View Full Version : Help, squirrel sprayed by pesticide Rockledge FL
I received a call from a friend of mine who's son works for a pest control company and noticed a baby squirrel in the zone that he already sprayed in.:shakehead He is pretty devastated
He described the squirrel as small enough to curl in the palm of his hand, he has fur, some fluff on tail, eyes open. He had already washed off the squirrel, dried it and is doing his best to keep him warm.
Laurie or Karen are going to make hour drive from Volusia County to get the squirrel.
Needs to know how to treat once they pick it up.
Advise please:Love_Icon

Depending upon what type of pesticide he used, and for what species of "vermin" (insect or mammal), the baby may or may not be in danger. In general you'll want to have hydration fluid on hand -- flavored Pedialyte or homemade solution -- to give fluids first to flush out any toxins from the squirrel's system. Cleaning him off was a good move - he won't be grooming the chemicals off his fur and ingesting them. If you can find out what the pesticide was we can do better research.

Gina, find out exactly what the poison is and contact poison control.
I would rewash with a strong solution of DAWN and water when you get him. That stuff has so many sufactants in it - that is why it cuts grease so well. Many pesticides are oil based so they stick.

Yes, the name of the pesticide helps to know because the effects may not be immediate.
Toxicity can present later if it's spread into the blood system or organs.
Update:
Ends up he is 3 hours away..but the squirrel seems to be doing better. Laurie called him and gave him awesome advise on what to do with him in the meantime.
He has gotten a container and t-shirts from one of his customers. He is heading to store for watermelon for the baby to eat and get fluids until he gets here.
He will be in Orange City later today and will drop the squirrel of to me then. I will be in contact with Karen for help with baby if/as needed.
We had a bad connection but the pesticide sounded like Calston?? not sure. He said he bathed him with soap that has no chemicals. Is soap they are to wash with themselves if they get chemical on them. He is almost certain baby did not swallow or lick any chemicals from his skin.
Is going to text me a picture and I will upload if I can figure out how to get it from phone to computer:flash3
Prayers in the meantime
I know I am NEVER online anymore:sanp3 but emergencies so glad you are there:grouphug
All my furry monkeys are doing great. Down to 4 in pre-release barn cage. Wayne and Garth awesome as always
Boomer escaped but is hanging out in the yard with the A-team, Isobelle and earlier releases. I love my chunky yard babies!!
I asked him to text me the name of chemical...will update as soon as he gets back to me.
I guess he has a large territory and is driving all over...dont know if we can pin him down

ok you seriously do NOT want to Google "Calston" unless you are in a place where you can laugh out loud......:jump:jump
Gina it sounds as if this baby is in good hands and has every chance of survival if that stuff was not truly deadly. Got my fingers crossed here! :thumbsup

So of course I had to Google it...:D
Name of chemical is Talstar
He said label said to wash with warm soap and water so that is what he did. I am glad he used warm water. The homeowners let him come inside to wash and dry him.
He is so amazed at all the people helping him with this baby and asked me to thank everyone.

Thanks Gina, let me know if you need anything.
I have sub Q fluids, out of syringes though cause I used them all up with Sookie.
I do have needles.
I have another squirrel to go pick up during my break so that worked out then, huh?

This is the baby. It looks good now but I am sure worried about possible effects of the chemical. It could be as late as 5-6 before it gets to me.

Jordan said he was very, very hungry and ate watermelon. He is sleeping now.
Will keep you posted.
So glad he is able to send pics to me from his cell phone. Here he is eating.

It's a Boy!! I am guessing his age to be 6-7 weeks. Tail nicely fluffed, curls over his back. He is stressed out so I did not weigh him yet. I did try to offer formula but he only ate .50 cc. I think he is very tired and just wants to be warm and rest a while. The watermelon has kept him hydrated and full. I will try to feed him again before I go to bed tonight.
I got the full story on how he was found. Jordan had just sprayed the perimeter of the house and bent down to check his hose when he noticed the squirrel under the drainspout. He said it was huddled up there and did not try to run or anything. when he picked him up he was not very responsive.
Because he had sprayed that area and it appeared that some of the spray got on his backside, he gave him a bath to remove everything and dried him off. He then put the squirrel inside his shirt to keep him warm and dry. It was over an hour before the squirrel began to move around. When he fed him the watermelon he ate fast and alot as if he had not eaten in a while.
After that he slept and would just nibble on the watermelon throughout the day.
Soooo, I am thinking he fell from nest, became seperated from mom either last night or early this morning. It was very cool and damp and I hope the exposure was not for long. I will be watching him for cold symptoms:Love_Icon .

Poor little guy.
Your friend felt so badly, but he in fact saved his life. :thumbsup
Mr. McFluffy, the little boy I got today from Shelly3 was found by her
husband near the pool equipment he was servicing.
Same age and similary story, they will be brothers for sure!
Now who will be their Squammy....:thinking

Mc Fluffy!! I love his name! Glad your little rescue is doing better too and our two are way too alike to not be brothers. I am falling for him :nono and need to part ways with him soon or I won't be able to let go. Crazy, crazy, crazy!!
Well, the little guy finally decided to eat a little better this time. I had to keep trying and finally he realized, hey, I am hungry. This stuff is not as good as moms, but maybe just a little.
So he ate close to 2.5 cc's, not great by any means but better then nothing.
He was still pretty stressed, too interested in checking out his surroundings. Hoping by morning he will have settled in a bit. His first day with humans has been pretty hectic:tilt

Well I lost the Squammy standoff (or did I win?? :thinking :dono :D)
Calston (lol) has come to join Mr. McFurry and they are like twins! :thumbsup
And I had misspelled his name earlier...Mr McFurry was the name given by the little girl who sadly parted with him.
