View Full Version : Dying baby squirrel - Need help ASAP

Hi all,

We found a squirrel in our fireplace, it must have fallen through the chimney. When we chased the squirrel away we found a small baby squirrel left in the ashes. I assume it had just given birth. This was two days ago. We found a lot of info online and have been doing the following. We kept it warm, fed it puppy formula and water with sugar and salt (1L water, 3tsp sugar, 1tsp salt). It was doing a lot better yesterday and had grown a little bit. It had good bowel movements, first dark and hard than brown greenish and slightly runny. Today he is not doing well and has stopped eating and drinks only very small amounts of water. His skin is turning a bit darker, and is making a clicking sound which started yesterday. He is much less active, and barely moves his limbs as well as breathing slowly.

We think it is a gray squirrel.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We tried getting in touch with any rehabbers in our area and none are available at this time. We live in Toronto, Canada.

THANK YOU ALL

First, the clicking sound is pneumonia. It is VERY deadly. It is IMPERATIVE that you get ahold of antibiotics. Baytril is commonly prescribed for pets. Cipro is commonly prescribed for humans, especially women for UTIs. If you have neither, please call around to find someone who has them or another, less optimal antibiotic. The pneumonia was probably a result of the baby aspirating on formula. It should be fed SLOWLY though a 1cc syringe. How have you been feeding it?

Warmth is the most important thing at the moment. Is he on a heating pad?
Baby Squirrel Information

1) Is the baby uninjured? Is mom still around? and if so, warm the baby and place in a safe spot where mom can reunite if possible. Mom will not take a cold baby!
2) Okay, so you couldn’t reunite with mom. Start by warming the baby in a plastic container full of fleece or tee shirt material. (Not towels as the loops catch little claws and can cause injury) Place the container half on a heating pad that is set on low. It needs to be a heating pad that does not have an automatic shut-off. It needs to be half on and half off so that the baby can get off of the heat if it gets too hot.
3) Check to see if the baby is dehydrated. You can do this by gently picking up the skin on the back of the baby’s shoulders. If the skin goes right back down it is not dehydrated. If the skin remains “tented” for a time, you will need to rehydrate with Pedialyte or homemade Pedialyte.

Hydrate them right away (use a 1cc syringe and go slow)........ give some homemade pedialyte every hour for six to eight hours and then you can start start feeding them some formula made from goats milk (if they are thoroughly hydrated).
Pedialyte for no more than 24 hours!!! Too much sodium!!

Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup warm water
1/4 tsp salt (teaspoon)
1 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)

Feed slowly with a 1cc syringe - head UP tail DOWN
Keep warm at all time – If no heating pad available fill bottle with hot water (cover bottle with sock) or fill a sock with dry rice or beans and microwave. Be sure to squish the rice or beans around to be sure there are no hot spots that might burn the babies.

____________
4) Once rehydrated begin to feed Fox Valley formula which can be ordered from http://foxvalleynutrition.com or while waiting for that to arrive use recipe below. As a general rule you will feed 5 - 7% of their body weight per feeding

Homemade Goats Milk Recipe -

1 cup Goats Milk * (if can - dilute)
1/3 cup Full Fat Vanilla Yogurt
1/3 cup Heavy Cream (frig section)

(lasts 72 hours in frig)
5) This information is really just meant to get you through until you can get the baby or babies to an experienced rehabber. If you are here on The Squirrel Board, you have access to all of the information you could ever need about squirrels. Most importantly there is generally someone here who can help to find you someone who can take the babies and prepare them for life in the trees. The trees are where they are meant to be and people here know how to get them safely there!

DO NOT FEED THE SQUIRREL ANYTHING!!!

That baby is bloated and is turning purple because it cannot breathe!

He looks bloated to me. Hopefully we get some experienced help soon.

No more feeding of anything by mouth this baby is terribly bloated. You need to get this bloat down it will kill him!
Rub the tummy and keep stimulating him to go potty. Take a damp cotton ball and rub the genitals and the anal area.
If that doesn't work you have to give him infant gas x or simethecone.
Do you have him on a heating pad, set on low and only under half of his container.
REMEMBER NOTHING BY MOUTH UNTIL YOU GET THAT BLOAT DOWN.
I AM LOOKING FOR HELP NOW. OTHERS WILL HELP YOU WITH THE BASICS.

When is the last time the baby went poop?

victor2013
03-12-2013, 08:05 PM
Started with a 5cc syringe but since last night we managed to get a hold of a 1cc and that's what we've been using. The antibiotics we have right now is one that contains amoxicillin and clavulanic acid and another one that's penicillin based. Do you know if these are okay to use and any ideas on dosage and feeding method?

