We have found a baby squirrel in the ceiling. Looking at pictures I'd say he's about4 weeks old? I know nothing about squirrels. I don't want to just let him go outside and not survive, but I cannot care for him. What do I do? I am not sure if the mother will be back.

I live in PA if that helps. Right now he is laying on my chest. His heart was racing earlier but he's calm now.

I would put him in a box and put him back where he was found, for Mother Squirrel to take care of.

If she does not come back for him, and I imagine she will move him after this, then, keep him warm.

He needs special squirrel formula and lots of expensive stuff.

Momma will take him back I bet!!! Let us know if Momma don't take him back,
and we will help with emergency formula recipes and stuff.

Put him back if you can! If not, then put him in a box near where you found him outside if possible where cats can't get to him, leave the lid off box, so Momma squirrel can find him.

Keep us updated! I bet they will reunite fine! Hurry before it gets dark!

Did he fall or did you actually go up in the attic and see him?
Is there a big squirrel hanging around?
I would imagine that there are more up there and perhaps mama too.
I will look for help in your area.

Do you think she will relocate him out of our ceiling? That is where we found him. We've been trying to get them out for a few weeks. I am holding him in a warm rag now and he is sleeping

How exactly did you find him, was he on the ground?
She may relocate him out of the ceiling if she has another nest built, which they usually do. If she does, she may be taking the babies there already.
Do you see any sign of other little ones or of a big one around, are you hearing more noises?

Is there anyway that you can look for more?

There are no other squirrels. I looked up into the area. He has my scent, will his mom take him back still?

Oh yes if she is around, and able she will take him back.
When was the last time you heard any noise besides him squealing?

Baby Squirrel Information

1) Is the baby uninjured? Is mom still around? and if so, warm the baby and place in a safe spot where mom can reunite if possible. Mom will not take a cold baby!
2) Okay, so you couldn’t reunite with mom. Start by warming the baby in a plastic container full of fleece or tee shirt material. (Not towels as the loops catch little claws and can cause injury) Place the container half on a heating pad that is set on low. It needs to be a heating pad that does not have an automatic shut-off. It needs to be half on and half off so that the baby can get off of the heat if it gets too hot.
3) Check to see if the baby is dehydrated. You can do this by gently picking up the skin on the back of the baby’s shoulders. If the skin goes right back down it is not dehydrated. If the skin remains “tented” for a time, you will need to rehydrate with Pedialyte or homemade Pedialyte.

Hydrate them right away (use a 1cc syringe and go slow)........ give some homemade pedialyte every hour for six to eight hours and then you can start start feeding them some formula made from goats milk (if they are thoroughly hydrated).
Pedialyte for no more than 24 hours!!! Too much sodium!!

Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup warm water
1/4 tsp salt (teaspoon)
1 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)

Feed slowly with a 1cc syringe - head UP tail DOWN
Keep warm at all time – If no heating pad available fill bottle with hot water (cover bottle with sock) or fill a sock with dry rice or beans and microwave. Be sure to squish the rice or beans around to be sure there are no hot spots that might burn the babies.

____________
4) Once rehydrated begin to feed Fox Valley formula which can be ordered from http://foxvalleynutrition.com or while waiting for that to arrive use recipe below. As a general rule you will feed 5 - 7% of their body weight per feeding

Homemade Goats Milk Recipe -

1 cup Goats Milk * (if can - dilute)
1/3 cup Full Fat Vanilla Yogurt
1/3 cup Heavy Cream (frig section)

(lasts 72 hours in frig)
5) This information is really just meant to get you through until you can get the baby or babies to an experienced rehabber. If you are here on The Squirrel Board, you have access to all of the information you could ever need about squirrels. Most importantly there is generally someone here who can help to find you someone who can take the babies and prepare them for life in the trees. The trees are where they are meant to be and people here know how to get them safely there!

If you warm the baby up, you MUST do so slowly with a heating pad set on low.

It's been a couple days since we heard noises. We have a live trap up there because we wanted to catch them and relocate them out of the ceiling so we can seal the hole.

If you could put him up there, ideally in a makeshift nest (maybe box with warm bedding), mom may take him. I would move swiftly as it will be dark soon. If she isn;t taken tonight, you should take her back and hydrate her tonight and put her back up right before dawn.

