I have always worried about getting enough calcium in my squirrels diets. I think we all do. When they are having free time on my patio they will occasionally eat a lizard and I noticed that they go for the bony parts first. Hands, feet, jaw. This is horrific because I also love lizards and it really bothers me.

My husband accidentally come across a solution while snacking on sardines. Sardines have a very soft skeletal bone structure which includes the whole spine and ribs which is full of calcium. He set aside a couple of the bones from the sardines and fed them to the squirrels and HOLY COW! They ate them like they were candy.

I've read that some people on this board offer squirrels clean bones or shells for calcium but my squirrels never liked the shells or bones or the fish calcium thing from the pet store but they love sardine bones. They are very soft and break easily but are consumed by my two within a nano second.

Just an idea. Hope this helps people out there struggling with calcium issues.

By the way, my squirrels also are fond of grape seed oil. Any idea why?
