Hi everyone i am new here. i have had my squirrel for 6 months now and she has never been sick, she has been happy and healthy until this past week. she started having diarrhea for maybe 3 days and it stopped yesterday but has since started having bleeding, and a giant tissue looking thing she has been trying to pass through her anus. I am terrified and need to know if any of you have heard of this happening before. I live in an illegal state so i have a friend lined up that owns a rescue with a vet on hand that i can place her with if this is life threatining. it will break my heart but i dont want my baby to die. thanks for any help.

can you email me pics of what you are seeing?
thecrazysquirrellady@gmail.com
I will post them for the rehabbers to see..

we will have alot of questions about her environment and diet..
can you give us details about both? domestic pets?
is she active? lethargic?
it is best to stay on task, this could be serious.
Is there alot of RED blood?

JIT I am thinking anal prolapse?

Squirrly_Girl_Mom

im trying to post the pictures and i dont think the e mail option on my phone is working so i am trying the usb cable. Untill a few days ago i was feeding her: nuts; Sunflower seeds, pistascios, almonds, brasil nuts, cashews, macadamia, wild acorns , fresh fruit, Berries, mellon, kiwi, apples, pairs, bananas, granola bars.

She has been very active, up until last night which she was still moderatly active, climbing table legs and door frames, but she wanted to be with me more than usual.

i have a rat and 3 dogs, she is always kept out of sight of the dogs. the rat and her share a room not a cage though i have put them in the same cage together to play before.

JIT I am thinking anal prolapse?very possible..
clean area with syringe filled with warm water..
gently pat dry with fresh clean sterile guaze {no threads or fuzz}
regular white sugar and water, made in to a paste/
painted on with ssmall watercolor type paint brush, small cosmetic brush {alsoclean}
repeat every thirty minutes until a hrd shell is formed...
this will alllow tissue to stay alive/not necrotic
I do advise antibiotics if have on hand, let us know what you DO have.
Pklease private message administartion as to your location so a back up plan can be put in place if possible. This will require sesdation to place back into positio0n, this can be fatal even with a vet...
a pic will really help...
TSB has many great rehabbers to help. hoping spmeone is near you to help assess
please do not hesitate...I would think no matter what is going on, it is serious.
hugs and good vibes

omg i dont have any sugar on hand and no car to take her anywhere!
sorry about the diet i couldnt find anything online when i got her except donot feed her peanuts. my phone will not allow me to send the pictures. she is doing fine. now, the tissue seams to only stick out when she pushes, is that normal for a prolapse? should i just clean it and put the gause over it and hold her? she is breathing normal and sitting quietly in her nest box.

Squirrly_Girl_Mom

omg! i dont have antibiotics either, all i have is a year and a half old amoxicillian liquid, and tripple antibiotic ointment.

NECROTIC means DEAD.
we would be trying to preserve the life of her butt tissue.her guts.
do you have a scale that will weigh in grams?
do you have legible clearly marked 1 cc syringe..
I know this is alot coming atcha, but this could be serious..
how much tissue can you see?
what is her activity level?
everything needs to be spotlessly clean/sterile.
what anti biotics do you have... call someone and GET SUGAR please... also have them check their med cabinet for antibiotics...
pet meds OR people meds...adults and kid meds..
is she drinking water?
were you able to tell admin your location?
even in ilegal states we sometimes have helpers..
some one that would be able to assist with meds or a safe vet would be optimum

you know what they say..a pic is worth a million...

HAVE YOU SEEN ANY WORMS???
FLEAS???? in your rat or sq poop?
btw, how is rat poop? and rat activity level?

Squirrly_Girl_Mom
12-12-2012, 07:12 AM
no i have seen no signs of parasites in either of their poop. and the rat is happy and active. everyone i know is out of town and at work right now i have no one i can call. i can walk to the store and get some sugar but i cant go anywhere else until my husband gets home late this afternoon. i actully live close to you. where is a safe vet and if i was able to get my husband to come home from work, would he see her not get us fined? if i cannot see a safe vet without getting fined i will have to turn her over to a rehab. but since i found this place i have found the reasources of what is a good diet and stuff so i would like to keep her if i could.

oh and i have a sirnge. just use tap water or should i make saline water?

Jackie in Tampa
12-12-2012, 07:23 AM
yes//saline is better..weak
if in florida...you are legal and some vets will see sqs...it is their choice.
My vet does not take sq patients... she is a domestics vet..
however I know several all over florida that will and there are many members in florida to help with that... many are rehabbers.

