I found this site after a lengthy search for information on the Southern Flying Squirrel. There seem to be many who can give me advice. You see a few days ago my dad heard some rustling outside. It turned out that the stray cat DC (our nickname for him) had caught something and was carrying it around in his mouth. The brown ball of fur got away but was immediately trapped again, my dad managed to save it. Turned out to be a flying squirrel.

She doesn't look full grown, but she isn't a baby either. She's been eating the nuts and fruits we've been giving her. She wasn't hurt in the attack (lucky little thing), but now we aren't exactly sure what to do with her. Any advice would be helpful.

Oh, I'm in the Florida area if that helps.

Oh dear...cat caught means antibiotics. Cat saliva is deadly to these little guys. I am going to try to find someone who can help. Where in Florida are you?

Yes, even if you can't see an injury, the smallest puncture from a nail or tooth can lead to an infection for them. If you can let us know what are you are in we can help with getting antibiotics. :thumbsup

I'm in Tampa, she seemed just fine a few days ago. She was eating well and moving around the box we put her in. But today she seemed sluggish I think she was sleeping a lot and hasn't really eaten any of the fruit I put in.

Are you providing a dish of water too?
They are nocturnal so it is ok if she is sleeping during the day.
We have members in the area so please keep checking back.
If you can email me your phone number I will pass it on for contact.

My email is djarenspace9 @ gmail.com

MadAlice

I provided a shallow dish of water yes, and I know she's nocturnal but every time I would put some food in she would eat some of it at least. Today though she barely nibbled.

When are they most active? I figured she would be moving around by now.

I am about 35 minutes north off the Suncoast Parkway, depending on where you are, and I have antibiotics and two others flyers that I plan to release in a couple of months but there may be someone closer?

MadAlice
01-28-2013, 09:53 PM
I know it seems very implausible but I kind of want to keep her. I'll never know if I don't ask. Is that at all possible? I know its probably not and I only want whats best for her. But there's no harm in asking.

SammysMom

I understand your desire:Love_Icon , but they are very delicate and she really needs antibiotics. It is also better for them to be with other flyers if possible as they are colony dwellers.

MadAlice
01-28-2013, 10:04 PM
I heard it is possible to keep them as pets as long as you give them a lot of TLC but that might work best with a young flyer born in captivity.. not one born in the wild.

SammysMom
01-28-2013, 10:10 PM
The cat is the real issue here. They can go downhill fast!:shakehead

MadAlice
01-28-2013, 10:14 PM
Yes, yes that's true she didn't look hurt, she wasn't bleeding any.. but that doesn't mean she didn't get a cut or something. Where do I take her?

01-28-2013, 10:24 PM
Hey MadAlice, yes, they are kept as pets. Your kid was wild and will have those instincts. They will live 10 yrs in captivity, are in for that? They have certain dietary needs, protein, calcium, veggies. You must flyer proof your room, they can get in any 1/2" opening. They are very social and like to have another with them, they can get depressed. There is a certain emergency vet you can go to in the Ehrlich area, they do wildlife and she will be taken care of very well...no cost to you. You drop her off and they will take care of her or I can meet you and take her or you can take her to this vet and they can check her out, you pay and take her home??? I can get their address for you? Yes I have antibiotics and have delt with cat caught flyers and greys, it is up to you.

MadAlice
01-28-2013, 10:33 PM
I read up on some of that and learned the basic facts. I looked through some of the threads and learned a bit about their diet. But since we found her I've been thinking. Even if I can't keep her I do want one. I know it's a lot of work and I'm willing to do that.

I do want to keep her yes but the most important thing is to get her healthy. Like everyone else said the whole antibiotics deal. I'm sure she'll be okay until morning.

Quick Question:
How can we tell if she's sick?

crazy4squirrels
01-28-2013, 10:42 PM
OK, you need to get her on antibiotics now, you do not want to wait till she shows she is sick because the next thing she will be is dead. Do you want the number of the vet clinic?? They do all kinds of wildlife. DO NOT WAIT. If you're in you're in. They are very very fast and they can jump like nobodys business. If she gets off of you, don't just step around or kneel down you can step on or land on them and game over. Read Read Read on these babies. She was wild and has now been taken from her home and not by her choice. If you want to keep her she must be healthy first.

Quick Question:
How can we tell if she's sick?
Infection can have a lot of symptoms and sometimes they don't show til too late.
That is why the protocol for a "cat caught" squirrel is always to treat with AB's no matter what.
We don't wait to see a symtpom.

General symptoms of a sick animal would be lethargy and lack of appetite,
which is why I know you are concerned and why we are too.

Sorry if we seem pushy, but we have been down this road many times,
and the outcome can be very sad.

She's plenty warm from what I can see, she has a little nesting area to crawl into inside the box.

(813)265-4043 Tampa Bay Veterinary emergency, get treated and keep or they will treat and give to a rehabber to finish treatment and release back into the wild. Thank you for caring so very much:) She is a pretty little thing:Love_Icon You are right she is not a baby baby and that is why we worry about some inactivity, but again she is in a strange environment but big thing is when you hear cat the red flags fly!

She can't we made sure of that, she hasn't even tried to chew her way out.

Put a heating pad under several layers of towels only cover half of bottom of box so she will not get to hot. And make sure she cannot chew on cord

She's not a baby she looks to be a few months old (2 maybe) and won't let me handle her, so I'm not sure how to do that without scaring her to death picking her up.

I gave her an old sock of mine and she crawled right inside is that okay?

kim3962

Yes can you just reach in with eye dropper and let her drink from that. You have to see her drink. She will go down fast without watter

I worry about waiting until morning to have her treated. It may sound strange and urgent but this is a tiny animal and they do go down fast, at least call and find out the hours so you can take her in. I do worry about you giving her water via a dropper she can aspirate so ?? a syringe is better. Has she been out tonight? Give her some Romaine lettuce, watermelon, water rich things. A box is hard to gage movement. MadAlice the number/vet I gave you is open now and thru the night. All I can say is vet and abs asap, I can not meet up with you until late tomorrow afternoon if needed.

Short of you getting there, do you happen to have any antibiotics on hand, ideally Cipro (Ciprofloxacin), Baytril, or enrofloxacin?

Are you going to take her to the vet or let someone come get her or are you going to keep her. If at least you make a decision we will know how to help you. It just seems we are going in circles.

No circles I would take her to the vet and drop her off leave her in their care. They can take better care of her then I.

Morning, Jackie. :wave123
She mentioned that she was in the Citrus Park area of Tampa.
Sounds like she's doing a pretty good job so far, just overloaded with info.
If you have some Baytril to spare, perhaps you could get some to her.
Before I forget, see if you can get a good age guess. Might still need some supplimental formula.

I would like to give you all an update as to what happened with the flyer we found. She survived until morning, being quite a hardy squirrel. We took her to the vet (Ehrlich animal hospital takes in squirrels) who in turn placed her with a rehabber not too far away. She will be well taken care of, and be placed back into the wild in an area with no predators.

As far as I know of at this moment she is doing alright but we will be getting updates and I will keep you all posted on her status as we become aware of it.

This experience had me falling in love with the cute flying squirrels I hope one day in the future to have one of my own.

I just want to thank you all for the advise you gave me it really helped.
