Hammie is my 9 to 10 week old baby Northeastern red. When he fell at 2 weeks old he broke/injured his jaw. according to the vet this is why Hammies teeth do not line up they way they should. He gets them trimmed by the vet once every two weeks or so. He seems to be having some problems eating solid foods. sort of like it gets stuck in his mouth. He cant grind his teeth down like other squirrels but does nibble at monkey biscuits and blocks. He can pick things up with his teeth but seems like he cant let go sometimes. Is this normal? Does anyone else have this issue? and what can be done to make eating easier for Hammie?

You will have to treat your little Hammie like I do my Marven who is a NR squirrel due to Malocclusion (had his four front teeth removed) --and now I have to chop all his food up for him..... vegetables, fruits, wild plants and nuts. Marven basically picks up the food I have chopped for him and puts it in his mouth then moves the pieces to his back molars and chews on them to make the pieces smaller before swallowing the food.

Thank you so much for responding :) I worry so much about Hammie. He is an NR as well. He is blind in one eye and one leg is a little weaker than the other resulting from his injuries. I always worry about him choking. At 9 and 10 weeks I am not sure what he should be eating as well which doesnt help my fear any. He is on FV formula, I have monkey biscuits, block and summer squash. I havent really got a good chance to look to see if he has his back teeth. He really doesnt like when the vet tries to open his mouth to trim. Should he have them by now?
Sorry I dont mean to sound silly or anything. This is my first time raising a baby squirrel, Ive raised Starlings never squirrels lol and I just want whats best for Hammie. He is such a big part of me and my family's life. He is an amazing little baby with such a delightful personality and so much affection! He's my little miracle :Love_Icon
Photo 1 Hammie the day he was found: estimated to be 2 weeks old, fell 30 ft from his nest suffered broken jaw, broken arm, bruised ribs and abdomen, deep puncture wound behind right ear, deep puncture wound behind left leg, and right arm large skin laceration from his paw/hand to the pit of his arm where the skin was completely stripped away.

OMG, he is darling! Pick up some spring mix, snap peas, avocado, mushrooms, cucumber and sweet potato. Start with just giving him greens. After a few feedings start adding in each of these, feeding a few meals before adding the next new thing in. Keep giving him the fv and block, do them first thing in the morning and make up a dish with the other stuff later in the day. Always put block in with him for the night, as well. And he should have a water bottle on his cage, if he does not already. There are plenty of other things you can feed, but this is a good start.
