Sweet Simon's Mommy
02-04-2013, 08:57 PM
I found her tonight on the bottom of the cage, smells bad, wet from her belly button down, black mixed in with sticky junk in the wet. She drank a lot of water for me.
Washed her off with warm wash cloth and baby soap. Movement is normal, won't eat. Not even a nut . She was fine this afternoon .
any ideas?

Specifically what has she eaten today, has she had access to any plants or anything else that she might have eaten or chewed?
Sweet Simon's Mommy
02-04-2013, 09:22 PM
One Blueberry, 3 snap peas, Romain, red leaf lettuce, HHR and an almond.
No nothing different, she wasn't out today, I had the baby all day.
There is a piece of wood but it has been in there over a week and Finn has one too and he is fine.

Any possibility she is in heat?
SammysMom

Possible insect reaction? Do you see any spot that might be a bite?
Pushing fluids is usually the best plan. I am no expert though. I PM'd some of the more experienced rehabbers. I am sure you will hear from someone soon. :Love_Icon Peaches:Love_Icon

could be in heat, dont know what that is supposed to look like.
should discharge be red not black?

Is she alert and bright-eyed or acting lethargic?

When you cleaned her off, was the "black" truly black, or brown or red? Dried blood can look black, which "might" be she's in heat or might be blood in her urine (UTI, maybe?) If you have Baytril it couldn't hurt to start her on it. Keep offering her fluids so whatever it is passes thru quickly. How is she right now? Warm to the touch, cool, anything unusual?
Sweet Simon's Mommy
02-04-2013, 09:48 PM
Black, no red or brown, seems quieter than usual, drinking more than usual, have SMZ no batril. Simon had UTI all the time, this smells different.
Just pulled her out again and she feels cold to the touch, going to put her in a tub with a heating pad under it for to night.

Is what you're smelling diarrhea?
Are you sure that she didn't vomit? You said wet from the belly button down, is it just on the front of her or on the back too? Anything in the cage that looks suspicious, in her cube? Check all of the blankets too, check for old stash.
Sweet Simon's Mommy
02-04-2013, 10:35 PM
no diarrhea, just wet bottom, some thick clear stuff some black stuff.
No bugs, no bug bites, only bottled water changed every day, this is Florida stuff goes bad fast here so cage fleece is changed and cleaned daily.
She does not like being in this tub, wont settle down......
she wants out so I am going to clean her cage and put her back in.

I realize you've cleaned it all up, but is there anyway you can post a pic?
How is she acting now?
Do her feet feel extra warm or cool?
Have you seen anymore of the clear or black stuff?
Sweet Simon's Mommy
02-04-2013, 10:59 PM
Picture didnt come out, feet and ears are cold.
She is still in the tub, went into her bed with heating pad under it. she seems better without a blanket over it so she can see me. She peaks out every now and then to see if I am still here.
She is grooming herself, so that is a good sign.

My heart is praying for peaches.
I know that squirrels are not humans but in humans blood in the intestinal tract comes out black and almost like tar. Has she had any belly injuries or has she maybe digested something that could have punctured her intestines?
Also with human who have intestinal bleeds the person will become cold, lethargic, and even dizzy or will pass out because of the major loss of blood. BLACK BLOOD is the only thing that comes out so people can't diagnosis themselves because everyone thinks that blood is supposed to be red or brown.
I would give her baby iron. Keep her on a heating pad and not leave her sight.
I hope your Peaches will be okay. Please let us know. If she is loosing blood please try to give her some iron. Anemia is a killer. Her bleeding, if it is that, may stop on it's own but her iron needs to be replaced.
I am not a vet but my father went through this same thing. Black tar like stinky stool. He became very tired then passed out. He was otherwise healthy but foolish. He was having black stools and didn't tell anyone until it was too late.
I am fortunate enough to say that he is as healthy as ever now because my wonderful mom took action and got him to a hospital.
Good luck Peaches. :grouphug

Is that rawhide in the cage with her? Rawhide is infamous for causing intestinal and bronchial bleeding in dogs. The plastic like bits they chew off are splintery and very sharp.Small pieces will still be sharp and splintery too and can cause a lot of damage to the soft tissues inside the body.

