Hi everyone,

I am trying to help a relative of mine with her squirrel who appears to be suffering from MBD. I have read all the posts here on emergency treatment and long term treatment, so far he seems to be improving.

However, this squirrel LOVES the dry flakey seaweed bought in the sushi section (the kind you wrap the fish up in).

Is this safe to give? He has had it in the past with no ill effects; but I have no idea if its appropriate right now while treating for MBD. I know it is high in iodine; I'm not sure if he likes it so much because he is lacking this in his diet or if he just loves the smell and taste. Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

I always say that if it isn't on the healthy list don't add it when trying to work on diet. Are you doing the emergency treatment with Tums?

Human calcium supplements are good too if they have vitamin D. Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption. Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine (but not direct too hot sun)

My skunks have all loved seaweed! The sushi wraps should be fine to feed. I have no idea the calcium content, but see no reason not to let him have it as a treat. As with any food, I would just give a small amount until we know better the pros vs. the cons!
