We're amazed & puzzled by a squirrel we saw recently in our yard (we live on the north shore of Long Island NY). This large gray squirrel had matching black marks above its hind legs, each one roughly the size of a silver dollar. And its ears were unusually furry, with long tufts extending from them. The only other unusual feature about this squirrel is its size--very fat. Is this a species we've never spied before? Or do these markings, furry ears and fatness indicate that we're in for a rough winter? Still hoping to snap a shot next time it returns. Can anyone solve this mystery?
