Hi everyone! What an amazing board and sooooo helpful! A young squirrel showed up in front of my apt last April to join in on the food that ive been giving the other locals..:) i noticed right away that her fur was spotty. Being the spring and then summer i wasnt too worried. I knew it was mange and noticed a couple times her fur would grow back only to lose it again! By sept/oct i was getting very concerned with the cold weather coming and she ( i named her Rose) wasnt growing back fur and her poor bare skin was susceptible to frostbite. I found a wonderful animal rescue/rehab lady on long island ny and she told me about ivermectin. So i bought it right away and searching this site was able to get correct dosage. She took her 2nd dose on a pecan this morning! Woohoo! ive been taking pics of her healing and will post later...Christmas morning will be her 3rd dose---merry Christmas Rose! We have been having pretty mild weather so far so thank goodness she has been able to hang in there. So all is good but now i have a question..not sure where all of this will post with answers but ill search...i bought the mazur rodent blocks 6F and maybe ive spoiled these little guys with unsalted dry roasted peanuts in the shell because they will not touch the blocks. Ive smeared peanut butter on them but they sniff and look elsewhere for peanuts. I bought a 50 lb bag thinking theyll finally get some nutritional food and gobble it right up..not! If anyone has some suggestions id sure appreciate them, any! Im thinking maybe they will catch on as long as i dont give them anything else and there will the solution. Thank you in advance and bless you all for having such huge open hearts to help these little guys! Most of my homeowner friends i cant even tell that i feed let alone medicate a sick squirrel :(

Yeah, they are spoiled. Here is how I do my Mazuri for the wilds:

Dump however many you plan on feeding for the day into a microwave proof bowl. Put just enough vegetable oil in so that when you stir them up they are all coated with the oil but not sitting in a pool of it. Drop a blob of peanut butter on top and pop in the micro for about 2 minutes on HI to soften the peanut butter. Take them out and stir so the PB is coating the blocks, then back in the micro. I heat them on HI for about 5 minutes - you want them boiling, bubbling, cause 3rd degree burns hot. The oil thins the peanut butter and the heat causes the porous blocks to suck the mixture up. That way it isn't just on the outside - the taste goes all the way through the block. You might want to start using crunchy PB because that way there will be little pieces of peanut in there as well.

I do about 4-5 cups of this in the morning and put it out on their feeding platform. Jays and blackbirds will steal some too. In the afternoon, if they have cleaned their plates, I sometimes pitch them a few peanuts. I would hold off on the peanuts until your guys understand that the blocks are pretty tasty. I have a minimum of 50 or so squirrels that visit and everyone likes it.

:Welcome to the squirrel board. Glad you found us. Hold off on the peanuts, and when they are hungry I bet they will eat the Mazuri blocks. Thankyou for taking care of the wilds

This is a photo that was just e-mailed to me..This is ROSE, the squirrel that he is trying to treat with Invermectin( on a pecan). It seems several of the wilds are loosing fur.

I was asked toost the email also---

Dear stosh2010,I just came upon your offer to post pics. I only have an ipad right now(my son "borrowed" my desktop) and dont seem to be able to send pics right to the board.
Here is Rose, but im starting to see signs that she is a he. But he/ she comes when i call Rose so whats in a name anyway? (thank you Shakespeare)
I gave her the 3 doses if ivermectin, 1 dose a week for 3 wks and i thought i was beginning to see some improvement the first week but after the 3rd dose, Christmas morning, she has lost more hair! Its breaking my heart. I thought i read in one of the posts that if the 1st doses dont work, wait a bit and begin the 3 doses again ??? . Im very careful with the ivermectin and put the dose on a pecan and watch her eat it. The other squirrels are taking the blocks i put out but not her. As i am writing i see another little one with tail hair thinning. Im afraid the nest is terribly infected. I am recovering from surgery and very restricted to any bending or lifting so trapping at this time im just not able to do. I live in an apt complex so their nesting areas are scattered and i try to watch where they (mostly Rose) go but ive read that they have multiple nests should one be destroyed. I wouldnt know how to treat the nest anyway. It looks like the only option for her recovery that i am able to do at this time is re-administer the ivermectin. Sorry im putting this in an email instead of a post. Maybe it can be posted with the pic? In the meantime, any suggestions sure would be appreciated!
Thank you, robchap7

Cook much less time. I do about 5-6 cups a day of the stuff and it takes five minutes to cook it through. It will take just a few seconds if you are just doing a small quantity. I would do 30 seconds on HI and do it in 30 second bursts until you know how long it takes you to do YOUR quantity. Keep an eye on them - you do want them to "boil" in the oil/PB mixture but not burn...
