Hey all,
Im a claims adjuster in Virginia and might have a squirrel stuck in a house. All I have are photos of the chew marks on the wood window frames. Do you think you might be able to confirm this is a squirrel.
They were gone for 10 days and whatever it is got in and havent seen it since. They already cleaned up the scat so we cant figure it out from that. http://s9.postimage.org/nz3n9dx9r/HNL5874001_20.jpg

Those marks look to big to be a squirrel....... the markings almost make me think that some one took a screwdriver to the wood???

My squirrel chews on my window sills and never leaves anything that actually looks like it could be a tooth mark. Those marks look too precise to be a tooth mark. Too square.

Looks as if that squared off piece was pulled off in one chunk - as of it was a piece in itself. The other marks, however, do look like squirrel chew marks... that's pretty much how the top of my hutch looks - now that my 4 guys have been at it :)
Just a thought here...every time I've seen a sq bite or chew mark there's always a defined space between the two front teeth...don't see that here.

Not sure about the bite marks, but it looks like blood on the window. So, whatever did the damage was also hurt/bleeding.
Those perfectly square marks....squirrels are good, but not quite that good. Looks like a screw driver or something.

Upon second glance, I do agree that those square marks to the right do look very suspicious, wayyyy too evenly spaced & regular too. If that was a squirrel it would be ONLY the very small part between the 7 and the 8 on the chart and not including that big square dent.

Sure looks like a squirrel did it to me. My parents went away for the winter and when they returned the sills looked the same. They looked everywhere. They were gone much longer, so when they found the squirrel it was tucked in the pillow of the sofa and completely skelatal and dried up. poor thing fell down the chimney and could not get out or back up, Starved to death. Look around. This squirrel may be weak and very quiet somewhere, but probubly still alive.

I agree with Rhapsody. I'm a contractor and the marks look like a screw driver. When I look close I can see the square marks from the blade straight down to the bottom of the trim.
If it was an animal there would be an ark to the bite in the wood.
Just my opinion :thinking

there was poop?
squirrel poop looks like rat or mouse droppings.
if there was poop, I would guess it had to be an animal.
ask what the poop looked like.

from 9.5 to 8.5 those look like squirrel bites... the others look like a screwdriver was used to chip off a good size hunk of wood...
my guys chew on my window sills and their cage it is a more of a rounding off not big chucks pulled off but they do shave 2-3 inches off a square pice but the teeth marks are a lot closer... mine gnaw.... not take big bites... and they damage is more rounded or arced as their teeth are curved.

Thanks you guys rock. Unfortunately squirrel damage isnt covered under any insurance policy. I was really hoping it was something else. And I agreed that it looked like a tool did some of the damage. Of course that wouldnt be covered. :-)
BTW, how common is it to see what I consider normal grey squirrels, black squirrels and an almost albino squirrel on the same block. Ive got a really diverse group of dudes around here!

It is totally normal to see squirrels of multiple colors in the same area.
The black squirrels and the almost albino are both actually grey squirrels (if they are all approx. the same size). Not sure if you have reds in your area or not, but reds are really little in comparison to a grey.
Soooooooo...the homeowners policy specifically excludes damage caused by a squirrel accidentally trapped inside the house...REALLY??? :thinking :thinking :thinking

yeah, that's a sucky insurance policy.
If I had insurance... hahaha... and I had a wild animal invaded it and damage it, I would want coverage...
So this could have been a raccoon, ?? is that covered?
I think it looks more like porcupine damage myself. Porcupines covered?

Yea I think procupines would be covered. Its the rodent exclusion that keeps the squirrel from being covered. You wont find ANY homeowners coverage that would pay for rodent damage so it doesnt matter who you are with.
Most policies exclude damage from peoples pets too so if it was a pet porcupine that wouldnt be covered. :-P
I let the guy know we wouldnt be covering it, he didnt seem to mind. Possible it was a mix of some kind of animal plus them making it worse to try and get new windows.