Thank you for the quick reply!

farrelli
03-12-2013, 08:07 PM
Keep him very warm and take care of the bloating mentioned already, they'll help you though that. Also, stop with the salt. Hydration is key, but pedialyte and other salted hydration liquids should only be given for the fist 24 hours. The baby will have to be warm and hydrated before nutrition will be absorbed properly.

When you dos start feeding again, puppy formula is also bad. You will need to order Fox Valley (http://www.foxvalleynutrition.com/product-lines/milkreplacers/day-one-2050/) formula, but until you can get it, you will need to switch to a goat's milk formula for the time being. Please see link below:

I think that you will have to submerge his lower half in warm water and gently massage his belly and sides but we'll wait for someone more experienced with babies having problems. Do you have or could you quickly get the baby gas drops mentioned?

Yes this is the correct method, just make sure you dry him off really well, and perhaps but him next to a rice buddy after the "bath".
Get a sock and put one cup of uncooked rice in it, tie it at the top.
Place it in the microwave for one minute. Take it out and squish it around so there are no hot spots.
Wrap it in a piece of fleece and place the baby nest to that. We do NOT want him to get a chill.

Milo's Mom
03-12-2013, 08:18 PM
Victor, you said that you were keeping the baby warm. Does this mean you have the baby's container on a heating pad set on low?

victor2013

We got the drops and are trying the warm bath now. How long should we do the bath?

victor2013
03-12-2013, 08:20 PM
Keeping it warm by keeping the container on a ziploc bag with warm water

Milo's Mom
03-12-2013, 08:24 PM
It is EXTREMELY important that the baby stays warm...very warm! Put the fleece/blankets in the dryer and warm them up, then after the bath, dry the baby off very well and wrap in the warmed fleece.

Nancy in New York
03-12-2013, 08:25 PM
Do you mean that you are keeping the container warm by putting it on a zip lock bag of warm water?

Please make the rice buddy. Do you have a heating pad? Can you get one, preferably one that does not have an auto shut off.

skippy
03-12-2013, 08:31 PM
:Welcome

Not sure if you are actively using your fireplace, but that Momma may have her nest in there with more than just the one you have now.

You're going to need to get a heating pad that doesn't turn off automatically. Babies are kept in their containers with the pad set on low under the container with lots of soft fleece, baby blankets, flannel.

Sending good thoughts your way.

SammysMom
03-12-2013, 08:32 PM
The trouble with a bag of water is that as it cools water actually draws the heat from around itself so it is counterproductive in this situation. If you don't have rice dried beans work too. Is it possible for you to buy or borrow a heating pad? Seriously that is what you need.

Hello All,
We want to thank all of you for helping us help this little baby. It is now in the hands of an expert, a lovely lady who is doing everything she can to help baby Victoria. Yes she told us the baby is a girl, and the name Viktor was actually the name of the baby. we just didn't think it was time to explain ourselves. We are very happy that we found someone who knows exactly what they are doing, but we are also very sad to have parted with Victoria. It is remarkable how attached one can get with a pet in such short period of time. To all of those who are concerned, Victoria was actually better off that what we thought. However, she is still very weak and so little that she really needs dedicated person beside her. If it wasn't for all of you we wouldn't have been able to do anything more for her, and we would have probably lost her soon. We are very happy and grateful to have found you. This experience has changed the way we think of other people. Never in a million years could we imagine such a wonderful and interactive group of people, spare their personal time to help one another in need.
Thank you all once again, and a very special thanks to Squirrel Friend and Astra!

I am devastated. I am so sorry to report that she passed. I had a bad feeling. I went to check on her and she was already gone.

I am jus curious, see her pic posted in the beginning of the thread, she always held her body very straight, legs straight down. Same with the arms. Does this mean anything? I've never seen one do this. If I move the limbs they go right back to where they were after. She had bruising on both feet and one hand. Also on top of head and around eyes. No cuts.

I feel horrible. There was no aspiration. Though at 2:00 am when I came to feed her she did look like she had sneezed out some green snot. It was stuck on the side of the nose. She did not click however.

Sorry Andrea. I tried my best for her. Do keep an eye out for more in your fireplace. Where there's one there is usually more.

Sorry guys. I'm totally crying right now.

squirrelfriend
03-13-2013, 04:25 AM
Sorry, just a question for any rehabbers out there. The bruising on both feet and one hand plus around the eyes and top of head, could that be blood pooling because things were shutting down? She wasn't gasping and there was no discoloration on her left hand. I'm baffled at her sudden demise. She didn't aspirate but when I came up at 2:00 to feed her there was some green snot by her nose. I cleaned it off. There was no sneezing. I figure of I couldn't save her at least I can learn something by it.

In case people are wondering about the time discrepancy. The squirrel board seems to be on a different time zone than I am. My posts show that they were posted a couple of hours before I did.

I thought her posture was "off" too. Almost looked like seizing, maybe? Was the green snot maybe from inhaling soot from the fireplace?

