I was given a bag of large acorns, there are small white worms in the bag with the acorns. I am going to wash them and sort them and remove any with holes in them. Will these be safe for my gray squirrel. I don't want to give her anything that could hurt her.

All acorns if not kept in freezer will get worms/guess they come from within :dono CC loves the worms, but I never give him any acorn with a hole or crack in it....I just don't take chances, not worth it, there is mold on old acorns and it can cause problems...so better to throw them out, not sure if you should wash them, may cause more mold :dono

The worms are a okay and they love them! To tell if an acorn is bad or not place in a bowl of water. Sinkers good and floaters are bad. I read it somewhere on the site awhile back and did this then ditched the floaters and froze the rest. Before I give them any I test them again and they actually love them frozen! Oh and yes I automatically throw away any that are cracked! I haven't had a problem yet!

Quagmire has issues with chewing through any kind of shell now, so sometimes I bite the top of the acorns for him. He will get the rest out on his own. Imagine my surprise when a seemingly perfect acorn (no holes or cracks) had a large worm inside right near the top.
Just so you know, they don't taste like chicken. :yuck

Thanks for the input. My sister in law picked the acorns up as soon as they fell on the ground. She froze them so Mold should not be a problem. I never have given her the ones with holes or cracks. I know that there have been no chemicals. I will wash them and throw out the floaters. I just want to be sure that I don't put my baby at risk. She was 5 years old last summer and a real sweetheart.
