Hi. I have been visiting this forum for sometime and have found the information here useful and the members helpful and knowledgeable. I thought I show introduce myself and my friend Guffy.
Guffy is a Brazilian (also called Guianan) squirrel. That is the only species found here. He is almost 3 years old and I got him the day before his eyes opened. Someone found him on the ground and did not know what to do with him so I took him in. He has been with me ever since.

Wow, cool, Trinidad. I think you might be the first from Trinidad, or at least the only one I know about. Of course you know we WILL be needing to see pictures of Guffy. I can't wait to see a Brazilian squirrel. I'll be waiting. Welcome again.

:Welcome Little Red and Guffy! I think you are the very first member & squirrel from the West Indies. Guffy is absolutely beautiful -- he looks like our grey squirrels, but with the tail of a fox squirrel! I am looking forward to hearing more about his life with you. :)

Cuuuute. 300g... my he is a little one. I think he's smaller than our FL squirrels and they ARE small. Tell us ALL about Guffy. Does he have a cage or nest box? Does he live in the house? What does he eat?
You will find all types of information here that will help, but it sounds like you've already done your research if Guffy is 3 years old.
From the picture, I 'get' your name, 'Little Red'. :) Thanks for sharing Guffy with us! :thumbsup

I live in two houses because my farm and my work is on different ends of the island. So he has a big walk in cage on the farm. 6' x 7' x 3'. I'm busy there so he spends most of his time in it. But I go in and play with him for time to time during the day. The rooms in that house are not sq proof so it would not be safe to let him out there.
In the city he has a smaller cage with a wooden bed box. When ever I'm home , he is out with me (making it difficult to type etc... ).
He eats most anything but particularly likes walls, doors and pens... oh, sorry... you meant his diet? Ok, mostly veggies. He likes pumpkin, squash, lettuce, okra, cucumbers. He gets oranges (after I suck them so he seems to like the white pithy parts), the outer shells of passion fruit, the outer green part of tropical almonds. Plants and leaves I get here... I'm not sure you know them. Also bones, grasshoppers, lizard eggs (if I can find them). Yogurt, watermelon seeds, some palm fruits. Almost any fruit he can lay paws on. Your foreign nuts are expensive so he gets a few as a treat around this time of year when it's in the stores. But he is not really made for opening those nuts and it is quite a challenge for him. We don't have rodent blocks here and I'm not too brave about ordering things on line.

:thankyou for your friendly welcome.
Guffy was brought to me by a client as an emergency. I really did not need one more face to feed and I'd never handled a squirrel before. He had minor injuries with some bleeding around him mouth and an oronasal fistula just behind his left upper incisor so he would bubble milk out his nose.
He was neither cold nor dehydrated and had no major problems so in a few days I repaired the fistula. He still has a very small hole and gets a clear discharge from his nostril on occasion but it does not affect his eating or breathing and I have opted to leave it.
The original plan had been to release... but then his teeth started to grow all over his face. Dealing with the malocclusion took some time and I decided he was a NR. I'm not sure how you guys feel about neutering squirrels here but I decided to neuter Guffy. I had never done a sq before, nor had anyone else in the practice, but there were no problems and my boss doesn't mind us doing our own stuff. His teeth still don't line up perfectly but I have not had to trim them in over a year. His lower teeth do look longer than those I have seen on line (I have not been able to compare them with other local sqs) but he eats differently and uses them to hollow out palm fruits and nuts through a small hole... so i think they are normal.

Vet. I work in a small animal clinic. But we see most anything that walks through the door. I draw the line at venomous snakes. But it is extremely difficult to get good info on squirrels... that is how I ended up on line. None of our exotic formularies or texts mentions squirrels!

One of the major problems we face here is finding vets for our squirrels (and in many cases they are not legal so even makes the challenge harder :shakehead ) you on the other hand can work on your own :thumbsup
I am fortunate to live in Florida where it is a legal state, and even better I have two wonderful vets :thumbsup :thumbsup My Charley has had many surgeries so it has been a blessing to have found him great doctors :bowdown I know of some here who have neutered their squirrel, I didn't have CC done as I guess no reason to (he has paralyses issues) and in his case he had so many surgeries I didn't want his little body to get put through more trauma.

Little LUNA will be released in a month or so--( picture a Heart Breaking Here ) Some squirrels eat the meat--but mine chew that off- and only want the small seed in the center---
Please visit and Say HI !!! TO MY FUZZERS.
Do you have Almenrdra Trees in Trinidad ? My guys chew the hard seeds inside and that keeps their teeth at a good length.
If you find these trees near you ( most grow near the Ocean) give them to Guffy---My Cruiser had teeth problems as a young guy...his upper teeth didn't even come thru until he was over 4 months old...and I had to trim his teeth twice, but not since June --Ya Hoo.

