Hello Friends :wave123
I am having troubles understanding the amount of Rehydration fluids giving to squirrels or mammals in the first 24 hours when I receive them.
I like to use Fox Valley Electro Stat a powdered electrolyte formula for oral rehydration.
I have had pretty good luck using this and seems like animals like the flavor.
I use the electrolyte for the first 24 hours then go to a half strength fox valley formula mix for a day then go to full strength if doing well.
I go by the Mammal Baby Rule Guidelines Charts of 5% - 7% of there weight for the amount of formula feedings....This has been working great for the formula.
But when I look at the Charts for Rehydration fluids they are talking about total daily intakes and it seems low and not sure how much to give them at a time or the time frames in between feedings of rehydration fluids.
I took in two 100 gram eyes open fox squirrels yesterday afternoon.
They were dehydrated not to bad...There skin did not tent to long...maybe 6-7% dehydrated.
I gave them the Fox Valley Electro Stat
The Female- Betty .............. .... The Male- Kalona
4-7-13 - 5:30 pm - 5.0cc. .......... 4-7-13 - 5:00 pm - 5.0cc
4-7-13 - 8:30 pm - 6.0cc ........... 4-7-13 - 8:00 pm - 3.0cc
4-7-13 - 11:15 pm - 4.0cc ......... 4-7-13 - 11:00 pm - 2.0cc
.................................................. ...............................
4-8-13 - 7:00 am - 5.0cc ........... 4-8-13 - 6:30 am - died
4-8-13 - 10:00 am - 3.0cc
I left my first 24 hour baby mammal book at home.
I am at work now so going by memory
The Rehydration chart said for 100 gram give 9.0cc total for a day.
The formula feeding chart says for a 100 gram 5.0cc - 7.00cc per feeding
When I first got them I looked at the charts to see how much they can hold with there stomachs and what to go for for Rehydration
I feed them the electrolyte and they both drank it real good 5.0cc no problem.
The next feeding 3 hours later Betty kept wanting more ..so I gave her 6.0cc.
The male Kalona was slow and did not do as well dropped to 3.0cc
The next feeding 2 hours later Betty I gave her 4.0cc.
The male Kalona was slow and did not do as well dropped to 2.0cc
I checked them at 5 am and they seems ok.
I went to feed at 6:30 am this morning and Kalona the male just passed away.
Kind of shocked me and broke my heart..dang thought he was not that bad.
Should have I fed them more around the clock smaller amounts the electrolyte ?
The Rehydration chart the 24 hour goal seems low.
Does anyone have any suggestions or know of better Rehydration charts ?
Thanks :thankyou