I am sorry your Dad went thro that but happy he is ok now.
Yes blood can look black, I cant find any black poop, I will be checking in the morning, she keeps looking at me like "Why am I in here? it is warm and nice but just not the same as my bed"
Sweet Simon's Mommy

Raw hide :thinking don't know where you see that, don't give that to my dogs must less the squirrels, only thing in there is fleece and squirrel

I wouldn't look for black normal poop. A bleed would not look like normal poop. It would be more like a bleed.
Do you think this came from her back end or her vagina?
Pennyorf
02-04-2013, 11:35 PM
As for the rawhide. In her tub in front of her zebra bed is a long brown thing that resembles rawhide. What is that?

Geez when Pennyorf mentioned tummy injuries, I took a better look a the pictures.
The first arrow, is there discoloration there, almost a cream color?
The next arrow, is that bruising?
The circled area is that off color, or the fur?
Sorry to appear that I am picking Peaches apart, just want to cover all bases. I know that all squirrels tummies are not pure white. So this may all be just her fur......:dono

I see what you mean, I think it is a piece of brown fleece with a piece of blue on the top, that makes it look like a raw hide stick.:)

From her pic she looks pretty normal to me. But it is hard to tell from a picture. Good news is that her feet are still pink. Anemic animals gums and pink places will become very pale. Check her gums if you can.

She has a golden vest like pattern on her chest, that is normal, her tummy darkness is fur, her very bottom and girly parts have some of the black on her that I am talking about. Wish my camera was on the setting I had last year when she was a baby, got great close ups then, now I cant. still trying.

If she were bleeding internally .....would it smell
farrelli
02-05-2013, 12:37 AM
In humans, generally, yes, blood in the stool would smell bad. Does it? It would also often be accompanied by abdominal pain. Is she tender?
Also, blueberries, black licorice, Pepto Bismol, iron, and lead are among some things which can cause stool to appear to be bloody but really aren't. Has she had any of these things?
Btw, I love Peaches! :Love_Icon

she gets 1 blueberry a day but she has never had this. Yes she smells bad, but not like UTI.
She was wet like she was sitting in a puddle, just on her under belly like she peed on her belly, some was thick and sticky with some black, dont know where the black came from, bowel or pee. No swelling on her girly parts.
I just don't get this, I know about this stuff usually, this has me baffled.
Should I give her some SMZ
farrelli
02-05-2013, 12:50 AM
Maybe it was just a spot of bad diarrhea. Other than not eating, is she lethargic or acting weird? Are her gums and pink parts still pink? If it was blood in the stool, that's usually caused by a bleed higher up in the GI tract. Does her poo have any metallic smell to it?
If htis doesn't pass by tomorrow, I'm wondering if you should use some ABs.
Sweet Simon's Mommy

She seems to be a healthy pink. She lets me do anything I want to her usually and is being very cooperative tonight, didnt like the wash cloth, but other than that she is really enjoying me holding and petting her, a little more than usual.
She doesnt want to play, just cuddle. But at the same time seems a little skid-dish , more afraid of my hand movements, where normally she doesnt flinch.
I have poked around her under belly and she shows no sign of discomfort.

02-05-2013, 01:09 AM
Well, I'm hoping that it was just a brief spell. Do keep an eye on her pinkness or if she gets lethargic. Let us know if more black stuff is expelled. I'm really hoping that this is nothing. Peaches is awesome.
Pennyorf
02-05-2013, 01:48 AM
I would also put her on a very digestive friendly diet. Nothing hard until you are comfortable with her health and activity. Try bland foods. Nothing acidic like fruit and you might want to see if she will take a tums. Good for the belly and a great source of calcium. But you know that already.

She was dry and happy to get out of your tub this AM Miss Jackie. Did keep her nice and warm tho:thumbsup
She seems fine today...and her bedding from last night is not smelly. Will be watching her.

You are an awesome squammy. I think we all freak out when it is "our own" loved one who needs help. That is one of the most beautiful things about TSB. There is usually someone nearby to talk us through the problem. It's a knowledgeable safety net!