OK so does it appear that the others have left a couple of days ago, and perhaps left this baby?
You never got anything in the live trap did you?

Nope. Never got anything in the trap.

Can you post a picture? Does he look skinny, can you see his ribs?

My roommate does not want to put him back up in the ceiling because he doesn't want it up there anymore. Is there any other way we can reunite them somewhere? He says we can care for it until we fond a solution.

Would he be willing to put it up there for just an hour or so? Just to see if mama comes back? If not then we will gladly give you solutions. I mean we will help you either way, but getting him reunited with his mom is the best possible answer. I have already alerted a couple of members from your state.:thumbsup
Oh if you are able to put him back, just make sure he is in something tall enough where he can't crawl up and out of but mama can get into.

farrelli
04-15-2013, 05:27 PM
No, there is no other way unless you know where the momma lives now. Tell your roommate that he/she is a monster. How could putting a baby back up there for his mom to carry away hurt anyone? If you can't do that, you're going to have to provide formula and such if and until we can find someone to take it. As if your roommate wants to foot the bill for that.

MollyBear361
04-15-2013, 05:34 PM
The VERY BEST solution is to let mama take care of her baby. She will look for it even after you have held it. But if it gets dark, she will not come out and the chances of reuniting will be even less tomorrow morning. The longer you keep her she will not be getting proper food or care or nutrition. Let mom get her and move her out. It is a LOT of work, money, and heartache to try to save the baby on your own. She needs her mommy. ASAP. Please at least see. What can it hurt? By not putting the baby back is not going to stop squirrels from coming in right now so I don't see the point of not trying to get her back with mom.

Did you put him in something where he cannot escape, but the mom can get him out?
If she is not back by dark, I would take him back in with you. We will tell you how to proceed then.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please put the baby back and use a water bottle with warm water next to the baby for warmth. Momma's do not recognize cold babies. It is very common for mothers to nest inside buildings and then move the babies outside at this stage when her nest is built. I bet she already moved the other babies already. Please keep us updated.

You can also make a rice buddy. Take 1 cup of uncooked rice, and put it in a sock, tie it at the top. Place that in the microwave for 1 minute. Take it out and squish it around so there are no hot spots. Place a piece of fleece around it, and place it next to the baby. This should be reheated every hour or so.

kk88tt
04-15-2013, 05:54 PM
He is in a box with a warm cloth in the back of a trap. If the mom goes for him she will be trapped. I will post with what happens.

SammysMom
04-15-2013, 05:57 PM
Why a trap?

kk88tt
04-15-2013, 05:58 PM
So that we can move them out of the ceiling and then seal the hole. It won't kill them or anything.

MollyBear361
04-15-2013, 05:59 PM
:shakehead Most squirrels won't go in a trap. If she DOES go in the trap you are then jeapordizing the rest of her babies that are not going to be fed or protected by her tonight. You don't know where her other nests are, how will you know where to put her and baby? You can't just throw out a squirrel right before dark out in the open for predators to get. What IF her only nest right now is in the ceiling?
This doesn't sound good. I just hope somehow there is a happy ending.

Okay, I am going to weigh in on this one. Didn't she get others out of the ceiling? If she brought them somewhere she will be back to bring this one too. If you put him in a high-sided box with a WARM rice buddy she can get into it to get him out. A cloth is not going to warm him as he does not have his own body heat yet. The warmth needs to come from an outside source.

Milo's Mom should be contacting you, please just hold him or put him in some kind of a container with holes so that the cats cannot get him. Can you put your cats in another room with the door closed, just until you and Milo'sMom figure something out> Give them treats in the room and close the door.

We are home and he is on heat.

Literally just walked in the door.

His finders named him Squishy (from the Finding Nemo movie).

Squishy immediately curled up with Jenna & Emma in their mountain of snuggly fleece.

He got 1cc of hydration fluid so far. Going to feed Jenna & Emma and then get his weight and offer him some diluted FV. He does not appear to be dehydrated at all. I am aging him between 4.5 and 5 weeks old. He has the sleepy open eyes.
