View Full Version : Worms
I'm sorry everyone my eyes are terrible and the pollen is horrible here in FL. I've read as much as I could and from what I gathered Toby made it through this issue I hope I'm right I am a quick skimmer when reading.
I have a squirrel that we saved and released into our backyard, We call her Marty we actually rescued and raised her mother who sadly disappeared while nursing her baby's in a nesting box that I built. So Marty is a second generation release.
My concern is she has what looks more like a string with small pieces of feces/poo spaced about 1/16 apart hanging out of her bottom. She is a released squirrel who visits daily. it does not appear as thick as a roundworm. looks more like a piece of twine it's about 2 inches long.
I recently lost an unreleasable and cannot bare to lose Marty.
Sorry for the long post. I know we all love our squirrels...
What can I do?

HI enzo..you are in an old thread .. I will ask admin to create you a new thread to better the others to see you!
worms, yep, there are so many parasites in florida.. always something!!!
Where are you, I have meds that work in a single dose... very expensive and closing in on their shelf life, hate them to waste, would love to share..biltricide/praziquantal/droncit.. mine is human Rx.
otherwise there are options to treat several type worms... thinking the most common will be tapes...i see them often.
panacur/fenbendazole
Ivermectin does not work on tapes, but I am only guessing tapes from location, species and brief description..
if you know a vet for your sqs or domestics and you may be able to sweet talk them, sqs are legal in florida!
let me get admin to start a new thread...:thumbsup
good luck
Shes about 18 months old.
Thanks Jackie I'm in Fleming Iland just south of Jacksonville.

Marty is adorable and I know you are proud of him. Are you sure its a parasite? Can you get him to come to you? If so you could give it a little tug and most likely it will come on out. You are in the best of hands with Jackie, she knows her squirrels and is a true sport model....Hi Jackie

If you can get close enough to him, grab it and pull it out. As Jackie says, worming is a good idea, but it truly sounds like hair to me. Frankly I pulled one out of my cat recently. YUCK, but easy fix...
Marty says thanks and wants everyone to know she's a Mama Squirrel and that her Mother Sunshine was also saved and raised by us...

I actually did pull one out last week. I'm reasonably certain it is a worm. It did not have much girth but had a texture to it that I believe is that of a worm. My wife is the one responsible for getting me involved and loving these guys. At the time she didn't think it was a concern. I believe otherwise. But I hope you are right but I would like to treat her as I said I just lost a four year old non releasable and it was very difficult for me.
Thanks again to all responses!
