For Iwonka:
Finder found a squirrel who was stuck in chimney for at least 5 days or 6 (heard noise just before he left house). When he returned found female adult inside house, laying down & not moving. Picked up with his own hands.
Iwonka went there, tried to rehydrate, but poor thing so weak she cannot even swallow. Will Sub-Q but she only did for babies. What quantity must she use for an adult?

If she has the WMB book it will say what quantity in there. I will find the pages.
It starts on page 57 according to weight and degree of dehydration.
Do you need me to scan these in and send them in a pm?

I was given this info once as a guide for adult squirrels.
From Erica Miller DVM at the 2004 NYSWRC Conference
The Shortcut Method For Figuring Replacement Fluids
These amounts should be given in addition to maintenance fluids.
Day 1: 3.3% of the animals initial body weight, three times during the first 24 hours.
Day 2 and 3: Give 2.5% three times a day, for the next 2-3 days.
Day 3 and 4: The animal should be rehydreated. It there is ongoing fluid loss (vomiting, diarrhea) additional fluids may be given.

That is the shortcut method from WMB. It says that should be along with maint. fluids. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

I am curious, Nancy if we can apply the baby mammal stuff to adults.
I really like that chart better but assumed since it was for babies I should not apply it to an adult.
Your thoughts? :dono

:grouphug Sending prayers for this poor squirrel and iwonka.
With adults the one good thing is there are more places to insert fluids,
since they have larger areas, so you can distribute them.

Yes, the weights in the book go up to 1000 grams.
I think you will notice that a lot of the topics go from baby, up, but can also be applied to adults since the weights go up quite high.
Same thing with the drug doseages, they go by weight in the book and most go up to 1000 grams.:thumbsup

Sadly, the poor little one died. Iwonka stayed with her, Sub-Q'd and later, about an hour ago, the poor litttle one did drink - only 4cc but she did swallow... but then, she passed away quietly around 2:15am. :Cry
I don't know how you can do it, Iwonka... getting your heart broken like this each time one doesn't make it... and still you always do help them. :sad
R.I.P. sweet one. Go with the angels, surrounded with love.

Aww...so sorry. I believe that sometimes these injuried ones come to us to love briefly and help them cross over to the rainbow in Heaven.
Still hurts the heart, :Love_Icon but knowing she was warm, loved, and not alone helps a tiny bit, yes? Peace little darling.

Poor sweetie. She did get a last taste of water before she left--something to sooth her poor parched little throat so she could shout for joy when she saw her friends gone before. Run free baby girl. Thank you for easing her passage iwonka. You've earned your sainthood suspenders again.
