YES!! Fantastic idea. Please do the switch gradually so as to not upset his belly.

Mix the Esbilac per instructions in a container
Mix the GM formula per instructions in a different container
Then for 24 hours feed 3 parts Esbilac and 1 part GM.
Next 24 hours feed 2 parts Esbilac and 2 parts GM
Then day 3 feed 1 part Esbilac and 3 parts GM
Then on day 4 go to full strength GM.

As soon as possible, order yourself some Fox Valley formula. http://www.henryspets.com/fox-valley-day-one-formula-20-50/

Also get yourself a bag of blocks. http://www.henryspets.com/squirrel-blocks-growth-formula/

The Fox valley and the HHB's (blocks) are the very best thing for your little one...grows them up big and strong and ready for the trees!!

A warm washcloth soaked in diluted Dawn dishwashing liquid will kill the fleas. Wipe him down gently, leave the Dawn on for a few minutes, then wipe him again with a damp washcloth with just warm water. Dry him thoroughly and don't let him get chilled.

You should also really get a scale that weighs in grams....the guidelines for feeding are based upon body weight. (Henry's has them too)

Generally, you feed 5-7% of body weight per feeding...the more he weighs the more you feed.

:Welcome Uncle Steve

If you're suspecting fleas, you can get KITTEN flea powder and sprinkle a small amount in the blankets and bedding you have set up for him.
Don't over do it and do make sure it's specifically for kittens.

Glad you found the board. There is lot's of help for you here. :) :)

YES, I like this idea much better than flea powder! I've only had to use the powder 1x and hated to knowing it's a bit toxic.

Towels will work in a pinch, but since they have loops their little claws often get tangled.

T-shirts, sweatshirts work better and Fleece is the absolute best.

Please make sure the heating pad is set on low and is under 1/2 of the container he is in...this way if he gets too warm he can move away from the heat.

Does he have a stuffy? (little stuffed animal with no hard plastic parts)

You can also make him a rice buddy. Take a tube sock, fill it with rice, tie the top of the sock closed, microwave for 30 seconds or so, smoosh it around to evenly distribute the heat, then give it to him. He'll snuggle up to it like he would to his Mom and/or siblings.

Towels have little loops that their toenails can get caught in and they can injure themselves.

Do you have soft t shirts or fleece?? Put this in a plastic box with a lid with plenty of air holes, and Put the container half on and half off a heating pad on low. That way the baby can move on and off of the warm area to adjust it's body temp.

Edit: The heating pad is on the outside of the container, not the inside.

1cc syringes are better for now....when he gets bigger and is taking 20-30cc's you can jump to a bigger syringe.

They are super cheap....just a few cents each. Nipples are a must, seriously, they are.

1cc's and nipples help tp control the flow of formula, which helps to prevent aspiration pneumonia. If he gets pneumonia you'll need antibiotics, and they can prove very difficult to locate fast. Pneumonia takes them down fast...matter of days and when they crash they crash hard and fast.

1cc's for now, please.

I'd say he's a young 5 weeks from what I've read

How long have his eyes been open?

A 5 - 6 week old Western Gray weighs between 130 and 150 grams, will be furry all over and will be starting to curl his tail and his upper incisors will be coming in.

Since you don't have a scale just yet, they take 6-7.5 cc every 4-4.5 hours; 4 times a day.

You need to reheat the sock. Maybe every hour? Depends. Just check it and heat it back up when cool. If on a heating pad as well, the sock isn't super critical. But if it's the only heat, it MUST be kept warm. They can't regulate their temp at this age.

Steve - as previously stated, the flea powder can be toxic. It can also cause respiratory issues if inhaled. Revolution for Kittens is a better way to go.

Personally, the best thing to get (in my mind), is Ivermectin. Sold as Ivomec at Farm Supply stores. One teeny tiny drop between the shoulder blades and all buggies of all sorts will be dead in about 30 minutes. The same external dose also treats the internal parasites, if any.

Also, I think you said you had a grey....that is not a grey, that is a Fox Squirrel!

:thinking I never fed mine water ...but I'm sure someone with real expertise will be able to let you know for sure:dono if he really went after it I would guess he's still hungry:) But maybe if you know he's gotten the proper nutrition....the water could just satisfy his want for more:dono DON'T do anything until one of the rehabbers addresses it:thumbsup because as you've seen here sometimes little things can have grave consequences :shakehead Need more pics of little Rockie:) :Love_Icon

Basically his tale is a little longer and a little more hair

He's stumbling around trying to get his footing from left to right

He climbs on the Rice sock

His body is a little longer

His belly is full

He eats and then he nests up to the Rice sock

His eyes are open and clear

Thanks for the Reply and the Help

You are like reading haiku!

The water won't hurt - he may be a bit dehydrated still. As long as it doesn't interfere with his eating, if he wants it, I would let him have a bit. Do it in between your feedings instead of right before or after. He is adorable, BTW.

I strongly suggest you do. Once you transition them to FV - then you REALLY start to see growth and good health. It is very reasonable, too. If you buy from Henryspets.com they also have many other supplies - 1 and 3cc feeding quality syringes, nipples, and the Henrys Healthy Bites blocks that you want to provide for when he begins to wean himself.

6 to 7 weeks;
Offer Zupreem primate chow (or if unavailable in your area, use dry Science Diet for Puppies), fruit, and a couple of small slices of avocado in nest box;

Feeding amount: at 5 to 6 weeks, the squirrel's intake will rise beyond the weeks of age guideline; give about 6 to 8 cc's per feeding, or all the baby wants if the stool remains firm.

7 to 9 weeks - formula 3 times a day plus solid food listed above;

Add broccoli stems, green beans and other veggies except corn and sweet potatoes.
Feeding amount: all he wants

9 to 10 weeks - 2 times a day;
Plus food above and now add a small piece of fresh corn and a couple small pieces of sweet potato, other veggies.
Feeding amount: all he wants.

10 to 12 weeks - will reject formula during this period;
Add to food list a couple of almonds or pecans a day, and a small handful of large stripped sunflower seeds.

I am pretty sure this is off Squirreltales (??) - Sarah Rowe's site. She is a very well known and respected squirrel rehabber and helped me IMMENSELY while I raised my boy - what a kind, patient lady she is! He was a teen by the time I found TSB. But the site is qute old and hasn't been updated in some time.

At one point, the only commercially available food that had anywhere near the calcium to phosphorus levels that squirrels need were the Zupreme primate biscuits. But they are FAR from ideal. The Henry's are not only designed specifically for squirrels and have a lot of research behind them - they are also much more palatable so the squirrels will actually eat them.

I would quibble about offering corn and sunflower seeds, too. They are both enormously high in phosphorus which is something you want to avoid, and there is no compelling reason to feed them.

She is absolutely right about allowing them to wean themselves though. We usually suggest putting one HHB in the cage once the eyes open and they will play with it and gum it and pee on it and once day actually CONSUME some of it. Once they are regularly eating the blocks that provide the majority of their nutrients, then you can start giving them various healthy veggies, some fruit, and a treat or two.

Steve - Not sure if anyone asked about this or not, but would you like for us to try to locate a "safe" rehabber for your little one?

It's best if they are raised with buddies (other squirrels)...they sort of teach each other about being a squirrel.

Also, there are many many many costs associated with raising a baby....formula, syringes, nipples, blocks, toys, fleece, fresh veggies, at least 3 if not 4 different size cages, plus a release cage, the list just goes on and on.

I just realized that no one even offered this to you and thought maybe I should.

If you are interested, please let us know what city or county you're located in so we can better target our search.
