Hi...im new here....i love my squirrels sooo much

hi im jenny....i am new to this site....i am so excited to know there are so many people out there like me that just adore squirrels....it all started about 2 yrs ago when i started putting peanuts out in front of my window for them....i watched and fell in love with them....i slowly started to throw the peanuts instead and after a few months they were waiting for me in the morning on my front porch....i made a very special bond with a squirrel i named precious.....she started coming as a baby and i have seen her everyday since then....i love her so much....i know people think im crazy but i dont care...there is precious,mama,baby,cc,cutie pie, little one and so may more....i just started feeding a baby that must have just left the nest....she wont come to my hand yet but every morning when i go out back and call for them, after the commotion,she comes about 5 ft or so from me and takes the peanut and eats....i go out every morning right b4 they get up and call to them...i love hearing them rustling around in their nests and peeking their heads out at me.....by 7am they are all up and busy getting their peanuts....after work around 4 pm is when i see them all....it seems they know when i get home...anyways i have a horrible dilemma....about a week ago a saw a squirrel that seemed to have a bad balance problem.....i called a rehab close to me and she said that she would help him if i could bring him in..i sayed home for 2 days from 7am til 7pm trying to get him but i couldnt....he was getting worse....havent seen him since...i cried all night.....recently i noticed a couple other squirrels kind of doing the same thing but not as bad...what is happening??is someone poisoining them?i know that some of my neighbors are not that happy with me....i give them as many peanuts as they want in hopes that they will stay in my yard ...i have a huge back yard....am i doing something wrong??is it illegal to feed them???they are pets in my eyes and i will do anything to protect them...i live in massachusettes.....please help!!!!!!thanks so much....jenny and precious...

While others on here have a lot more knowledge than I the first problem is feeding them peanuts. Try some veggies and some fruits instead. An occasional almond would be much better for them than peanuts. Squirrels really like avocado and there are some in my yard that will eat from a spoon. However, do not give the the skin or seed from avocado as they are TOXIC. Scoop the meat of the avocado out and discard the skin and seed.

Squirrels will and need to eat other items besides nuts or peanuts, so give them a variety. Nuts are a treat for squirrels but not the only food to give them. If you are willing to order food especially for squirrels you can go online and order Henry's Healthy Blocks. Most on this site use them to feed there squirrels.