If THAT close to me, I could take her my vet, but neither of us have a car...:shakehead

so it isn't legal to have easter gray squirrels here? if so i will be sooo happy! Do you have the name and number of one in hernando county? i could get my husband come home if we knew of a good one to take her to. and would you know how much the procedure would cost roughly so i can take out the right amount with me?

Florida is one of the states where you are permitted to own a squirrel....lucky you.
Jackie will help you find a vet, I'm sure.

Squirrly_Girl_Mom
12-12-2012, 07:44 AM
Thank you all!!! I am so happy to know this, i had thought it was illegal because a woman had gotten one from up north from her brother who wasn't treating it right and she couldn't take care of it either, so she called the cops to pick it up and i guess they had told her it wasn't legal. Guess the dont know everything.

Jackie in Tampa

I have private messaged a woman near you, crazy4squirrels.
I do know vets in Port richey, New port richey, we have several members with vets in the general ocala area..
YES... eastern greys are fine in florida.
do you have any formula? what formula did you use?
sometimes diarrhea can be a sign /sympton of MBD, metabolic bone disease, low calcium intake..
Captive sqs require a very regimen diet...
after we are stable here, I recommend you realy really spend some time in our nutrition forum...
MBD is a common mistake we make as sq owners..
it actually brings more people looking for help to TSB than any one other issue... yes, that serious.
Keep her on the QT...
low calcium is super dangerous.. I am not diagnosing your sq, I am not a licensed rehabber or medical person..I have dealt with MBD in the past though.
really wish we could have a pic...

I was shocked when I learned that myself.
I think a lot of members here want to move to Florida for that reason...:D

i fed her esmbliac puppy milk replacer and i made it thick. she didn't get weened until she was 10 or 11 weeks old. could i have also a vet in new port richey's number too i know that area well too. And yes i plan on spending ALOT of time in the nutrision fourm after this. i went out and bought gunnie pig food last night. i looked for the blocks but all i could find was timothy blocks (walmart) and i know those are for rabbits.

Jackie in Tampa
12-12-2012, 07:58 AM
no hay based products.
guinea pig food is all wrong.
Sqs do not digest hay well..can actualy cause blockage.

do you have any esbilac left? dilute it weak and try to get her to eat...
do you have any human calcium tablets...WITHOUT D?
how about tums? they are calcium.

I am slow typer, sorry to be brief and staunch sounding.

I know this vet personally

rat blocks are more suitable for sqs.
Kaytee is vegetarian as far as Walmart...

HHBs are choice and made for sqs, they are all natural and contain exactly what a sq needs daily, you will see them mentioned often here.

esbilac has been known to cause diarrhea also, however she maybe calcium low.
do you have esbilac or tums... this is important.
I have to step away.
hoping one of the rehabbers can help you..
it has been mentioned in a PM maybe she is impacted... can you describe her poops and when you saw what? diarrhea? last solid poop?

she hasn't really been pooping or anything this morning and i havent seen as much blood. when any poop comes out now it just oozes a little and its not much. She seems to be stable when she sits quietly. i called the new port richey vet and there is no doctor in today, and the tech's seem to be too busy to talk to me. did loopy ever get back to you yet?

feels soft i have been pressing lightly every once in a while to see if she whinces with pain, and she acts like there is no pain in it. the only pain she expresses is when she is trying to push the thing in her anus out. she squeeks a tiny bit and tightenes up her body and pushes with her legs, and it comes out for like 10 seconds then goes back inside.

If you are in a dire need of lab blocks I can come deliver some 2018 to you for free. It's not "henrys" but it works for all of the research rodents where my girlfriend works and also is recommended for growing squirrels on a number of sites, just not this one.

You can enema her also if you absolutely need to unblock her, but if you aren't well versed in emergency animal care i wouldn't press the issue

Btw, so now that this is under control, now is the time to also get the diet under control. Please see the following link for the food pyramid. If the diet continues as is, the next time you'll be here is when your squirrel becomes paralyzed and is having seizures from MBD. We've probably had 2-3 die of it in the last week alone. Squirrels have very specific needs.

So now that that's over, you're correcting her diet, right? Seems like every other day we get another squirrel parent who's little baby is in serious trouble because the diet has been bad. Right now there's a guy that I'm really worried about because his 8 year old is having big problems and we think it's because he wasn't feeding her rodent blocks. He's at the vet right now, or at least I hope he is. I'm really praying that his squirrel made it through the night.
