Tail chewing

My 7 year old male squirrel has been chewing on his tail the past two days until it is bloody.How do I get him to stop?????

Did he injure it somehow? any Insect stings, fleas? mites? try washing his tail with mild soap and water in case there is an irritant on it. He may have damaged his tail and getting weird sensations from it. See if you can determine a cause for the problem.

Have you changed bedding? laundry soap for his bedding? anything that might prompt a skin allergy?

No Bugs anywhere to be seen, only chages is my mother passed away 2 weeks ago and I have not been giving him the attention that he is used to.
When I clean it and put neosporin on it he starts to chew again, if i just wash it and leave it alone he does also.

At this point I don't know what else to suggest other than tending to it and maybe paying more attention to him and see if that helps. I'm not a squirrel expert, I've just had animals with allergies that do similar things.

Hi Carolyn,

If he keeps up with the tail chewing you will need to put an elizebethan collar on him, this is the same as what the dogs and cats wear. I will watch for your thread or send me a PM and let me know how he is doing and I will find out directions on making one of the collars.

My Charley Chuckles is now 8 years old...he has back leg paralysis/not that he has any trouble getting around/but for some reason years ago he began to chew his tail :osnap not sure if he injured it/or what/ anyway I DID EVERYTHING to stop him, I used EVERY product :shakehead it got so bad if I hadn't had it removed (docked) he would have died of the infection :Cry It was so horrifying to me at the time...not that he would have his tail mostly removed /but to have surgery :shakehead well he has a BUNNY BUTT TAIL now and I just love it :jump he healed so well and it never messed up his balance :thumbsup
