of grunting going on in there amongst all the bedding. I think Penny and Squirrlie are jealous.
We almost got busted at work with them today. My friend was holding the whole wad of them when someone from produce came in and saw the bin with all the bedding in it. She kept asking about it. Meanwhile my friend is holding all of them and they're grunting away while they are jostling for the warmest position. It was like an old comedy us trying to talk over the noise that they are making so she doesn't hear. It worked.

Wendy, several years ago I walked in to the enclosed arena at the barn where I board my horse at the time...and picked up 23 baby barn swallows.:shakehead I was taking them to work in two big plastic buckets from one of the supplements I give my horse, which I kept in a closed cabinet in my desk. I could just lean over and stuff mealworms into them (formula was a little more complicated) all day. By day 3 they had figured out the blackmail that baby birds raised at work all figure out - if they all cheep together you will race in to stuff them with food, even if it seems too soon to feed again, just to shut them up! I recall a very bizarre and LOUD conversation that me and my office mate launched into one day when they were eeping and the boss walked in. We were basically shouting at each other in this tiny office...
I raised those guys to fledging and nobody ever found out!:thumbsup

My god! I went to feed the little guys again. I picked up the Firestone I saw to feed and it was completely limp. I mean completely! If it wasn't warm I would have thought it was dead. I looked and I could see some gentle breathing. After a minute or two she bounced up. She was just very soundly asleep. She nearly gave me a heart attack! I reinflated her Belly with formula and she is now back asleep.
All are doing fine and growing quick. They have gained quite a bit of weight since they have come here. They are all eager eaters. The little girl is the piggiest of them all.:tilt
