Earl the squirrel

Hello ,
Need some advice, A little history first- I have a male squirrel about 15 weeks old, found in the woods, screaming The first week of Sept. , lots of maggots very weak and looked rough, eyes were open. Re hab went pretty good, cleaned him up , gave him Pet Electrolyte Naturvet, then started on Hartz Precision Nutrition Milk replacer for puppies. Everything going well. growing active, looking good, after a few weeks along with milk replacer he was eating a mix of raisins, dried bananas, oat meal, coconut, cranberries, almonds, (It was a people mix that we had. ) along with some apple slices every day . We would move his cage box outside during the day at the base of a tree and he was free to climb a tree or get back in his cage and into his nest box. still getting puppy milk replacer . On 10-3-2012 We put his nest box in a tree and he was now staying outside full time, He was still getting puppy milk 2-3 times per day, along with a feeder filled with Sunflower seed ,corn, and some chicken scratch mix ,raisins, banana chips , apple slices. He ate a lot of corn and banana chips, Around 10-17 -2012- about 11-12 weeks old now and weaned from the milk replacer, , We now added peanuts to the mix ( Maybe our big mistake ), he loved peanuts and would go crazy for them, , He just about quit eating all the other stuff only wanted peanuts, . Then about 2 weeks ago He had some skin irritations around his ears, scratching all the time, ears scratched raw, (applied Neosporin) A few days ago more skin irritations, on sides and base of tail scratching all the time, seemed sick, not feeling well, Thought he may have a mite problem put some food grade diatomaceous earth (that we use on our chickens) on him and in his nest box. Yesterday took the peanuts away, seemed to be breathing hard and not eating getting weak, seemed like he cant swallow properly.
This morning , getting a lot worse, acting unusual , had to be with you , This morning I put some drops of Sentry Fipro Guard on his back ( fipronil for cats) some one said his was good for lice and mites, ( if that is what is causing the skin irritations) . very thirsty but can not drink much water, cant seem to open his mouth as normal. Can drink very little seems very hungry but cant eat, I gave him a peanut he cannot even open his mouth enough to break the shell open. I am feeding him with a syringe now today 11-8-2012 giving him some electrolyte, and some puppy milk replacer, then I mixed up an antacid tablet (calcium )with a table spoon of banana and mixed well, he is only able to get small sips of this stuff down,,,, any ideas ??
Cant seem to post a picture ??

sounds like he is in major trouble. I hope someone qualified comes on soon and reply's. I don't know much but I know enough to know it sounds really bad. It could be a number of things, I have never heard of any of the stuff put on him but it may be ok, may not. He can't open his mouth or he doesn't feel like opening it?

Where is Bristol located?
I am still looking for someone.
Do you have him on a heating pad set on low. Half under the container, and half off.
Can you post a picture?
You have full access now.

You NEED to get calcium into him, drop by drop if you have to.
Take a tums and smash it up, dissolve into water, and give it to him, drop by drop if you have to.
Make the goat's milk recipe and start with this or ensure. They make pecan flavored.......he needs nurishment too.

3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt

Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.

Do not add the heavy cream right away, wait a couple of days, and then add.

I think Nancy is on to something here. Get calcium into him. Tums is an easy way to do it - it even comes in fruit flavors. I would start getting 500mg a day into him, broken into many small doses through the day, and you need to do some reading on MBD. His diet is very deficient and high in many things that will bring on metabolic bone disease. Start the calcium NOW.

Go "full baby" on him, too - put his cage or container on a heating pad - this hurts their bones and the heat is soothing, plus it means they don't have to waste energy generating their own heat. Hang with us - you will learn about the disease - it will be treated with a total diet change and supplemental calcium for some time.

This is a treatment that helps them to improve right away if the cause is in fact MBD. However, it is NOT a problem that is solved when they improve. MBD is actually the hollowing of their bones due to lack of Calcium. It is VERY painful and long-lasting if the treatment is not continued for an extended period of time.
Please go to the nutrition forum here on TSB and read up on proper diet. I would suggest getting some Healthy Blocks from http://henryspets.com/ and begin a whole new feeding routine for your friend. Everyone here will be happy to help, so please ask away! :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug

Thanks for the advice
Even though he cannot open his mouth properly, Tonight he was able to sip down thru the syringe 6 ml of water with a tums dissolved in it ( for immediate calcium ) and 12 ml of Pet Electrolyte. I am learning , No more peanuts, I am just reading about the teeth and will be checking them right away in the morning .

Oh my, what a sweet foxer! I really hope you can bring him in and help him. There are some sites you can order the good stuff from, formula , blocks, etc. but for right now the goats milk formula and tums supplement and heat is good. This squirrel is older but still eating from a syringe, so the pecan ensure is good and if you can get fox valley to supplement that's good too. But the best for a squirrel eating solids is Henry's Healthy Blocks
Here are the sites you can order blocks and formula from.

PLEASE get this little one inside , quiet, dark, safe in cage, and on heat. You will be needing to treat him like a baby. Please give us an update as soon as you can.
Oh and please feed the formula, etc. warm like body temp. or a little above. You can put the formula in a plastic cup and drop it in a coffee cup or thermos or teapot, whatever you have, of warm water, don't microwave the formula itself just the water to warm it. This will keep it from getting hot spots. Test it on your wrist before giving it.
