When I had Pearl she didn't eat them. She would eat the pecans and spit out the rest. Now I have Rose and she kind of eats them. Better then Pearl but not enough. They cost sooo much to just go to wast. Is there a recipe to make then at home?:thankyou

vitamins can be purcahsed at henrys only.
it may not be completely cheap, but still affordable.
Henrys have a flat shipping cost of 5.99 or something like that.
a bulk pakcage of vitamins will last you about 6 months for one squirrel.
That is a great deal!
And it is worth the cost because it will ensure that your squirrel gets the best stuff.
The next good commercial block is harlan teklad, but it will have to be purchased online only.
Kayti forti diet for rats and mice blue bag can be found at pet stores, but they have been having some recalls recently, so don't know what the situation with them is right now.
Maybe, those who use them will be able to advise.
In the long run HHBs might be cheaper because you only need 2 HHBs per day per squirrel (just to ensure s/he eats them).
Commercial blcok - you have to feed more. 4-5 average
Some rehabbers keep a bowl full at all times.

You think it will be cheeper to just buy them over making them my felf?
it depends on your budget
some people find it easier to buy already made
others - prefer to make themselves
you can check prices at www.henryspets.com and see what works for you best

I've never had a squirrel NOT eat them. Even the older babies that never like me and hate everything including Fox Valley, LOVE their HHB's. All of my releases have come home for at least the first 2-3 weeks after release for their HHB's, some have come home daily for many months after release to get them...AND, they've taught their kids to eat them too.

You could try Zupreen Primate chow. I just bought some as a backup to Henry's. I actually ate some myself too! :rotfl Hey, it's a complete diet for great apes so that technically includes humans...was thinking about it for Prepping. Anyways, it tastes like bland Corn Pops...which seems way better than the staple rodent blocks (not that I ate the rodent blocks! but Zupreen smells better. LoL!!).
I give them to my guys to munch on during the day. They pretty much ignored them at first but they're starting to take to them. If I stopped feeding Henry's, I bet they'd eat them pretty well. If you have a guy with bad teeth or poor digestion, you can soak them in a bit of warm water.
You can get them here in 3lb or 20lb bags (also, many Feed & Seed stores have it or will order it for you and some Superpetz, PetCo's, and local/small business pet stores carry it):

Here is Zupreem's info (they make great zoo quality food for a variety of animals INCLUDING COONS [YaY!!]):

First, just give them the blocks and nothing else for the first half of the day. If they don't have a bunch of other things to eat, they WILL eat them. My guy knows that if his HHBs aren't eaten when I get home from work that when he gets to come out and lay waste to my room at night, he won't get any treats in ther (I hide goodies all over for him to find). He gets his uneated HHBs! You should see him start jamming them into his mouth when I walk in at night so he gets his treats!:rotfl
To save some money, repurpose your HHB leftovers. Pick up all the pieces at the end of the day and put them in a baggie or something in the fridge. When you have a little quantity, toss them into the blender or grinder (or if you have good knife skills you can mill through them with a chopping knife) until they are very fine crumbs. Add a little bit of apple sauce to wet them and a tiny bit of almond butter to make a fairly firm, slightly sticky dough, and roll them in little balls. You can either "dry" them in a very low oven or feed them as they are. I like to roll them in sesame seeds, which are very high in calcium. Keep the "dough" in the fridge. They may even like these more than the original ones, and it will eliminate all the waste.