Tropical almonds are not related to almond nuts. They are very common here. I understand the Ca:P of the seed is pretty bad but he mostly eats the outer fruit. Google "tropical almonds" for pics.
Many vets here don't see sqs either. But that is not due to any laws (sq are officially pests here because of our history with cocoa plantations). I suspect it is mainly because you find yourself examining and treating an animal you have not been trained to deal with! Since I've got Guffy a few other vets have called for advice and referred sqs to me. But I do tell them Guffy did NOT come with a manual. I have a friend who is a rehabber and brings her rescues to the clinic, so I guess I've learned to think outside the box.
As for picking my brains... you are free to try... but as I've just explained, there's not much sq stuff in there.

It is a very small seed..and in the wild--I see hundreds of chewed up almendras on the ground. I guess the natunral diet balances the ratio with some other food source ??

Try cutting off most of the fruit...to tempt Guffy to keep chewing the nut.>>> we even start a cut into the hard NUT with a hack-saw blade--...to "train" our squirrels ( when very young)-to chew-chew-chew the hard NUT casing...
When you hear that scritch-scritch of teeth on nut...
You can be sure that the incisors are being ground down...

Oh it's not that he does't chew at it. He will if i leave it. I'm just not sure he gets enough calcium to allow him to eat too many. He loves chewing on them... and yes, it does go scritch scritch lol. But I take it away when he's had some of the seed. I guess out there they eat lots of other stuff.
I never had to help him with a saw... he's always known what to do.

Yes, that's exactly what we have here. Lots of them. Guffy eats all the meat, then takes off all the fiber and gnaws a hole and eats the seed just like in your pic. So you think it's ok to let Guffy eat the seed? He agrees with you... but then, he wants to eat everything!

Hi SGM/LM. I thought I recognised you from a post I was reading...
The nail clip thing is what happens when a dog rescuer-trainer/vet who knows nothing about squirrels has to raise a squirrel without help. By the time I realised there was online help Guffy was already almost 2yrs. No one told me squirrels don't like to lie on their backs and have their feet, ears and mouth handled... that's the first thing all my dogs have to learn.

I had the pleasure to visit Trinidad and Tobago about 25 years ago...First time I ever had Shark Bake and Goat Roti,,,and a wonderful "fast food" from a street vendor called Doubles...

:) Have a good time at the farm. We have the Fruit Loops video to entertain us again... and again... and again--teehee--so we won't miss you too much (:rolf just thinking about The Face makes me crack up!).
You and Guffy will be missed though--even though we've just met you! Can't wait for the next 25 videos you'll surely get of Guffy when you return! :poke :D

I'm back but the computer is giving up the ghost so I don't know how long I'll be here.
Stosh - goat roti, doubles and shark & bake? I can tell you had a Trini show you 'round and not a guide book!!! Seems you got all the important things while you were here!:D
It was so cold on the farm at nights... we're talking socks in bed and two blankets and furry slippers cold! It usually gets cold at Christmas but it's been so cloudy that the nights were warm. It was almost 24C !!! Now don't laugh at me... I'm a tropical child and I start to shiver below 27C - 25C.
Lots of videos and pics of my boy but don't know if computer will last!

Welcome back!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for your computer.
I'm chuckling about the "cold" 27C - 25C. It was -7C this morning in the Midwest. I'll bet Fireweed could give us some REALLY cold temps.

You can chuckle if you like! Human beings were not made to live at those temps! I always wanted to see snow when I was a kid... then I experienced 12C and the dream died!.
In the mean time, I have let Guffy's diet get out of hand and he has decided veggies are not for him. He doesn't want to eat them! I've been working on a number of solution... one that seems to work is simply to not give them to him. Leave them in the plastic bags and tell him not to touch it. He is so nosey he just can't help himself. He just gotta see what's in the bags!

He moves like a little red squirrel - reminds me of Jeffrey. The super fast moves, the splayed toes - he is Trinidad's version of a little red!

I emailed a good friend of mine a couple hours ago and he told me he was in the airport on his way to Trinidad for a little while. He's always travelling, so I had no idea about this short trip. Anyway, of course this made me think only one thing: GUFFY! :D
So if you have any more photos, stories, or videos, please post. :hyper

:) Your friend should have a good time here. It's the run up to carnival so there are a lot of fetes. And the weather is great as the dry season is now starting.
The new pics and videos are still on the camera. Just haven't had the time recently. As soon as I get them up I'll post here:)

Hi friends, I've been gone for so long and there are so many threads and stories to catch up on here. Here are 2 videos of what happens to my Guffy when he gets yogurt. First he starts to bounce, then he wants belly rubs.

Honestly, LR, I can barely deal with Guffy. He is WAY beyond cute---he's like a mix between a fruit bat, a flying squirrel, an American Red Squirrel, and a Tarsier.

I seriously don't know of any baby squirrel I could do that to, who was older than maybe 6 weeks?? What a precious boy you've got there -- oh my gosh!!! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon
Maybe we need to move Guff's thread out of Introduce Yourself and into the Nursery section? For some reason the thread doesn't come up in New Posts...:shakehead

IR if the thread needs to be moved, go right ahead and put it where it should be. But Guffy says he is not a baby!:D
