I have a baby girl squirrel. She weighs 75 grams. She eats 5cc every 3 1/2 -4 hours. Today one of her eyes opened so I believe that she is almost 5 weeks old. Last night she aspirated.Today she is not acting right. She is hardly moving. She is still eating good and peeing and pooping.I hear no clicking but she just isn't moving around like she usually does.Do you think that she possibly has pneumonia? I have Bactrim DS (800-160mg). I have read on here to dissolve 1/4 tablet into 5 ml of water and the dosage is .01 per 25 grams of body weight which means that she would get .03. I just want to make sure that this dosage sounds right and if you think that I should give her the medicine? Please, I don't want to lose my precious girl.

:Welcome
Can you tell us a bit more about your baby? How long have you had her and where did you get her? Was she injured etc.?
I am directing an expert here to help with dosing.

We have had her for almost 2 weeks. She was not injured. She and her sister were given to us because the mother was killed. Not sure how long she was without her mother but they both have been doing great up til now.She just lays there and hardly moves. She did come looking for us whenever we moved the blanket when it came to feeding time until today.I am very worried.

They were on a different puppy formula until I read on here about FV.I finally received it in the mail.It took a little bit since it was a holiday here on Monday and the mail did not run.We weaned them slowly from the old to the FV like I have read on here to do and they are now on the full FV.

Do you get that from a vet? I haven't had much luck around this area with vets wanting to help with squirrels.

At 75 grams, your baby is the size of a three week old. What where you feeding prior to this? Did the milk come back out her nose? Will she still eat? Has she been going potty normally?

danang

Was feeding her a puppy formula found at walmart. They have been gaining 5 grams per day.

Is it from a vet?

Liquid is easier. Get the injectable kind (you will NOT be injecting it) The strength of the Baytril you need is 22.7mg/kg.

Do you have the babies on a heat source? Like a heating pad set on LOW under 1/2 of their cage.

Yes.Finally found a vet that would give it up.They close in about 30 minutes.Which one do I need to get? Pill or liquid?

danang

She said the liquid is 20ml per cc solution.

Hold the baby's chest up to your ear and listen to her breathing. If she has aspiration pneumonia you will hear a clicking with every inhale and exhale.

They have a heating pad that does not have auto shut off under half their box and lots of blankets to burrow into.

I hold her up my my ear and it is real hard to tell if there is clicking or just her little noises that she makes.Sorry.I know this isn't helping any.

If you've only got 30 minutes till the vet closes, go get the Baytril. DO NOT take the squirrel with you. Leave her at home on heat.

Just get Baytril in any form you can and when you get home tell us EXACTLY what the label says and if it is liquid or tablet.

Thank you. I looked at your list and did find 2 fairly close to me. She seems to be moving around better. She ate good at her last feeding and both of her eyes are open now.It is about time for her next feeding.I am praying that we caught it early enough. I have put your website on my favorites so I can have it handy.Thank you again. All the help is so appreciated.
