About two weeks ago I saw blood drops all around the ground in my back yard. I at first thought a hawk might have got a bird or something( we have a hawk that flies around here at times). Well today I think I found out what is happening. I heard all this rucus on my back porch. Well I go out and look and there is blood on my porch and on the ground again. The squirrels are fighting!!! I do NOT like that at all. Why are they fighting? Is it over the food, because I mean we put enough out for everyone. Or is it because it is mateing season? I mean some of them like to sit on our porch and eat and for the most part, they are ok. They do chase each other away sometimes though. But this seems like it was a out and out fight between two squirrels.
What can I do to stop this?? I mean again, I did not get a look at the one who was hurt. By the time I went out there the fight was over and I could not see who the bleeding was coming from( maybe he ran off). This is concerning. I dont want any of them hurt,I mean especially if they are fighting over food or territory. Any sugestions or advice??

It's just nature working on the next generation. They have to work it out among themselves.:shakehead

Geez, I feel so responsible though. I mean we are drawing all these squirrels here by feeding them. Do you think that is why they are fighting? I dont want them to fight. I mean there was quite a bit of blood splats on the porch and the ground! I feel so bad about it..

It's just the way they operate. They'd be fighting over acorns somewhere else if you weren't feeding them.:sanp3

food, mating seaon, combo of both..... Put an extra feeder box out so they can keep a fair distance from each other. Thats about all you can do. I hope it wasnt your little handicapped squirrel!

No it was not my wobbly one. He has not been around today yet. He wont go near all the squirrels usually. He kind of stays back. I usually see him and run out there and feed him one on one. I will toss some nuts for the others in the other direction while I am feeding my Dizzy( that is the name I gave him).
Yeah, believe me I have put out enough food. I went out there after the one fight and as I was laying some nuts down, I saw the bully squirrel! I gave him a nut and I threw a nut to another little guy and the bully jumped on the other one and started wrestling with him!! It was terrible. I scolded him but I dont think he really cared:nono
I am keeping a watch. I mean this bully one had nuts, he just did not want anyone else to have any I think! Geez, what to do..

This is true. We all know that nature is not always kind. At least if one of them gets seriously hurt you'll be there to help.

I spread out where I feed my squirrels this time of year. I have a few feeding stations and around each I put some hazelnuts in the feeder and scatter some around the area so that the less dominant squirrels can do a snatch and grab for breakfast.
