Briana, I got your email. Do they have fur?
We must have a weight in grams to dose the meds...
A scale can be bought for less than twenty dollars at Walmart, CVS, Target etc...
you will also need a 1 cc legible syringe without a needle, ask the pharmacist, they are usually free, get a few please.

Jackie in Tampa
03-14-2013, 03:54 PM
are they on heat? are you supplimenting them with a heating pad?

Is amoxy the only AB you have,, It will work, but there are better sq friendly ABs, amoxy is for respitory, so don't sweat...
you will need a probiotic for the belly ache/GI tract upset the amoxy may give...
Ben bac, acidiopholis or yogurt will work.
trying to let you know so you can get everything needed from Walmart/where ever.

I will post your email here so the other rehabbers can also advise.
what formula are you using?
what are you feding with? a syringe? a pet nurser bottle?

1cc syringes
heating pad
yogurt
scale AND BATTERIES

Hello, I will email a picture of my babies as soon ad I figure out how, I believe they are 2 weeks old, possibly couple days older, cent open their eyes yet. I think my girl (Lana) has pneumonia because she isn't eating as much as she was the night we found her, also she is making weird clicking sounds. We have only had her about 3 days. I have done crazy amount of research about asperation pneumonia and I am very worried. I have amoxicillin but have no idea how.much to give her. I honestly don't know.how much she weighs and I don't know how to weigh her because she is so tiny.

I am using a syringe, and feeding them esbilac and pedialyte (they Love it) they are on a heating pad that is kept on low

03-14-2013, 04:16 PM
Yes amox. Is the only AB I have

Jackie in Tampa
03-14-2013, 04:23 PM
Esbilac is no longer advised for baby sqs... Pet Ag, the manufacturer changed the formulation.. and we have had nothing but problems since...it WAS the frmula of choice for years, we now recommend Fox Valley Day One 32/40 for sqs under 4 weeks...
It can be ordered on line... in the mean time, you can make a substitute formula... let me get a few stickys here wth some infant info.
I hope you are not mixing the pedi with the Esbilac... :shakehead
Also not advised to give pedi for more than 24 hours
Glad you found TSB... we are sq geeks for sure.

Do the babies appear dehydrated? You can do the tent test by gently lifting the skin between their shoulders... if it stays tented they are dehydrated, if it relaxes slow, continue with formula feedings..
let me get some info together while you get a scale... babys qs will go down hill fast...

add to the list Meyerburg Brand Goats milk, canned or refridgerated carton...from the grocery store... $4ish.
go:wave123 we need to get the ABs in her...:Love_Icon

Has anyone given you the recipe for a homemade formula?

Pedialyte is only supposed to be given for 24 hours. It has a lot of salt in it.

I saw that Jackie told you to get some Goat's Milk (the human kind). Did you pick any up?'s

Here is the Goat Milk recipe.

If you do not have these items currently, you need to go get them, TODAY.

Jackie (Jackie in Tampa) has graciously offered her temporary replacement formula recipe.
Jackie's Goat Milk Recipe
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup dannon all natural vanilla yogurt

here's some info about the FV{Fox valley}
it can also be bought at the link Curliesmom gave...:thankyou

In light of the recent problems rehabbers have been experiencing with Esbilac formula, it has been decided that the best alternative is Fox Valley 32/40.

If you call in your order and tell him you need it quickly he'll be happy to oblige. He can ship to you regular post 3-5 days and overnight. He's very nice and very easy to work with.
In the meantime you will need to feed your baby a home-made formula, but please for the sake of the baby, do not feed this for more than 4-7 days. It's a great temporary replacer milk but it lacks certain vitamins and minerals that the babies need to thrive. This recipe will ensure that your baby will be well nourished until your order from Fox Valley arrives.

Jackie (Jackie in Tampa) has graciously offered her temporary replacement formula recipe.
Jackie's Goat Milk Recipe
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup dannon all natural vanilla yogurt

Mix well and keep in a covered plastic or glass container in the refrigerator. Replace after 48 hours.
Please note, this website has several links that still mention Esbilac and we need to keep these links active as they do contain excellent information so please keep in mind that Fox Valley is now the formula of choice for raising baby squirrels.

Goats milk, Meyerburg brand... if in the can, will be next to the sweet condensed milk, evaporated milk... if they have in the carton, next to teh milk and half and half in the refridgerated section.:thumbsup

How often are you feeding them?
You have to feed them in an upright postion, SLOWLY, if not they aspirate and that is what causes pnemonia.
Jackie is emailing you the doseage for the ab.
Double check the syringe link that I gave you to make sure that you give the correct amount, it will only be a drop or two.

You have plenty of time to think about release, don't concern yourself with that for now.
We will help you with that too when the time approches.
You just need to concentrate on the tasks at hand and that is to get these babies fat and healthy.
Just keep in mind... squirrels are wild animals, they are meant to spend their lives as nature intended
free in the trees. Unless there is a reason they can not be released, it's where they belong.
They do wild up as they get older, squirrels can (and often do) bite. I think we have all been bitten a time
or two, we bleed, we survive. They are squirrels! :D

Once you get a chance to read all the stories on here you'll see that there's a very broad range of squirrel behaviors as they get older. Some are sweet as pie and never want to leave home, some are little devils that seem to want to be free from very early on. Some get aggressive during mating season but eventually calm down, some never calm down. Sometimes aggressiveness is caused by environmental factors which you might be able to discover and control, sometimes there's just nothing you can do about it. I encourage you to check out all the stories here and you see all the variety in which squirrel nature comes.
