Hi everyone,
I found a baby squirrel in the street here in California and cannot find the other babies/mom to put it back with. It has open eyes and fur but tail is not yet bushy, looks about 5-6 weeks.
Does anyone know is FV available in stores or must I order online? Also, does anyone know how fast they ship? I'll give it some pedialyte tonight and get my hands on some goat milk hopefully in the morning to make some temporary formula.
I am leaving the country on Thursday so I need to figure something out- perhaps I can find its family, or maybe there is a rescue near Riverside, CA where I am. My father has offered to take on the caring duties if I cannot find an alternative, but I really hope I can because he works 30 hours a week. Any advice is welcome!!!
I was on here a while ago because I found a baby squirrel in India. I couldn't get Fox Valley there so my little guy was on the temporary formula with added calcium from 4 weeks and then graduated to fruits/veg until I released him at what seemed like a quite happy/healthy/energetic 12 weeks.
In any case, I am not sure how healthy this little guy is so I'm just hoping he makes it through the night.
Thanks Squirrel Board!
Taylor

You can also submit a new thread with your area in the title to alert some people that are close to your situation.
Like "need rehabber in blank, CA" or something like that would get attention.
Let me check my members list..............

Thanks so much!
I'll call the rehabbers first thing in the morning!
In the meantime, I've tried to give the baby pedialyte but he hasn't taken to it.... I'm hoping that's because he is not dehydrated but it could be because he is injured.
I discovered two small areas of blood which I think indicate that the baby was bitten/carried by a cat. The wounds are very small and seem to not have hit anything important- one is a scratch on the chin and the other is on the shoulder- he can move the arm but doesn't seem to want to put much weight on it. He is pretty active though.
If you have any suggestions with with regards to this that would be great.
Thanks again everyone for all the help.

Yes, if it's a cat bite he will need antibiotics as soon as possible.
Do you have any human and/or animal antibiotics in the house right now, or friends or family that may have some.
Ideally you are looking for animal Baytril OR human CIPRO.
Check to see

Should I try a vet in the morning?
He is very active so I would think that the injury is not too bad and/or that he doesn't have an infection... does anyone have experience with this?
I have some human antibiotics (mainly amoxicillin but I can check for others), but I am wary to give them to such a tiny squirrel...

Yes, a vet would be ideal. We can tell you how to dose various antibiotics. The one you have is OK, but the cillin group of antibiotics isn't the best. Cipro or Baytril are the best. If you have them, I could probably tell you how to dose, but if you have to go with amoxicillin, someone will have to help you in the morning. But again ,if a vet is contacted, they can give you Baytril. You have to be cautious with this, cat bites are generally fatal. He might not show anyting now, but that's now. I'm going to bed in 15 if you need anyting else.

Are squirrels legal in CA? If not, come back in the morning and discuss it. In illegal states, vets can seize a squirrel and put it down, so you have to be careful who you trust. If it is illegal, the rehabers should be able to help.

Do contact the resources that IR posted above. They will have the medicines you need to help this little guy. Our veternarians all know of our organization and call us directly or refer the finders to us for help. I'm not sure down in So. Cal. You could call your veterinarians and ask for referrals to Wildlife Rescue Groups they work with. If you don't get help through the ones posted by IR.
Wish I were closer to help you out.
I'm sure you'll find the help you need tomorrow. :)

It isn't legal to have squirrels as pets; however rescuing and obtaining the help they need from a licensed rehabber won't cause you any trouble. :)

Hi, I'm in California as well. What part are you in? I'm San Francisco east bay area (Berkeley). I don't know if there's anything I can do to help? I want to list a couple wildlife rehab places in this part of California:
1.) The Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue (YUWR) and Education Center in Oakland, California http://yuwr.org/ (510) 421-9897 (website says they can only accept baby mammals at the moment) **IR, if you are interested, this part of their website lists some other northern California wildlife rehab centers, in case you could use them for future reference -- http://yuwr.org/emergency/
2.) Lindsay Wildlife Museum (and animal hospital) in Walnut Creek, California. 1931 First Ave, Walnut Creek, CA USA 94597 925-935-1978
P.S. Sorry if I goofed and you are in Southern California, I just wanted to offer any help I could. :)

CSL, I still think you'd make a WONDERFUL rehabber!
You've got everything it takes, just have to find a mentor and get the training!
California Squirrel babies are in bloom! :)

Thanks everyone. He's very perky this morning, managed to have some pedialyte last night.
I'm in Riverside so I'm probably going to give Squirrel Mender in Thousand Oaks a shot if I can manage to get him down there before I leave tomorrow.
Thanks again!

Oh gosh, I hope you are able to get him there. If not, is there someone willing to come and get him from you before you have to leave??
