Hello,
I've posted here before with some questions but never introduced myself.
I recently moved to Montgomery County, PAfrom Lower Bucks County, PA. I love all animals but have never been anywhere where squirrels were able to come so close to the house. I live in a townhouse in a condo association with woods and a creek and plenty of trees. I work from home so I get to watch them all day :)
How my love for the little plumpers evolved:
Early October I noticed a blind young squirrel and I started paying attention to her and put water and seeds out for her. There were about 5 squirrels sharing a nest with her.
Late November she was eaten by a hawk right in her nest. ( I know because you could see her remains from the ground) The other squirrels spent the next few days rebuilding the nest, and it was huge. Late December after a night of a bad wind storm, I saw that the nest was gone, blown down in the storm. 2 of the squirrels were just sitting in the branches) the next day, my association hired landscapers to take down diseased trees. They listed about 20 trees.
Seeing what these poor squirrels have to deal with I started ordering HHB's even though you are not supposed to feed them. I figured with the storm and loss of trees, some of them lost shelter and food supplies. I hope the blocks can keep them healthy so they can outrun the hawks that hunt them about twice a week.
I can only recognize certain squirrels by the traits they have (injuries, darker face, stubby tail, etc). I have many photos of them, depending of what's closest to me, I'll shoot with my cell, an SLR or my little Canon.
Here's a few, the first is a typical view if I'm working and they see me. The other is little stumpy, she is a mean one though and will attack anything that is around her.