I didn't notice any seizing though the posture does look that was. She just held her body that way all the time. She had mobility of the limbs, would move them a bit but whenshe was done moving them they went right back to that position. Strange. The snot was regular old booger green. Not black. I don't know if that means anything as to wether she inhaled ash. As soon as Andrea told me she was found in the ashes I was concerned as to whether she had inhaled any. I did not hear any breathing problems. BeIng that ashes contain lye I can imagine it would be toxic.

Very often when body/organs shut down the pyloric valve is open
causing bile to flow into the stomach from the duodenum. It can rise and
exit out of the mouth and nose unless suctioned which is what hospitals and
nursing homes do for dying patents. I have witnessed this in humans as well
as some animals and wonder if this is not what you were seeing??

We are devastated to hear that Victoria passed away. May she Rest In Peace. At least we have the comfort of knowing that we all did everything we could for her.

I want to help you figure out what happened so that we could possibly help other little babies in the future. Before I go on to explain everything, I want you to know that we have checked the fireplace over and over, but no other baby was found. We even checked around our house in case the squirrel had other ones outside, but we couldn't spot anything.

When we found Victoria she was all covered in ashes, she was ice cold and barely moving.. we thought she is dead. Then we picked her up, warmed her up, cleaned her up, and when we realized that she is alive we started re-hydrating her. This was all happening late Sunday night. She was purple when we found her, I will try to post pictures. We took care of her all night and she was getting significantly better. No bowl movements overnight.

On Monday I went to the store and bought puppy formula and got a 1cc syringe. While keeping her always warm, fed her every 2 hours, she was improving like a champ! Became pink, just the head was staying a little purple. She was now moving on her own, and able to get her self from the warm side of the box to the not warm side of the box at her own free will. This is the first time when I realized that she would mostly move around with her right hand and leg, while both left hand and leg she was keeping straight. This made her flip around all the time, and it was quite funny at the time. We didn't realize it might be a sign of something very bad. By now she never curled in a ball, rather she was laying fully straight ) either on her back or stomach, mostly on the warm side of the box, and she liked to hide her head under the fake fur we had given her.
While stimulating her to pee, she finally pooped. Her poo was slightly runny and green. Her pee was clear in color, and by now she was peeing a lot. We kept with the feeding every 2 hours, but as we reached nighttime she didn't want to eat anymore. Throughout the night she barely ate. So I started at least giving her a drop or two of water. It was now that she started making the clicking sound. The sound was very faint and you could only hear it if you put her against your ear.

On Tuesday she was doing OK (not as well as Monday), but still slightly active and somewhat eating. As time was passing she was getting less and less active. Around 6pm she started turning purple again, and barely moving. We realized that this is not good and that she really needs professional help. She was getting weaker and weaker by the hour. She wasn't moving on her own around the box. This is when we tried reaching out to different people so they could try and help her. She didn't poo, just a little pee. After many hopeless phone calls we found you, and SquirrelFriend :Love_Icon . We were doing everything as per the instructions on teh forum but we knew we are not as trained, as experienced, as equipped, and able to help her. We were in fact getting ready to drive her to Guelph where we were told someone could help (which is rather far from were we were, and thank God we found someone closer). With in half an hour we rushed her to SquirrelFriend (Lovely lady who really knows what she is doing, and I am very glad she took the time to hep this little baby. I can't thank you enough!). I am 100% sure that she did everything she could. I was very happy that she thought the baby looks better than what she thought. It gave me some peace of mind that we treated her right.

I was eager to hear what happened to little baby Victoria. I am sooooo very sorry she passed, and my eyes constantly tear up as I think of her and as i type this. This entire experience has shown me that there is still goodness in people, and that people care. I know that I have definitely learned a lot though all of this, and i am eager to help many more little babies, and take them from the hands of those who couldn't care less. I am eager to learn more about the care of baby squirrels. I have always admired them in parks, I have always been feeding them in my backyard, but this was something different.

May baby Victoria rest in peace, and may her story educate us for a better care of other little babies.

:( So sad, I am so sorry to hear this. It's very difficult to read posts like these, I don't know how you all do it, staying on top of these threads watching for those in need of help, like working in the emergency room, the concerns, worries and stress of fighting so hard to help these babies recover. I commend all of you whose mission is to save these sweet babies.

You are what we should all strive to be. A decent human being who recognizes their own frailties. Most importantly, a person who wants to learn! God bless...:Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

Having no idea how long she had been in that condition from looking at the (purple) pictures
I'm really surprised she made it as far as she did! Although blood flow was restored, there
had to have been some major organ damage with the proability of neuro damage as well.

She rests in Creator's arms now... :grouphug

How sad.

I have no experience with baby squirrels but that purple color can indicate lack of oxygen which probably would have resulted in organ damage. Poor little thing, at least she had some friends in this world.
